Rail action on the Geelong to Ballarat line on 19 January 2004. Included are the usual grain trains for that time of year, along with diverted 9230 and 9441 freights due to the regional fast rail work that was being undertaken on the Geelong line at the time.
Interestingly, several V/Line N classes were on hire to Freight Australia for the duration of the RFR works, as demonstrated by N474 leading Steamrail's T356 on 9441 empty log train.
SRHC's T320 also makes an appearance on 9123 down grain.

Thank you. Why not make the rolling stock wider? The ride should be better! My great uncle, a steam locomotive engineer on the NYC (New York Central) railroad, said it was unfortunate that our gauge was not 6 feet. His huge 4-8-4 locomotive was as big as it could get, restricted by the gauge.

The gauge is 5ft 3in, which is only 6.5 inches wider than standard gauge. There's no difference in the size of the rolling stock or the ride.

Nice. Any idea how long the typical Freight Australia grain train would be? (How many wagons?) thanks.

Anywhere from 20 to 40 wagons is common on grain trains. Interstate freights can be 1500m or 1800m long, depending on limitations such as the length of crossing loops
