It's always fun to turn a new, to me, species of wood and this Sumac is no exception. Inside is some beautiful color and grain but outside is a feature I consider really special. The bark is also very nice. Finished in shellac.
There are also some new sanders shown in this video and they are now available for you if you feel they can help you. I'm am not sponsored and receive nothing for this, I just want you to know about them in case they may help you with your woodturning. www.TuffyMarginez.com

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I am a welder millwright by trade so I can’t put much time into it as I would like to but I get a lot of compliments on what I have done but to me it’s never good enough I guess it’s because I k where all the imperfections are. I am definitely my own worst critic. I guess my biggest obstacles are my finishes. Do you have any videos in particular that I could watch specifically to finishes that you would recommend.? Any and all advice is welcome. Hope you have a good even Mr. Phil

To all the readers of these comments, I wish to propose a toast to Phil Anderson, the man whose bark is always better than his bite. If you wish to join me in this toast it should be done with prune juice, served in a bowl with a knot hole, worm holes or missing bark inclusion in the lower half of the bowl. So ladies and gentlemen drink fast. Phil, you're the man. Keep up the great work.

Doesn't get any more interesting than a piece like that. I scored 2 sumac trees last week from the burn pile on my sister's property. Rootballs and all except for branches. Wood has a gold tone. Still green but sealed and stored. When I bought my first lathe 38 years ago I used to scrounge branches from state parks and sumac was one of the first pieces I turned. Didn't really make anything just happy to be turning. Everything became a candle holder. Always recalled the gold toned wood.

Hello Phil, I have watched your videos for a long time. I really like what you do. I gave away both my wood lathes a while back because I was tired of spindle turning. You have made me want to get another lathe. I don't have a lot of room so I am looking for one with a shorter bed and a wider swing. As far as I am, concerned you have the best turning videos on RU-vid. You and I are about the same age, I turn 72 late last year. I was very sorry to learn about your spouse's passing away. Hang in there. I need you to get me started & keep me going. I live in eastern Kansas. We have some interesting wood. A lot of sycamore, red & white oak, eastern red bud & Bois D'Arc (also known Osage Orange & Hedge), mulberry, maple, ash & various fruit wood. Don B.

Howdy, Don! I'm happy you are considering getting back into turning and trying some bowls. When I was 69 I posed the question "am I too old to buy a new lathe?" The response was overwhelmingly, "go for it!" I'm so glad I did! My turning and my viewers are what get me out of bed in the morning. You just have to have a hobby to keep busy and keep the mind working, I think. Sounds like you have a great selection of potential turning stock. Go for it! Merry and Happy to you and yours, Don! 😊

What a beautiful piece of wood Phil. And a terrific job of capturing all those natural features in it. The branch is by far the star of this one. I love how it wraps around. In one view it looked like it was trying to peak around so the camera could see it. I could almost hear it saying...Hey Look At Me! I have turned a few pieces of Sumac but not being crotch pieces look nothing like this one. Plus there are different types I guess. The Sumac plant is some type of poison ivy. Not the trees though so your safe. Oh those sanders look great! Great job my friend, Gary

Hi Phil. Once again you have reached deep inside a piece of firewood and turned out a beautiful work of art. No sweeteners, MSG, or colorants of any kind. LOL Especially no resins to fill voids. I don't see much point in using a nice but small piece of burl then add 10 gallons of resin and turn away all but a bare glimpse of the burl leaving a nicely turned chunk of colorful resin. When you turn a piece I can see the natural imperfections and see how you found a face or an ear or even a stogie. LOL. I look forward to seeing more of your magical works of art. Also, thanks for the lessons. Bill Riley

I really enjoy your calm, sensible approach to your projects, but every now and again you make me realize how dangerous woodturning is. This piece was virtually all crotches and cracks, ridges and rot, so I was braced for a flying gouge, but the result is an exotic mollusk shell in about four dimensions, and you never turned a hair. I'll stick to my knitting. Thanks.

The inside looked like a Van Gogh painting! Its a cool piece! I got lucky yesterday and scored a 3 foot long section of a plum tree! It's only 5-6" around but it looks like it will be pretty colorful. See you in the next one Phil

Cool, Plum is a great wood to turn, so much color! Enjoy! 😊

Another beautiful and really interesting bowl, Phil, the angle is well chosen, you really have got the eye for it! Normal, picture perfect bowls seem so boring in comparison! Watching you turn, I have grown to liking your „crooked“ bowls so much more, they‘ve got character 👏🏻👍🏻😊 Thank you Phil, keep going 🙏🏻

Thank you so much, Morning Song! 😊 Delightful name! I'm so glad you appreciate the nature in my pieces. I feel as you do, once you have turned a few pieces like this, a round salad bowl just won't cut it. I find those kinds of things very hard to turn. The odd pieces just get the creative juices flowing.

Thanks again, Phil, a lousy week for me, has been brought to a perfect close by watching you play in harmony with nature to produce another invaluable art piece. You and all your family members stay safe and keep warm over that side of the globe.

I have no words for this piece Phil. You did such a great job. I love that you freely admitted at the outset that you had no idea what it would be. You just carried on and let the weird and wonderful beauty of the piece emerge. It became the piece that all along was there inside to be revealed. You performed a kind of magic here Phil, a transformation. Fascinating to watch and to learn from. Thank you.
