I was getting into an elevator with two defensive players for the Philadelphia Eagles, and i was literally stunned at how huge they were. They were also very gentlemanly and seemed like really nice guys. Someone else suggested the video of the NFLs freaks of nature and i do, too. Now, they are in an entirely different size class.

I had the same experience just seeing a bunch of college linemen at a practice. We're accustomed to seeing tall people OR big people. Seeing big AND tall guys who are muscular rather than fat (at least 6-foot-four and 300 pounds) gets your attention.

As a guy who ran special teams in college the whole philosophy is kill or be killed and sometimes you are delivering punishment and sometimes you are absorbing devastating hits. So many concussions and injuries to even count. Now in my 50s I feel all of it every day but wouldn't trade the experience.

It takes a certain type of person to play football, especially professional. Not only do you have to be as elite of an athlete as there is in the world, you have to be 100% fearless and as coaches and players say, willing to stick your face in the fan meaning willing to harm yourself to make a play. There are more injuries in football than any other sport. Average NFL career is just over 3 years mostly due to injuries, especially knees. They are well compensated but most have physical issues the rest of their lives. In person the speed it all happens is insane. The sounds of helmets and pads colliding is incredible. Most humans flat out wouldn't make it through 1 game. When players get hurt at practice the coaches literally move the ball away from the man on the ground and continue practice. It's an incredibly cold business too. They will cut guys so fast that teammates don't even get to say goodbye, they just don't see him anymore. It is, in my opinion, the greatest sport on earth!

American football is started at a young age, just like baseball, basketball and rodeo. Kids grow up tough and it makes them prepared for military service. If you ever wondered why the French have the saying, "When the fighting starts, pray you have an American soldier with your unit." The aggressive warlike nature stems from our early exposure to dangerous sports and our diets. Many of the football players are massive men. I would guess that the lightest player would be around 220 pounds of pure muscle, but a lot of them are 260 to 280 pounds. I'm a big man myself, (6'1" at 260 pounds) but when I'm out walking the track around the football field and the team is out running scrimmages, I feel small around them. So, these hits they give and take are seriously hard and dangerous. I had a friend who played and he said the only reason he played was to injure people.

The slams depend on what year it happened. They're mostly illegal now, and will get a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty, but not always. You can't pick a guy up and slam him into the ground anymore, but that wasn't always the case. However, if a runner tries to hurdle then it's a little bit different story. If y'all liked the video, the same guy did one with the best hurdles in American football and shows a little bit more of the graceful side of football. Might be interesting to see your reaction to that, the runners avoiding the big hits.

@jasonbrown097
@jasonbrown097 Месяц назад
Bruh the pads are made of a small amount of shock absorbing foam covered in plastic, combined thats maybe a few inches thick at best. That ain’t gonna do much do absorb the blow. It certainly helps a little but you still feel the majority of that force
@rg20322
@rg20322 Месяц назад
@@jasonbrown097 Totally agree and played in the early 80's. The shoulder pads and helmet are basically all you have with some slight foam for the waist and knees, which pretty much do nothing. Getting hit at speed hurts and you feel it 2 days later.
@plaid11
@plaid11 Месяц назад
Those pads really only help with certain shoulder/collar injuries and help when you land on the ground. They don’t help much and do nothing to help from getting a concussion. They’re trying to get helmets to help with that but without having the helmet break after every hit, they just won’t stop concussion on these kind of hits. They just make sure you don’t get you skull fractured as badly as it could

Helmet to Helmet is illegal now. You can be tossed from a game if it's determined it was on purpose. Through instant replay they can tell if it was on purpose or incidental which is still a personal foul of 15 yards and a first down.

Just keep in mind the AVERAGE player height and weight is 6'2 245 lbs (188 cm and 112 kg) and the AVERAGE 40 yard dash time is 4.48 seconds, so the newtons of force applied by a single average player is 1740.48N, experiencing nearly the same G force astronauts experience during a space shuttle flight per 2 player large collisions. Football isn't a contact sport. It's a collision sport. Also, coming from someone who played football from Pop warner to D1 and the in the CFL, so from age 5 to age 28. Yeah, some of those hits hurt, but for most of them, you bounce up because of adrenaline and dont really feel them until later.

When a tackle is being made, they want to stop the ball carrier AND try to knock the ball loose. That's why tackling can be so violent. A blindside block is when a player doesn't see it coming. As long as the blocker is in front of the other player, and doesn't hit him below the waist, or in the head and neck area, it is a legal block.

If you didn't see a yellow flag thrown by the officials the hit was probably legal at the time it occured. There used to be deaths in football, but in the early 1900s they made some rule changes to make the game less dangerous. 3:13 is illegal. You can't hit a defenseless player in the head and neck, 15 yard penalty in the NFL. In College Football it's called Targeting, and carries both a 15 yard penalty and a mandatory ejection. All targeting penalties must be confirmed by replay. QBs get extra protection when they're in the pocket. It's illegal to hit a QB in the head, neck, or knees when he's in the pocket. It's also illegal to bring your full weight down on a QB. It's called Roughing the Passer which is a 15 yard penalty and automatic first down. The QB that got yanked down by his head or neck, I can't tell which for sure, would be roughing the passer today. Players with concussions can be removed from the game. Some players try to hide concussions. The guys that were returning kicks could have avoided being hit. They can wave their hand above their head, which is calling for a fair catch. What happens then, is that the ball is dead as soon as the return man catches it, and the kick coverage team is not allowed to hit him. In High School and NFL football you can take a free kick following a fair catch, but you cannot do that in College Football. Fair catch kicks are very rare.

Injuries? My team the Titans set a NFL record a couple years back for players used in a season due to injuries. NFL rosters are 53 with 46 allowed to suit up for each game. There are 17 games in the regular season for reference. We played 91 diffeent players that year mostly due to injuries. So 39 guys who were not on the team at the start of the season. Another way to look at it is games missed due to injury. We also led in that category with 339. At 339 games missed and 46 allowed to play each game that almost 7 and half games we would have had no players if they all happened at once and we couldn't add new players lol. Everyone is some level of hurt by the end of the season. It's just a matter of what you can play through.

Leading with Helmet is Illegal (Neck Injury and or Concussion, Helmet to Helmet Contact (Concussions) is Illegal. Face-Mask (Grabbing and holding onto the front of the helmet connected to severe neck and spine injuries) is Illegal. American Football tackle with full gear on running at top speed is the equivalent of being hit by a car going at least 25 mph. Without all the extra weight and gear on, Football players run much faster and hit much harder. Rugby is the closest thing to American Football that can rival speed and power used in a game. I used to play in high school, I've lost my helmet, my mouthguard and even one of my cleats to a well placed hit. My best friend and neighbor at the time, we played for two different schools and he actually broke 3 of my ribs during a game. It's an absolute blast and head rush to play. My friends and I and some of our team mates get together every weekend for a pick-up game at our old high schools. We're all in our 30's now but we still play Full-Contact without any gear on and just enjoy playing.
