Nazi German army treated Brits and the French like porcelain dolls in comparison to Slavs, not to mention the Roma, Sinti and Jews, and you had it WAY easier than people east from Odra river. Even if a British or French citizen was captured for one reason or another and made slave labor, they were posted at work much lighter and treated far less bad than Slavic laborers. The latter were treated worse than animals. The sad thing about this difference in treatment of the mentioned ethnicities, even though they are all Caucasian, is much older than WWII and prevails in the mindset of many Western nations until this day. Still, maybe even more sadly, it is being widely overlooked by the poorer-educated non-Caucasian Westerners, which leads some of them to ascribe so called "White Privilege" to nations within Caucasian type, which had been victimized and subjected to White-On-White colonialism multiple times in their past, and some of which suffer it even presently (like i.e. Ukraine and Ukrainians).

Very well done, thank you! There are so many documentaries spreading false information about the occupation. I was born in Guernsey after the occupation but knew many who experienced it and have since obviously been interested. From 1968 for a few years I even lived in a historic house called "The Maytrees" in Hauteville, which used to be one of their headquarters (as abandoned by the commander of the Royal Navy, I believe).

I'm kinda sad that this video just kinda glossed over Sark. Much of what you said was true on Sark, but much of it was also not. Sibyl Hathaway's indomitable spirit, killing the Nazis with kindness, kept her people safe. She had friends in high German places. They didn't dare touch her people. And, because Sark had so few evacuees compared to the other Channel Islands, things remained more-or-less in control there, as opposed to, say, Alderney. There was a dialect of Norman spoken on Alderney, Auregnais. It's now extinct, and a big reason, though not the only reason, is the war. Alderney was filled with historical buildings, many of which were destroyed by the Nazis to build their fortifications. This led to the residents of Alderney having no real home to return to, much like many people on the continent. And that resulted in a tremendous cultural shift, in which Auregnais died out and Alderney became something different. This did not happen on Sark, because of Dame Sibyl and her people. The Sark dialect of Norman is alive and well. Their cultures and traditions survived. They're still here. I highly, highly recommend reading whatever you can on her and Sark during the war specifically; it remains a fascinating story.

A distant cousin of mine was born on Jersey during the occupation and was named Winston out of spite for the Germans

11:56 - they weren't imported from the general area of mainland Europe, because that would be Portugal, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy etc. etc. They were imported from EASTERN Europe, because that's where the laborers for the hardest and most damaging type of work had been brought. And if there had been some western Europeans among them, they were surely performing lighter tasks. No quarry work or anything of that sort.

Who evacuated the 25000 prople from the island? (dumb question) My initial thought was the governemnt, but then i thought maybe people were taking advantage of the situation and making other people pay for passage by ship. And what about the 66000 people who stayed? Did they not think they would be occupied, or were they very laissez about it "Oh we'll have 'em ovah for some tea, itll be a jolly good time" (sorry for shitty joke😅 but both are serious questions) Edit: i understand. Standing with their leader. I dont blame her for what she did. She was doing what she thought was right for her people. She was also a pimp for the hand kissing thing.
