I can tell you about the tyre tracks you saw on the road. It's cuite common in rural areas such as where you found them. 18-21 year olds who`s just got their drivers license will often buy an old and beaten up Volvo 240 and weld the rear differential so they can do burnouts. They'll do this usualy on the weekends, typicaly friday and saturday night, but they end their session around midnight. Everyone know eachother in those places, and the kids doing the burnouts usualy know the people living along the road, and vice versa. It's not frowned uppon, but not encurraged either. It's considered something usual, although the police discurrages people from doing it, and will give you points on your license if you're caught. The tracks themselves will dissappear within a few weeks.

I thought it was quad bikes. Thanks for the information. If the locals are not bothered then it’s not so bad. In the UK residents would be very unhappy. 😁👍

@@LifeistooshortCK I found a short video of someone doing a burnout and some drifting. As you can see, it's not the safest activity. Heres the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mt8ni2OUmE0.html&ab_channel=Stenbakis

@@LifeistooshortCK We even have a name for them. Rånere (noun), and råne (verb). Not all "rånere" do burnouts... When I was a child they would drive back and forth 20m from our front door, can not remember it bothered me at all. There is now a "No motor vehicle allowed" after midnight sign to break up their route back and forth...

The fact that locals are not bothered by it is surprising to me. Obviously in my previous line of work I would get lots of complaints about boy racers 😁👍

@@LifeistooshortCK And just after I wrote my comment, you drove part of the route I was talking about (Mandal at 9:26). The route takes a right after 9:50, where the loop is blocked at night by a sign. They have also blocked driving to Piren (10:00) at night for the same reason.

You're wife is right. Local kids meet some where on a country road and show off their cars, among other things how long can they produce smoke from their tyers. The kids that do this kind of things are called "Rånere".

The requirement to build shelters in all new buildings over 1000 sqm was done away with in 1998. You still have to apply for an exemption, but all applications have been approved as a matter of policy since 1998. The owners of the shelters that exist are required to maintain them and keep them in working order, but there is very little funding for inspections, so how good of a job the owners do varies greatly. Noone (with the exception of a few Civil Defence employees) has really paid any attention to these things for decades, at least not politically, but that has of course changed lately.
@LifeistooshortCK
@LifeistooshortCK Год назад
I didn’t know this so thanks for the explanation. I imagine the Russian invasion has caused a lot of dust to be disturbed on some very old plans 😁👍
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 Год назад
About speed limits: Inside building areas (cities, towns, village, etc.), default limit is 50 km/h Outside these areas default limit is 80 km/h. Gray speed limit sign with diagonal lines = cancel current limit, and apply default limit (usually that is 80 km/h) (Personally I think they should have one default at 80 to avoid possible confusion,) Speed limit sign is valid until cancelled by a different limit or cancel sign or at an intersection. If there is no speed limit sign after an intersection, it is probably default to 80. (Unless obviously very urban, then it might be 50) Square sign with speed limit in center, and text "Sone". = Speed limit zone, e.g. not cancelled unless same gray sign with diagonal lines. "Sone" signs are used for parking regulations too, to make them apply for all roads inside the zone.

Good information. Very helpful to visitors ❤️
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766
@thorbjrnhellehaven5766 Год назад
@@LifeistooshortCK Some people actually have been able to get away from speeding ticket because of missing signs. "You did 78 where the limit is 50, we have to revoke your drivers license." "Actually, there were no 50-sign after the last intersection, that means the legal limit is 80, and I was 2 bellow, can I please have my license back?"
@kristoffer3000
@kristoffer3000 Год назад
To expand a little on this; Norway has speed limits and speed zones, limits are 50 and 80 which is why when a speed zone is cancelled the speed goes up to the nearest speed limit, so for example a 40 zone goes to a 50 limit and a 60 goes to an 80 limit. Zones obviously take priority over limits and they can also go over the 80 limit but that's largely reserved for motorways. There's also no change in speed unless you see a speed sign of some description. It's quite a good system when you know how it works, I also think I made it sound way more complicated than it actually is haha

Outside the big cities like Oslo and Bergen, we don't need locks here. Basically most Norwegians are wealthy enough to not have to go out and steal at night.You'll see a lot of shops leaving goods outside as well during the night. I moved here 2 years ago, and compared to where I came from (Netherlands), it was a shock in the beginning.

Mandal is a summer city, so it's very quiet the rest of the year. The tunnel in the city center is the entrance to underground parkingspace. When driving from the railway to Mandal you didn't drive the main road, that's one of the funny things with google and other NAV systems when used in Norway, you might end up on a really narrow road.

They were driving past Sandnes when they switched drivers, that is the fastest route to Mandal. The new road, running in parallel the last 5-10km opened Desember 2021, so the GPS nav may not be updated. It's faster, but if you are on vacation, the road they drove is the best one.

You commented on the missing speed limit signs, but that is due to the national speed limit of 80 km/h or 50mph. If there is no sign, it is always 80km/h. (Unless in a rural area, then it is 50 km/h or 30mph.) That way there is a lot less signs you have to maintain. If there is a posted speed limit, there has to be a sign every 300 (?) meter or so. And most of the roads in Norway are in the middle of nowhere with little traffic. There was a big sign at the ferry port when you drove thru customs showing you the national speed limit.

@@LifeistooshortCK Hola It's raining here today and it's 45 degrees at night it can freeze, it was 18 degrees the other night and Im at elevation 5,000 something 30 miles away in Silver City it's 6,230 ft elevation I'm next to the Gila national forest at 9,000 to10,000 plus in elevation and there is snow up there. It's our winter. My father's parents both spoke Norwegian and there parents came from Norway. Have a wonderful day.🙂 oh, note I grew up in Wisconsin...there is a saying " all roads lead to Stoughton" a town where a lot of Norwegians migrated to. My grandparents lived more southwest by Monroe. My father was a Berget and my Grandma was a Engebretson. Her brother was Frank Engebretson famous for his barn murals.

The "Christian retreat" you passed while on the train is called Paulen Farm, its owned by Vennesla's scout group. They hosted a regional camp with scouts from all over Agder there a few years back.

No bunkers under every house here either. But, during the cold war, every municipality had a plan for shelters for their people. With Putin on the prowl earlier this year, however, many politicians scrambled to clear out said shelters for stuff they had filled them up with...

Many people in Ukraine survived the bombardment because they had cellars. Very few properties have them in the UK. 👍. Worth keeping them ready these days.

You can find less visible "snøfangere" than those. Just visit some old churches in Norway with slate or clay roof tiles and you can see the alternative.

If you haven’t seen a speed limit sign, the limit is 50 km/h in “densely populated areas” and 80 outside of them. On some older roads outside of “densely populated areas” you might think 80 is too liberal, but that is just because a serious crash haven’t happened yet 😂 They like to lower the limits after incidents rather than before.

We do the same in the UK. There is currently a debate about the removal of the hard shoulder on our so called ‘smart motorways’. People are being killed and injured and the roll out has now been suspended.

Looks like a nice trip but it hurts to see people using tortillas to make wraps for lunch in Norway instead of lompe/lefse. Please try them if you can, they're much better and every grocery store sells them. They go great with meat and cheese or gudbrandsdalost (brown "cheese", but more like caramelized cream) and jam.

Has no one told you about the right to roam? "Allemannsretten". You can park you van in the forest if no one can see you. Make sure you're not in the way of someone or can see a house. I think the law says 150 meters from a house. Clean up after your self and don't be a nuisance to anybody. You seam to be careful people, so just be nice and you will be fine. Don't park on someone farm or garden, forests are better. Fine some remote tiny road.

Hari OM ...closing for winter when autumn had barely begun? I guess it's a volunteer staff like so many historic railways in the world; and thank goodness for them, I say! It is common that tourist attractions close in end of August. Just beacuse the vacation time is over, so there are few visitors. Sometimes some places open in «høstferie»/«atumn break» in end of september, start of october. And in december for chrismas.
