Steven saying Josh is Chinese and him saying "I'm not sure if I can claim to be Chinese" is so wholesome. It made my day so much better somehow.
@Bluey306
@Bluey306 2 года назад
it's the fact that Steven is acknowledging Josh's Chinese heritage - which is sweet in its own way since plenty of mixed people get invalidated - and Josh recognizing that he may not have the same claim to the ethnicity as Steven and/or other mixed-Chinese people do. it's just a lovely, low-key kind of respect from both ends.

The cafe name "Bopomofo" or "ㄅㄆㄇㄈ" (traditional chinese) as seen on the logo is actually the first 4 character sounds in chinese, similar to ABCD or Ganadara in Korean, a lot of yall prolly know this already but in case you didn't lol
@fangjiunnewe3634
@fangjiunnewe3634 2 года назад
Those 4 symbols are not traditional Chinese they're 注音符号 (zhu yin fu hao) which are a pre Pinyin system of sound depiction for Mandarin, and though more internally consistent than Pinyin suffer from lack of compatibility with Roman letters and so was supplanted by Pinyin. These 4 are indeed the first four and the whole set is oftentimes called bopomofo the same way alphabet is the first two letters Alpha and Beta, or alifbeh for the Arabic script.
@LEGO-fu2tc

I think Steven hit the nail on the head when he said, “I had a place in the world at a boba shop.” The “boba lifestyle” is a well-established part of the Asian-American experience and identity, but I’ve never heard someone articulate it as well as he did. It's really cool to see Bopomofo being a part of that, and I'm so glad you guys were able to experience this while you were in LA. Being of part Chinese descendent of Malaysia, Many of the dishes and drinks in this shop hits home 1. Boba has been a thing for decades. 2. Mapo Tofu is very common dish 3. Black Sesame dessert is really a thing (even after a heavy proper meal / banquet) Now after Covid... I wish all those shops are still open.... (especially the dessert shop that is in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and also those stalls that were a huge line in Ipoh - 2 places for these kind of desserts in Malaysia that usually is swamp with people late night) Thank you Josh, Ollie and Steven for making this segment!

Back when I was in college(2010-2015) I used to watch a lot of Wong Fu Productions videos, like as soon as a new one came out I would watch it. Not sure why I stopped watching them, but it is sooo good to see Phil again! I am glad to see he is doing well.

I'd recommend Jolly to try the famous Porto's Bakery in L.A. Went there in 2019 for breakfast and was a great experience! Just ask any local residents 😋

Alright Jolly, you need to have a sign up for a touring food trip, where we fly with you, especially to Korea, that we may taste all these foods that make our mouths water! ❤ from Florida.

I am glad that you guys enjoyed the drinks and dishes at Bopomofo. I already went to the one in San Gabriel, and that experience was amazing. The dishes and drinks were freaking delicious and worth the wait. I got to meet Phil Wang of Wong Productions during Black Friday 2021 when I did not expect him to work during that day. I will definitely go to the Artesia location since it is closer to where my dad lives and try more dishes and drinks that I haven't tried yet when I am in OC. It is great to see you guys and Steven Lim together again ever since the ChoSun Galbi Korean BBQ video.

I first tried corn milk in Thailand and I'm all about that flavour. I really want to try that strawberry corn milk drink! I squealed when Phil came on screen, I remember watching lots of their videos years ago. The vegan chicken popcorn reminds me of Singapore's inexpensive vegetarian hawker food and also the food place called Greendot in Singapore. They have soy nuggets that taste meat like! For anyone travelling to Singapore and looking for vegan food in a more restaurant setting but with a low price point, do look out for a Greendot restaurant. It's affordable and so so yummy! They have the classic laksa too which I dare say is just a good as the non vegan version.

This is my neighborhood and I have been wanting to try this place! I didn’t know the Wong Fu guy opened it! Now I must try it!! And a little correction, this isn’t exactly OC (you are still in LA county), but the Artesia/Cerritos area is at the border right next to OC. The Asian American food scene has been growing in this area in recent years, definitely much better than 20+ years ago!

I've been a pretty avid boba drinker since before it became incredibly popular so I'm use to see all the drinks like these in the video but it's always fun to watch other people experience the uniqueness in some of these drinks.
