Purely off the top of my head, Peep Show, IT Crowd, The Inbetweeners UK are the big three that come to mind. There are some unsung gems that deserve some attention too like Chewing Gum which I found to be hilarious and have moments of heavy hitting drama during big moments with the characters. Bad Education is more quick wit UK humour featuring different usual archetypes in one classrooms.

The best sitcom ever is Gavin and Stacey and Outnumbered is a close second, Outnumbered is basically the British version of Modern Family. Or anything with Ricky Gervais or Stephen Merchant!

Every time British humor and US humor are compared on this channel I feel the descriptions of US humor are wrong in many ways. Yes, we have relatable humor, but there is so much sarcasm in the US. Most people I know are highly sarcastic, banter and constantly use self deprecating humor. We also watch a lot of British comedies and comedians and love them. So many of us have very dark senses of humor too.

I prefer American sitcoms over British comedy. I'm not sure, but perhaps most shows in the Netherlands are from the US and grew up with it. There are British shows, compared to US shows, Dutch networks have more more US shows and not streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Prime Video have mostly American shows. So while growing up and still is mostly it's American, so used to it and perhaps that's why liking it more.

The USA has a lot of subcultures. In my culture banter is common starting from a little kid. For example we do this thing called “your mama” jokes. We all laugh about it. So we learn as little kids to hone bantering on skills with your mama jokes. And then older when we are at gatherings with friends and family we commonly rib each other. I make fun of people and they make fun of me. It’s delightful. Actually if we don’t make fun of you then it probably means we don’t like you and or we think you’re a fuddy duddy. I think there are other kinds of comedy too. Like there’s the family comedy which I loved Fresh Prince of Bel Aire and then there’s the raunchy comedy. I like both. I used to watch Benny Hill as a kid (when my parents weren’t home) and laugh my head off. 😂

British humour is indeed very dry. American humour is quite more diverse I would say, but what I don’t like is the way some shows or movies still mock other people’s cultures. Whenever there is a Canadian, French, Latino, German etc. character, they’re almost always accompanied by clichés pertaining to their culture of origin. What the directors don’t realise is that most American shows and movies are viewed worldwide and so their audience might probably be annoyed.

The UK version of The Office is much, much darker and more dismal/depraved, but the characters are also less cartoony and more believable as real people. Compare Gareth to Dwight - literally every office in the US or UK has someone like Gareth: painfully uncool, next to zero dignity, pathetic, and sycophantic. Dwight, on the other hand, is also all of those things, but more of an abrasive asshole who goes out of his way to sow discord among his coworkers and acts as a central antagonist in the US version. Personally I find Dwight an over-the-top cliché and not believable as a person. He mellows out a bit in later seasons but still leaves me overall unconvinced.
