I love how like star trek is all "nah fam, that shit didn't happen, right doctor?" and DW is just shrugging while spluttering with suppressed laughter.
@@SamyulDavis isn't it only "technically" not canon because it's a comic? As in how startrek generally relegates all non screen media to being not canon? Which isn't that how DW works too? (My head canon is everything is canon unless contradicted in which case it's an alternate universe lol)
@@NATHAN-gl9nsit’s not Non-cannon they address that things are being altered - could just be the doctor who time line converging with their fictional one
@@jackmochun6498 The 7th Doctor story is part of Big Finish's 1st "Old Doctors, New Monsters" box set & the 10/Donna story was a 4 part comic story by Doctor Who Magazine. They're both pretty alright, would recommend
Love the character of the Judoon, love the species name, love their spaceship design and their armour. Love their language. Just hate, hate, hate that they look like Rhino's. The animatronic work is incredible, but wasted on a Rhino headed man. It makes them ridiculous, and they don't feel alien at all to me because of it.
@@SamyulDavis well yes, there will be mammals, insects, birds, reptiles and many more unclassified forms all over the universe, but even if a species evolved from a "rhinoform" on another planet, it would be rare for it to look exactly like a big human man with a pointy out, Earth rhinoceros head stuck on it. The best designs draw inspiration from nature, but don't copy it. We're descended from ape-like ancestors, but we're not still covered in thick black hair, with pronounced brow ridges and elongated arms. It's just extremely lazy and cartoonish. For a successful way to do this look at the Jem'Hadar from star trek. They look like they very well might have descended from some primitive Rhino-like creature on their home planet, but they also look believable in the own right, and every time I see them I dont say "oh look at that man rhino".
@@SamyulDavis I respect your point of view and love the channel, and I won't bang on about my dislike of anthropomorphic animals in terms of realism. With all the fuss about the Judoon in this series, I was half hoping I would at least find out that the Shadow Proclamation had taken genetic material from Rhinos on earth (because of their thick hides and strength etc) and bred a sentient goon race out of them. That's the only believable head-canon I can just about live with.
If the Judoon are banned from Earth, who on Earth is providing them with an endless supply of plain black 'New Rocks' boots?!?!? OR perhaps I should be asking "Who in the BBC prop dept keeps forgetting to take the metal logo off the boots whenever the Judoon appear on stage?"
The Judoon as their initial concept feel like a re-tooling of the Sontarans that they keep using because they kinda couldn't figure out how to make the Sontarans feel legitimately threatening given their potato head designs, and just gave up and turned them into full on comic relief.
That's the thing though, they didn't even try to make the Sontarans a threat. They gave it a half attempt with that Tennant two-parter and almost hit the nail on the head on how to use them, but then instantly gave up. The Sontarans don't look that threatening so it should be their actions which scare us. Have the Sontarans be the villains in stories where it seems like the Doctor truly can't win. Let them maybe, I dunno, kill a companion or something. The only reason that two parter didn't work was because there were too many cheesy/comical moments in it to take the threat seriously, but put them in a full-on serious story where they are the sole focus as the bad guys and have them do something big and then they'd be a serious threat. Like, an idea I had a few years back was a story where an army of Sontarans, being annoyed about not being able to join in on the Time War, actively go out and hunt a group of Daleks and actually succeed in beating them. The Doctor then arrives expecting to find the Daleks to defeat only to discover that the Sontarans did what he thought was impossible. I can just imagine a scene where he's creeping around corridors looking for the enemy when suddenly he sees a destroyed Dalek just sitting there in the middle of a corridor, and then as he moves on he finds more and more until accidentally bumping into a patrol of Sontarans and getting captured. Something like that would really raise their threat level.
@@chtholly8084I think honestly the issue is that there are a lot of villains that are incredibly similar to them, but also just have more going on. I genuinely feel like you can replace Sontarans with literally anything, like, I dunno, Ice Warriors. They've just never had alotta development, and I just think that's down to them just being a throw away idea. They're Klingons with a worst design. Yeah, you could have them kill a companion but ... Do you wanna see a Santaran all the damn time? I don't. At Best, they're a little campy addition to a story. At worst they're boring.
I'd love to see more of this format. Plus, while the Judoon aren't my favourite Doctor Who baddies, they would make my top 10, and I'd love to see them explored a little more. (And, more accurately, the Shadow Proclamation explored through them. Like, are they some kind of space UN? Is there a council leading them? Where do they get their authority from? Are there sectors of space that reject their authority the way Japan rejected that of the League of Nations? If they are the out of space police, how come they do basically nothing whenever end-of-reality level threats occur? Just how many Judoon do they have on their payroll and how can they afford them?) Yeah, that got away from me. :)
I loved this video and the format. Please do more. I'm not that well versed in the expanded media, so I always love getting recommendations and plot-summaries on EM events I'm not familiar with, and to delve into villian by villain...
The p is silent in corp, it's actually pronounced the same as core. Probably derived from french but I don't care enough to check. Anyhow nearly 7 minutes in and I'm enjoying the video.
Desperate Mohammedan the World's Strongest Arab the word you’re thinking of with a silent end is corpse spelled the same as with a dead body and pronounced core
Desperate Mohammedan the World's Strongest Arab + Major Squizzard OP, you’re wrong because ‘corp.’ would be short for ‘corporation’ and the p is not silent. Squizzard, you’re wrong because ‘corpse’ is always pronounced with a hard p and s. The word you’re both thinking of is ‘corps’, which is (as the OP was trying to get at) pronounced ‘core’
Bit of trivia the Second and Fourth Doctors have cameos in the 1985 startrek novel "Ishmael" and the 2005 novel "Harbinger" features a Sonic screwdriver one of the characters stole from "a rather daft chap" and that's just the tip of the Iceberg
I dont think chibnall forgot that they were banned from earth. theyre shown to be aware that they are breaking some serious rules, but the time lords pay well.
I like how we all have no idea what Chib is doing/plans to do with Fugitive. I also like how much you know about the extended media. Honestly I'm just glad they finally got another episode, I think nuwho doesnt use it's new monsters enough and brings back the oldies too often sometimes.
i've just watched this whole series in reverse back to back. amazing, i think the best was the story from a comic of 10,11 and 12 seeing their worst timelines and 12 being a villain.
Ooh boy! Is there anything more on the reapers! I always loved the reapers and i’ve been disappointed they never showed up when almost time and space was leaking out of those cracks!
I liked the format for this video btw. But if you do the Master... please be a little kinder to the character than you were last time you did a video on him/her? Just for me? I'll still like whatever video you put out.
9:55 - Police or mercenaries... Considering what been happening here in America in the last five years, the line between bot sides is thin and thinning out still.
If there is ever a Star Trek Doctor Who crossover, I would love to see a partially assimilated Jadoon! And as you mention one that has become a detective, now I also want to see him in a trench coat and hat like in one of those Dixon Hill holodeck novels
I love the judoon they are just so good there like one of the only modern who villains that I would be happy to see recur not just there coming back eh
4:45 I figured it out: doctor who has no canon so there was no reason to declare it non-canon. They did this on purpose so they don't have to pay too much attention to continuity.
Krillitanes should have been brought back. They could be so versitile and we can see their appearances change over time from the ridiculous to the very mundane
judoon might be my favorite just cuz they're so weird and the episode where I first encountered them (obv the one on the moon) is really cool to me and I really liked a song someone made on RU-vid about them haha but that's just me
I HAVE SOMETHING COMPLETELY SEPARATE TO SAY INVOLVING IDEAS FOR (JUDOON) SPECIES: Now I wonder if there might be a separate type of race faction of the (Judoon) alien species? For instance I can imagine a separate type of (JUDOON) race that are a bit smarter than the usual known race faction of (Judoon) species, and I can imagine that the skin color of the separate smarter tribe race could be either brown, or Light-Brown colored skin, and to add I can imagine that they chose to live separate from the rest of the other half of (JUDOON) race because they don’t approve of the way they behave, and because how they live their lives. To add I can imagine that the separate faction half of the (JUDOON) alien species could have different colored eyes for the males, and for the females; Such as I imagine that each of the females could have two different colors to their eyes one is purple, the other color for their eyes is blue, and the two colors for the males eyes is orange, and the other for the males eyes is green for the race of the smart JUDOON type of race. Plus to add I can imagine that the smart type of (JUDOON) race could have a certain amount of hair on their heads just like that of rhinos do have, and I can imagine that there are two different types of hair colors; An so I imagine that the females of the smart race hair colors could be dirty-blond colored, and dark-red colored hair, and to add the hair color of the males could be black, and the other hair color of the males might be dark-purple colored. I also want to add that I can imagine that the separate faction of the (JUDOON) alien species are not mercenaries; But instead what I imagine is that the smart separate faction of Judoons are made up of a combination of artists, builders, a few scientists, and a few mind-readers, and to add the separate faction type of Judoons live on the far side of their home planet: JUDOONIA, and also to add the size of the smart Judoons’s brains are the same size as human brains. Plus to add I can imagine that the separate faction labeled as the smart Judoons; I imagine that the small group of scientists that exists some of them secretly are working really hard on a way to leave there home planet without getting noticed by the mercenary faction, and I can imagine while they are doing that they might be doing research on finding planets that they could go to, and then settle down on as their new home planet to live on. “So anyway these ideas of a separate faction of another type of JUDOON race; Is what I imagine to be introduced someday in the near future either on another Season of (DOCTOR WHO) or on a spinoff t.v. show series that I can imagine being connected to the (DOCTOR WHO) show series.”
I do not see them as villains the first appearance on doctor who the doctor did explain that they were space police you could argue and say then the police in the real world are villains because that's what you are suggesting
they can be both police and mercenaries, because they are neither. They are a private police force, who enforce the laws of whoever hires them. This also enables them to undertake mercenary work using similar contracts.
