@@FishFind3000 for sure even a broken clock is right twice a day, these car makers accidentally built a reliable one. They all have, but they’ve all pushed out poorly engineered hot garbage for the most part. Legit had a guy lecturing me about German car reliability post explaining his Magnum not pushing over 100k miles, whilst leaning on my f10 with 250k miles lmao. Bmw has built some amazing engines. That’s why Toyota staked their reputation on it. Common trope in America. American car good, everyone else bad. Lame nonsense

For those people who disliked this video, I really wonder what's there to dislike. This guy does enormous work, and he puts it in one video, instead of prolonging it in never-ending series, like some other youtubers. Sreten, keep up the good work, and I wish you the best of luck in the future restoration projects.

Yeah it's odd to see a thumbs down for a video that just impressed the hell out of us. But a thumbs down means nothing negative to the channel, just counts as a viewer engagement which is good for Sreten. Thumbs up or down just count the same! Both positive infact! Finding shrapnel in a sump is enough to make an idiot hit dislike. They dislike the event, likely not the video. Or it's evil twin and his homies.

Sreten you're really balls-deep on this one - many RU-vidrs 'talk' about how time consuming and hence expensive repairs to these engines are, but you're the only one showing why. Keep up the great work

Not only we see Sreten "Suffer" but we can have a peak in to the insides of these beasts without experiencing the feeling of impending doom when it comes to put it all up together. When you reassemble this engine, don’t forget to replace that nail in the sump using the correct orientation, cleaned of course. Looking forward to part three of project der Nagelmotor.

@@anthonyk I would bet they used the nail as a sort of funky way to lock the engine in TDC, or to hold something else in place. Then just forgot about it, or dropped it and didn't care enough to remove the sump. Bad workmanship for sure.

@@anthonyk Yeah I wonder too. Could be lots of reasons though, production fault making the plastic weak, damage from previous work on the timing, low oil, could be anything.

Good advice. Please look up the BMW part nr of the nail for Sreten's convience. Could be superseded by part nr of an upgraded nail though.

The complexities of this engine baffle me and you just turn every corner with ease. I can’t imagine a main stealership tackling this and doing a perfect job there just wouldn’t be the time or care. Imagine the labour charge you’d need to sell the house. You are a brave man this was a visual and technical feast. 👍👍👌

I'm working on the older M60 V8 by BMW at the moment which seems way more mechanic friendly 😎. Respect for the work on this Alpina! Makes you figure how many 'normal' 745i's end up on the scrap yard because of similar issues 😅

At a stealer ship it would be done faster. They don't do this process. They go about it a different way. They do not drop the subframe. Plus they have all the specialty tools needed to speed it up also. Either way I wouldn't want to pay for the labor

@@misterx3492 very interesting the similarities to the M60 as it got stripped down. Intake ports are identical, the lower timing case was an evolution with same water pump casting. Looks like they went back to the plastic guides after the M62 wishbone

@@mtbhussler indeed! Just got the inlet manifold off of mine today and it the ports indeed look very similar. Same for the waterpump casting indeed! The plastic wiring loom parts for the coils are so huge on the m60 they nicely made these smaller on the n62. Some improvements, some stuff was kept. Funny to see. I'm freshing mine up before it goes into a E30. Duplex chain and guides still look fine.. think i'm gonna leave that for what it is 😅

Sreten, i am amazed that you dare to take on a projects like this without the 'proper' education for a mechanic. And you just do it. Properly, thoroughly, neat, tidy. You even find time to cut the recordings in a way that all work is covered without getting too long. Absolutely great! Add your great sense of humour, and 40 minutes feel like 5. Thank you! Are you going to change all sprockets of the timing-chain as well, or are they in good condition?

The best piece of advice I can give is to stay organized, clean have a workshop manual label every part you pull of label every wire connector take as many photos as possible.

Your work as always is done to a standard that puts most "Profesional" to shame. Also your presentation skills enable people to see why some workshop bills are on the large size! A "Ton of work" was actually how many hours? Multiply that by a ballpark figure of €80 per hour then the parts. Pretty soon your wallet feels like it's had a "Prison Manlove Gangbang" You have my utmost respect and I've been turning spanners as a Mechanic for nearly 35 years.

Wow. I used to work on brand new Fords in Australia back from that period and man they're a piece of cake compared to this. It's a good thing you have the other 4 post lift setup so you can do other projects while waiting for parts. Because this looks like it may take quite awhile to get out and going again. The real big kicker here though is not only did you have to do all the mechanical work you had to worry about being a camera guy, director, producer and editor and however many other jobs come with all of that, just to get the videos out! That is why I am a patron and do a little bit to support you. It sure beats paying the UK TV tax every month. Roll on to the next installment.

My son and I have done VSS, alternator, starter, knock sensors, water pump and innumerable other repairs ourselves at our home on our 200k mile e60 N62. We feel your pain. That shot of the engine hanging from the sling, the subframe hanging, parts all over the shop, it's priceless. And terrifying. Thanks for bringing a sense of humor and entertainment to repairs that are truly arduous and mind bending. We enjoy your channel greatly.

Many years ago my friend had one of these cars and traded it into the dealer on what was the new X6M when it came out. I was so upset that he did not offer me the car to buy as the dealer got the trade for a song. Now looking at this repair I am happy to have not had the car and enjoying my e46 M3. Even paying someone else to do the rod bearings I have done all the other maintenance myself. My hats off to you on this huge job!

I love the way the engineers built this masterpiece of simplicity! Every mechanics' dream to work on. Plenty of space and an intuitive and simple straightforward piece of art of an engine! Excellent attention to detail and set up for maintenance ease. Just think of all the money they save the owners on labor alone. ...nope. Not at all! Dang it! You're a beast of a mechanic! Keep up the fantastic job. And the balance between humor, good advice, and information is second to none. Best of luck getting that puzzle back together in working order. I used a small nail (instead of a simple metal pin that my tool kit didn't come with) to release tension on the timing chain tensioner when I did the VANOS seals on an M50TU. Thankfully I didn't drop it in the oil pan. Perhaps when they were timing it they used a nail instead of some special tool? Not sure. Great work as always Sreten!! This Alpina is proving to be a worthy challenge!

There are other ways nails can get into an engine. In a large service garage, besides mechanical repairs, oil changes and tire repair are also done. Tire repair guy pulls a nail from a flat tire, throws nail at garbage can, nail bounces off side of garbage can and lands directly in the 6 quart container used to carry oil from the bulk oil to the car. Oil change guy grabs container, fills with oil, pours oil into funnel in the car, nail is now inside the valve cover. Yeah, that happened but was caught before damage was done because their hand was on the funnel and felt something jiggle down the neck. I pulled a 2 inch nail out of that low mile, almost new truck before it was ever started.

Hi mate, been a follower since the early days - congrats on what you've build your page in to. Can I make a request for some of your non-mechanical fans? Could you put an arrow on screen to some of the more exotic parts you talk about? eg: you point out the eccentric shaft, but all i see is the internal bits of an engine. An arrow would help in this situation. Many thanks! :-)

I hope you declared that nail to the German customs department. Thinking about it. If you declared it as a "Nail Cassette" (for a workshop tool) you may have paid less import duty that you did declaring it as a car. As always the video is fantastic. I also use the Milwaukee power tools, (I work on the railway) they're simply the best.

Iam amazed. When i saw that you bought a B7, i was sure that it´s going to be a journey. But oh man, when you see this, in such detail, working on M54/M62 seems like a sunday snack. I currently own a 2016 Mustang GT manual transmission which I purchased in April 2019. You get a hell of a lot of car for the price. I haven't had any issues with it, yet, touch wood. It's one of the most beautiful sounding cars I've ever had the pleasure to own. Those 5 litre Coyote V8's are pretty awesome. I'm a regular consumer of this channel..all the entertainment, knowledge, fun that you bring. I love your sense of humour but today I have a new found respect for your work, it's so difficult and loads of patience require to handle it and you never forget to replace those small oil seals and bolt. Another M539 Restoration video flashes by. What a monumental task - the way Alpina have managed to stuff that engine bay is almost beyond belief, it must have taken an unfathomable amount of time and effort. I have everything crossed that the rebuild goes to plan - haven't looked forward to a video as much as the next instalment of Project Chicago in a long time.

You know what would be a pretty cool video? Behind the scenes how you manage all the screws and parts for such a complex engine bay/entire car. do you bag them? Maybe also include shop maintenance, how you keep your shop clean and everything at its place etc. :)

Aaand 15min later you say you keep them in the holes, same with cardboard for oilpan. I ponder how you do that for e.g. the hood or other panels where you cant just leave them in or theres more than one type of bolt.

Omg. The Bay is so full of engine, its absolutely cramped in there. Compare that to your older Models. And you still have the courage to dive in there and take it all apart. I thought you worked in IT Databases or something. This is Mindboggling! Well done!

That’s an incredibly complex car, I’m in awe of your confidence and skills. Hard to believe that after 150 years of the development of internal combustion to this point, and engines such as this one in particular, it’s all going to stop in favour of batteries.

Your channel is an absolute holy grail of finest automobile content, something that gives me enormous pleasure watching and there is NO other youtube channel out there that excites me so much! I've never had any mechanic experience in my life except for building stuff from LEGO as a child and I feel what you're doing is far from being easy, however your persistence and analytical approach towards car restoration proves that everything is possible if you really desire! I'm seriously considering renting a garage and purchasing an old car (preferably W124 Merc) and spending long evenings in the garage gradually bringing the car to its finest original condition! Your channel makes me feel confident something might work out for real! Great thank you and keep up the good work!

I have been working on cars for nearly ten years and have a classic collection similar to yours. Never, ever have I worked on an engine like this, this has just reaffirmed why I never buy newer cars! It almost reminded me of when I first started learning how a car works with Mighty Cars Mods tutorials. I would be intimidated taking that on, I'll stick to an engine swapped E21 thanks!

With my 850Si, just changing plugs and checking the V12 ignition system according to the workshop manual was scary. Even removing the driver's seat and fixing the seat back lumbar pump made me dizzy trying to put it all back together. Seeing your work on this Alpina modified V8 OMG - Sreten you are absolutely amazing - great work. 🤩
