Broke down eagle bus. Sunday bus rescue. Never a dull weekend around here.

This eagle bus was on it’s maiden trip home for it’s new owner. Unfortunately they hired a different mechanic yesterday who only made things worse then left them stranded with the bus inoperable. Clutch problems but he only attempted to address a symptom and not the problem.

It is a sickening feeling when you break down on the road it has happened to me. The hundreds start to flow like blood and a good amount of STRESS and fear starts to cloud your thinking. What do i do. Thank god for Scott and his wonderful son saved the day as always. Bless the both of you GREAT mechanics.

Yes, breakdowns are sickening. One time I broke down with my old Bronco with an engine I just built a few weeks prior. No power, popping, ... of course it was in the pouring rain.. I coasted into a weigh scale, next thing I know I had 5 cops around me, what do you do but call a tow truck... next morning I'm like it sounds like ignition timing .. . I popped the distributor off and the advance arm C clip was missing so the ignition timing was drifting.. 2 minute fix with no tools required. But your brain doesn't work well under stress.

This past summer, my Chevy P30 Chassis Motorhome broke down several times while on a cross country trip. The biggest problem I had was getting someone to work on a coach that was over 15 years old. NO RV place would take me. I did however find a truck tire shop who repaired my rear suspension. On the way back, my brake pad broke driver's side and we had no choice but to keep driving to my wife's friend's house which wasn't too far away luckily. Once again, NO one would even work on my brakes except a mobile RV tech who made the trip out on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend to do the repair. The LAST issue (bad alignment which wore my front tires down) was handled by yet another truck tire shop who also did the alignment. I was fortunate (and perhaps a blessing in disguise) that the costs of repairs done by the two shops and the tech were reasonable. I lay the final blame on my RV mechanic, like the mechanic who serviced this bus for the reason why I had the problems. He was supposed to inspect it for this trip and the items that failed were all PREVENTABLE had he did his job. I can say we are both blessed to have dedicated people like Scott and Casey, the guy who took care of me who go out of their way to assist us.

This just shows how much your services are required, Most mechanics may know trucks and cars but few understand buses like you do. Most just think they are same as a truck but your experience and knowledge shows who different they are in many ways. My father in law was a car and truck mechanic for many years but he is the first to admit that apart from the engine and gear box and some other basic things the bus is totally different mainly because of the facts that things like these linkages are setup so differently to a truck, longer and in many cases work in reverse. I also like how you always treat everyone with respect and try to teach them how to help themselves in future with imparting your knowledge to them. Like he said your the bus doctor you check it out and tell him what is needed as you know best.

That was really great of you to help this guy and bus out with their clutch. It looks like a robust mechanical clutch linkage, but I a hydraulic clutch would likely work much better because is eliminates some many variables a mechanic linkage has with drag, pivots, and strain on these components can cause them to shift changing the clutch engagement point at the moment of clutch engagement.

One of the beauties of the 8V-71N is that it puts out reasonable HP for a non-turbo (318HP but marine versions do 350HP with different injectors????), and that isn't enough power to hurt its self.

Scott and Tyler, good video and public relations. Nice seeing an older Eagle with the tag axle instead of the pusher axle setup. As one person said, just because you're a truck mechanic doesn't mean that you know about buses, and not everyone is willing to work on the old two- stroke Detroit Diesel mechanical, or DDEC setups. Serviceability is one thing different as many things are 'shoehorned' in the compartment and hard to get at.

Bellcrank failure due to wear is pretty common on 01 and 05 Eagles. They typically have needle bearings in them, and the one most commonly worn out is the one pretty much over the transmission. A pain to get to sometimes, especially in a converted coach. I personally had a very late 05, and solved the problems by installing an air throttle. Also put in a 6V-92 engine and automatic trans later on. They make an air operated modulator for the transmission, which solved another potential problem.

Joe homeowner or one of his buddies think they are mechanics, but really have no idea what they are doing. I end spending twice as much time on the repair as I should have, just because I have to straighten out the mess they made before I can actually fix the problem. Sad, but true I have heard several bad stories about this specific chain of repair facilities. From over torquing bolts to cross threading, to putting steer tires on the rear rims and so on. I don't know where they are getting their mechanics from but the really must do a better job of training and interviewing new staff. Personally I have never liked loves and steer away from them in favor of the more expensive factory dealer repair facilities or for thing like tires I go to GOODYEAR. I run a search and rescue unit and we can not have any of our equipment down for a split second. I am glad he called you and you were able to get him on his way. Sadly it looks like he is going to have to spend money to fix what LOVES did to his coach and if it were me I would send they your bill and the replacement bill
