Kicking dirt comes from the home plate umpire having the job of keeping home plate clean with a little brush. So managers kick dirt on the plate to make him have to clean it
Also, the implication is that the plate may as well be covered with dirt, because the umpire is so blind, an uncovered plate wouldn't help him correctly call balls and strikes anyway.
If you get in the stadium while the teams are practicing, you will likely see managers and coaches hitting ground balls to infielders and hitting fly balls to the outfielders. They would look funny doing those things in a suit.
Exactly! And not just looking funny… it wouldn’t be practical from a comfort and mobility standpoint either. Although I suppose you could still argue that they could just wear sweats, and don’t necessarily have to dress in the same uniform as the players.
Managers being called "captains" is why they're sometimes called "skipper", too. As a kid in the 1970s, you used to hear "and the Braves' skipper, Bobby Cox, comes running out of the dugout to argue the call" (in addition to coaching the Braves from 1978-1981, then again from 1990--2010, Cox was the most ejected manager in MLB history, being kicked out of 162 games! - that's an entire season!)
Players and managers (and even fans) use to actually fight the umpires back in the OLD OLD days of baseball. MLB eventually took umpire saftey into account and banned physical contact with the umps. So they kick dirt, but kicking dirt in general started with players and coaches kicking dirt on the home plate. That forcesthe umps to bend over and wipe it off per their duties. They probably said things like "bend ur big butt down there and do some work" or something to the effect😅
In Basketball, the Point Guard is the most important position, they're the ones who run the offense on court, but there's still no "captain" in basketball.
Have you seen the MLB London Series promo that just came out? It’s with Rob McElhenney & Wrexham. It’s funny. Also, the headline of this video is hysterical! It’s the only sport I can think of that does this! 😂
Baseball is very much a team game where individual talent matters, but no one player can normally carry the load by themselves. You have star players, amazing hitters/pitchers/fielders, but one player alone normally doesn't influence a game or the entire season the way an NFL quarterback does. So, it is rather strange if there was a "captain" in the same way they normally work in other sports. I do believe teams have "captains" (normally star pitchers or hitters), but it's just not the same as it is in other sports. The manager generally is running the game, setting the lineup, and even calling the shots about specific strategies in given situations. They are very much an extension or part of their team, often being former players who will run drills with players and can give advice based on their own experience/career (including hitting ground balls or popups to them), so it makes sense they dress the part and still think of themselves as players, just players fulfilling a different role. In terms of the actual game, when a team is playing defense, the Catcher is sort of a field general (often setting the strategy for the defense and calling the pitches that the pitcher will throw based on this strategy). The Catcher is frequently looking into the dugout and getting signs from the coaching staff about these types of things, but often will be running the defense on their own (and the defensive players themselves all have their own jobs/etc.). This is why many MLB managers are former catchers. They are already extremely familiar with the intricacies of the game and how running a game works. Since managers are kind of like another player too, this is a big part to why they go out and argue with umpires and get thrown out of games. Sometimes, a star player starts to argue with an umpire, and to "protect" that player, the manager will go out instead and get in the ump's face in place of the player. That way, the player's frustrations are expressed, but only the manager gets thrown out of the game. Also, managers will sometimes get themselves thrown out of a game just to fire up their team if they feel their team is getting complacent/etc. It's also a way some managers will show team management that they are passionate and doing everything they can to win (if a team is under-performing). Sometimes they are just frustrated and freak out though.
Connie Mack, on of the suit wearers, of the then Philadelphia Athletics (now Oakland/Sacramento/Las Vegas Athletics): hired 1901, retired 1950. 3731 wins, 3948 losses...all records that will never be broken. He built 2 dynasties and won the World Series 5 times and then sold off the players of both teams to make money. He then figured out that the best way to make money was to finish in 4th place (out of 8 AL teams at the time). They were good enough to get butts in the seats, but not too expensive, so they would never win. After he retired, the A's and the Phillies had a race as to which could be the more garbagy Philadelphia club. The Phillies won that contest: The garbage A's went to Kansas City and the Phillies stayed garbage in Philadelphia.
A lot of times when they kick dirt they're yelling at the umpire for being blind, and since they can't see the plate they might as well cover it up with dirt. It's just a way to try and disrespect the ump for being bad at their job.
If you enjoy manager ejections, look at the late Earl Weaver, the late Billy Martin, the late Tommy Lasorda, the late Sparky Anderson, Bobby Cox, and Lou Piniella. Before instant replay was adopted, baseball was more entertaining because of the arguing and fighting over disputed calls.😅😅😅
This MLB series is fantastic! I know you’ve watched a video on different pitches, but the MLB “quick Question, What pitch is that?” Is really very good. It’s the same narrator. I think you’d love it!
THEY ARE ARE ON THE TEAM, SO TOO THEIR COACHES ..... mostly all do it on teams ..... only a couple (way back in the day) ever both played and managed ..... just a tradition now.
Most team sports have team captains. What their role is depends on the sport, it's traditions, and sometimes the rules. In ice hockey, for example, only the captain or the assistant captain can discuss a call or non-call with the referees on the ice. In football, the captains serve the same role and in the old days they were the ones who decided whether or not to accept or decline a penalty In the early days of baseball the captain\manager was also a player and wore a uniform and the practice took hold. Most Little League managers and coaches do not wear uniforms. Those that do are taking themselves way too seriously.
Great reaction guys. Managers and players cannot touch umpires, so they get as close to them as possible. That’s why they turn their caps around or throw their hats on the ground. They kick dirt because it’s an insult, and it’s the umpire’s job to brush the dirt off of home plate.
You see coaches kicking dirt a lot around home plate because the umpire has to keep the plate clean so they can see what is a ball or a strike. So they kick dirt all over the plate so the ump has to pull out his little brush and clean home plate. But some just kick dirt at them every time now. It is hilarious to see
Managers (and sometimes players) kick dirt at umpires because they can't touch them, so kick dirt is as close as they can get without actually hitting them.
