Broadmoor siren--REMOVED & EXAMINED!! From roof of Shopping Centre 

Wow, that Premiere chat ended INSTANTLY after the video! I have some fond memories of this particular siren! I used to work in the Sainsburys inside the centre, and had this odd habit of always taking my cigarette breaks on that level of the car-park at about 09:55. Always ended up getting the full blast of the siren test, and did wonder if it was located somewhere on the car park! 🙃 Many thanks for confirming my suspicions at long last! 😀 (Even if I had mistakenly thought it was at the top of the exit spiral diagonally SE of the lift tower! 😇)

It was 1982. My parents were looking to move our family from Byfleet in Surrey, to a new house within driving distance of the Blackwater trading estate, where my dad had just got a new job. We went to look at a house on the Owlsmoor housing estate. I was not quite 12 at the time. Everything was fine until we were being shown the back garden. My dad asked what the big building on the nearby hill was. (Uh-oh! ) It was a Monday, and it was 9:59am. 60 seconds later.... I had never heard anything like this in my life before. As the sirens started up, I jumped up with my hands over my ears and screamed. I landed on the ground in a ball on my left side hyperventilating. ( I also spontaneously emptied both my bowel and bladder, I was so scared!) That was 40 years ago. We ended up moving to Frimley instead. Every time I heard the siren after that, I used to start to feel anxious. Sometimes, I still have nightmares about that day, even now! In 2020, I discovered that not only was I born with ADHHD, but I'm also autistic.(That explains my initial reaction.) For me, it's such a relief to not hear that siren anywhere outside RU-vid any more.

I remember this one. It was probably my favourite siren of them all because the very unusual placement.

Wow! So many memories of when I lived in College Ride, Bagshot, adjacent to Swinley Forest. Hearing the siren tested regularly and sometimes for real when subsequently Vicarage Road was cordoned off and there was a lot of activity outside our house.

Nice. I was wondering when these were going to get removed. I recently acquired a siren of my own. It's nothing like this though. It's a horn system. I have a video of it on my channel.

Such a shame. I’m going through a similar issue. The siren system for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) here in California in the US, is removing their sirens since the plant is decommissioned, and the cities decided they didn’t want to keep them for other emergencies like tsunamis, since the plant and the cities with the sirens are close to the ocean. What also sucks is their siren system was the first siren system I’ve ever seen, since we have a timeshare condo in one of the cities down there with sirens, and is the one that got me into sirens. So it’s hard to see them go, as they are the sirens I first saw, and got me into them. And I can remember first seeing them when I was young and had a memory around 16 years ago. I’d see them when we’re driving down to our timeshare, and still do, but now it will be no more 😭 Also RIP Broadmoor CS8s. Greetings from the US!

I still think the old alarm system was better so that all could hear it whether your phone, radio or whatever was on or off! Today it's a joke how long it takes to hear of the latest emergency!

As immensley interesting as it is, i cant imagine this video is doing any favour for those brave lads doing the removal, HSE would have a field day with the methods shown. Would love to see the risk assessment and method statement though!

We have similar sirens over in jersey (channel islands), they are everywhere but never tested and seemingly abandoned. I think they were cold war era but I can't find any info in them

Nice close up examination of the siren and junction box ! Also, the Klaxon CS8 placed vertically like that is basically a Federal Signal 3T22 without its horns and cap, as both sirens have a rotor of 12 and another of 10 ports, and have solenoids to control the shutters or dampers to do the hi-lo signal, the only thing is that the hi-lo on the 3T22 is faster.

I wonder how they got it on the roof in the first place. Probably with a crane.

Jersey (Channel Islands) have a load of the old Carter sirens like that. They are still technically in service, but very rarely tested and never to a schedule (except for one down at the fuel farm).

hey matt, the CS8 doesn't weigh 80kg, from the documentation I received from Klaxon says the CS8 weighs 122kg, each shutter weighs 19kg and 84kg for the main siren body. a GP8 weighs 84kg and with two shutters weighing 19kg each. comes to 122kg, thought you'd like to know

I remember on my days off getting woken up by it and at a club when I was 7 it went off at 12 but it’s was because of a fault but we still had a police officer at the club to keep us safe

Do y'all know what will happen to this unit? Scrapped or kept for parts for the Carstairs (unlikely and besides, I'm not sure if it's the correct spelling for "Carstairs")?

Are they selling these on? I'd be tempted to buy one. From what I've heard the Castle Castings sirens are 75KG so with the dampers 80KG sounds about right.

I grew up in oak ridge, tn. It’s where they enriched the uranium for the atomic bombs used in wwII. The Y-12 National Security Center is still there. They refurbish nuclear warheads for missiles. They have sirens they test every month.

you should had asked how much is it? if there getting rid of it they may give it for free! i got the huge peanutbutter cup that holds a giant crystal ball fountain from the shorthills mall. the mall kept the ball now i got the giant peanutbutter cup. i turned it upside down and put it in my garden so it looks like a peanutbutter cup. i had to borrow my bosses hydraulic portable crane to get it in my bosses van to get it to my house. the mall were doing some renoventions while i was there so i asked how much is the giant peanutbutter cup. they said take it if you could lift it. i said ill be back. sure enough i was back with the little crane and got it home. the workers even asked what im gonna do with it. i said its a huge pot for the garden. it was very heavy! over the years i have it i think i wanna make it a fountain now.
