@@wp8218 especially when it’s former players. The network dudes always have some subtle shade for former players (who are mostly black) turned analysts and their takes. Like motherfucker they played this shit in the NFL 15 years, you been doing the same shit since high school….. watching.
@@tanneredge9774 ironically enough. The black guy was advocating for the white player that may get overlooked at that position because he's white. But in this case Steve was not wrong. But race is a factor and we all know it
Well anyone who was paying attention saw how good Cooper Kupp was, he absolutely destroyed every FBS defense he faces, but like Steve said in this video he was on a certain team so they discredit. If Cooper Kupp played for Alabama if would’ve been top 10 pick.
Zack was a gamer at BYU. I don’t think he was built to carry a team though. At least not early. You can win with him, but I don’t think you win because of him just yet. Somebody mentioned that the Rams would be a good spot for him and I’m hoping that happens if he doesn’t stay behind Rogers.
@@martinwalker2501I think he can be a solid QB if he leaves the Jets. He hardly has any weapons or a good O line. He's shown before that he can clutch
I don't think it's a solid rant. The vast majority of top players in the league are scouted by the same scouters with the same evaluations and mindset. Saying that they're lazy because they can be wrong about certain players is silly. If they were right all the time, they would be paid hundreds of millions of dollars. Evaluating talent is the hardest thing to do in sports.
The NFL should give Steve Smith his own show on NFL Network where he just rants about whatever grinds his gears within the league. I’d watch the hell out of that. He just gets it.
Well the NFL owners own the NFL network so I dont think that will happen. He'd make a great ESPN radio personality though lol lord knows they need someone decent.
@@goodguygav4522 I’m sure if someone were to pitch it they could frame it as controlled opposition. He could be the loudest voice for change that the NFL would ‘listen’ to, to give fans (who don’t care to peer behind the curtain) the illusion of progress.
Man, you hit that right on the head! So many kids aren’t even looked at just because they didn’t attend a D1 college or associated with certain organizations that can run circles around some of their D1 picks. Purdy is representative of those kids whose dreams are cut short and talents are never discovered or fulfilled because they didn’t fit their stupid criteria. Mr Irrelevant Brock Purdy is going to the Super Bowl!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
It wasn't that hard. E Washington was a solid football school and his college numbers were just batshit insane, even to this day. Thats the only case id consider a d2 player tho
Scouts are terrified to bet their careers on kids that don’t look the part. You think Tom Brady would have ended that mindset by now. I understand the fear of taking a risk and losing your job by vouching for someone that isn’t a “safe” bet. But NFL scouts are also taking risk on guys with physical talent knowing they can’t read a defense and hoping they can be coached into a great player. I think they should also keep this mindset with players that arent super physically gifted. Being smart is the strongest weapon in sports. I want scouts to take the same risk on smaller guys and hope coaching and training can develop their lower physical traits at the pro level. Same thing they do for these talented studs that just can’t mentally keep up with the game at the pro level
Their slowly coming out of that that’s why a 5”10 185 Bryce young got picked number one hopefullly he plays great so scouts stop srooling over 6”3 2020
@tomjones2056 6 ft 2 seems to be the limit for Scouts when it comes to QB's. Anyone 6ft1 or below gets marked for size(Drew Brees, Tua, Purdy, Russ Wilson) When candidates are 6 ft 2 or above size magically never gets mentioned(Rodgers, Prescott, Garapollo, Deshaun)
You know that only 1-2% of ncaaf athletes make it to the nfl at all, let alone get drafted? The fact that he was drafted is already an incredible compliment to him.
@@supremelordofawesomenessok? You’re acting like that’s something EVERYBODY has to know 😂. You just wanted to nitpick a silly ass part of the vid to make him seem discreditable… pathetic
It's not just the NFL man, recruiters do this shit at every company in every industry. People are scared to take risks and instead look for the "perfect" candidate.
That’s not what it is. They invested a lot in the first rounders (traded players or other draft spots). It’s called opportunity costs. Very hard to move on from what you’re invested in
@@TG-dj2tx You missed the whole point of what Steve Smith was saying. What Purdy has done this past season shows you that he's a first round talent, but he was overlooked during the scouting process because of his size, school he came from, and/or whatever which caused him to be the last pick in the first place. But, there are first rounders who were picked solely based on hype with little real evaluation, pretty much. Had the scouts done some thorough evaluation (like they're supposedly paid to do) there'll be a lot less surprises like Purdy.
Think of great all time QB's. Tom Brady. Peyton Manning. Joe Montana. Drew Brees. Etc. Some were small, had weak arms, were slow, etc. But ALL were *elite decision makers*. That's the key #1 skill.
I love how he speaks his mind. This guy knows what he’s talking about too. I’m sure his situation of being overlooked has given him the extra motivation to really figure out what makes players truest good. Somebody get this guy on the track for player personnel.
Front offices value the wrong things. Brock Purdy 1) took over the starting job at a Power 5 conference school midway through his (true) freshman season AND NEVER GAVE IT BACK; 2) took said school to 4 consecutive bowl games; 3) started 46 games, and set most of the school's significant QB marks - including wins, yards, touchdown passes, completions, and completion percentage. Accomplishments like these require tremendous work ethic and leadership qualities, and demonstrate one can actually play the position. But if you can't throw a ball 70 yards in the air and run a 4.5 40, you get drafted in the seventh round. Sure, we can give the 49ers kudos for taking a flyer on Purdy, but the same front office is guilty of using the 3rd overall pick on a guy that started all of 15 games at an FCS school, so I call it a wash.
Its dumb as hell. And i see why steve smith is passionate about that. Especially cause steve was a very undersized WR standing at only 5’9. But the dude was a stud, 1000 career catches and 14k career yards speak for themselves
Really? Russel Wilson was drafted in the 3rd round? Jalen Hurts, second round, Pat Mahomes 1 inch taller, high first, Kyler Murray 3 inches shorter, #1 overall. He is a slow QB, who is a bit undersized, with a below average arm and average accuracy. In college he regressed over the years… he’s lucky he was drafted.
If these scouts took their jobs seriously they would have looked at every Football player prospect and judge things based on how they play not by their race, height, speed or athleticism because 1 thing they can't judge is a persons character. Their mental fortitude, their courage, and probably the most important thing of all is a competitive spirit to work harder.
@Anth Romer Brady wasn't nearly as good in College as Brock Purdy. Also, Brady played surrounded by blue blooded Michigan talent and Brock played at literally the worst Div 1 program in College football historically.
@anthromer9585lol everyone’s favorite line “He reminds me of Brady” 😂 Everybody reminds everybody of Brady nowadays! I’m actually a Michigan Wolverines fan in college football and Brady was MEH…. He was drafted right where he was supposed to (you can blame Lloyd Carr for that).
It's like people have learned nothing from Brady and Montana and Purdy and Romo. Playing quarterback is very little to do with your physical skill set. Making good decisions under duress quickly is what separates NFL quarterbacks from guys who can't make it in the NFL not their arm strength
@@radjifmaduro3661 uh romo was a damn good QB you serious I can't stand the cowboys but for being a undrafted QB he ended being a top 10 QB during his era the fk you mean I hate the cowboys but even I can say that your a 🤡 seriously cowboys were a winning franchise during romos prime your seriously ignorant
I wouldn’t say SEC in particular but the Power 5 in general. That’s what they keep pushing but every single year without fail, someone under the radar or from a small lesser known school outshines the chosen ones every single year.
The story goes that Kyle and gm deceided on Lance. Towards the late rounds they let Brian Griese,ex-qb, talk them into drafting Purdy last. Brian should be head of qb drafts from now on 😅
@@johndoe-mn4isnot rly when it’s the #3 pick u trade up for the coach and the gm has their hand in for who they take. In the 7th round that’s all scouting department
He could do any job in football. I bet he makes more $ with his TV and podcast jigs and gets to spend time with his family. As a coach it would mean 80 hr weeks and a life much like when he was a player. He's earned the right to do whatever he wants I think.
I think it has to be a system that sets them up for success. Top picks are usually expected to raise a terrible team by themselves. It's a nearly impossible task.
Pump the brakes… Purdy has played less than half a season with a star-studded roster. He may be the next franchise QB for them… he may fade out… only time will tell. People said if Gardner Minshew was this or that in college then he would have been a first round pick after breaking out in Jacksonville all of a sudden… now he’s a good backup at best. He flamed-out after half a season (on a terrible team to be fair) and everyone realized they jumped the gun when asking: “how could the idiot scouts miss this guy?!?” Minshew is one example of many. It’s a nearly impossible job… being an NFL scout and steve smith probably wouldn’t be more than above average in the long-run.
@@AAK-ne4wv you literally brought up some s*** about Gardner Minshew I'm not sure how that's relevant to anything Brock is light years better and in a better situation to succeed. L take seriously makes no sense with how much wealth and knowledge he has "not even above average" yea you sound like the scouts he's talking about who don't know anything
Montana 3rd round, Brady 6th round. Having the will, the heart, the strength to prove yourself better than what a scouts stats say is something that can’t be measured….
Sometimes it’s the coach who busts into the draft room demanding a certain player (Pete Carroll) or the owner (Al Davis, Jerry Jones) and they have no business hitting the override button on all the work that went into a list. These things are rarely brought up in interviews
Most of these qbs at big schools are surrounded by talented people, and the skill people are always open but you need to look for processing and decision-making
Ya hence alabama QB be absolute crap for decades.. and maybe Tua breaks that mold finally .. hurts doesn’t count as far as I’m concerned with his transferring. And why I hated that the pats drafted Mac. These guys have had pro offensive lineman at the collegiate level
I also think in addition scouts fall in love with those combine numbers. Nothing wrong with having them as a guideline, but you got to look at all the other things.
Don’t act like he would’ve performed the same on this dumpster fire of a team 😐 He got put in the most perfect situation to succeed, idk how you don’t see that
It's the system and play calling, chiefs and 49ers can lose the starter and still be successful with the scheme every qb thrives in those systems Colin capernick jimmy g Brock Purdy, the chiefs made Alex Smith a true nfl starter
@@southelgin25 I agree he was put in perfect situation but a game manager he is not. He was leading the NFL in multiple categories for his 7 starts making big time throws that Jimmy G never could throw.
@@DCMorgueee It paid off, because he helped get them to that game. Tell me, if all Jalen Hurts could do was hand off the football because he was injured...do you not think that game could have gone much differently? You take away ALL HEALTHY QB's from a team, and tell me how that team is to compete, when all the opposing defense has to do is key on the run.
Flutie was good, but he came in when the league was starting to find 350 lineman who can run 4.4's in the 40. Little guy had his hands full with that. 😆
You are 100% correct. Most of these issues lie with the scouts, in fact, actually on the teams who employ these same scouts Over and over and over and over again. Look at the jets, how many times have they drafted a quarterback who utterly failed miserably.. This always goes back to their scouting and their drafting. They are just horrendous many things are. And it's a shame that no one can notice this. Because as soon as someone does, notice that there's goingna be amazing picks all over the place. And it's become so acceptable of having a first rounder not to work out. Stuff like this rarely happened before the 2000s
Steve is one of the smartest football minds ever. One of these teams need to put him on the staff, but I think they afraid of him. Cuz he gonna say what he wanna say and if u disrespect him he’ll slap the fuck outta u
I know I’m a bit late to see this and comment, but I got to watch Brock Purdy when he was in high school because he played for a rival high school of mine. All I’m gonna say about those games is that he made me eat my words and then some, since then I’ve been following his career and hoping he got a chance in this league so he can prove everyone wrong like he did then too. Dude’s got that dog in him and had it since he was in high school.
@@Empare1it's 7 months later, he has continued to improve and negate some of the "weaknesses" everyone said about him and people are still hating on him. Just adds fuel to his fire. Kid is hard working, humble, determined and in a picture perfect situation to become a great QB. Let's hope he continues to exceed expectations.
