I enjoy turning natural pieces, mostly bowls. I try to leave as much nature in a piece as possible. Bark and bark inclusions, voids, cracks, are left alone for the most part. Though I've been turning for a few years I still consider myself to be in the learning stages. I would love it if you would come along for the ride. I'm sure we can share with each other what we have learned along the way.
Nice one Phil. A really smart looking bowl. Your time & persiverence spent on it was well worth it. Thanks for that & letting us all see it. What a stunning end result. Definitely a keeper there 👍🏴
Phil, Nice bowl , it came out better than I expected. Phil I would like to buy some of that stuff you call CA. I know that it's super glue right? How do you keep the needle from clogging up between uses? If I was in Home Depot or Lowes what would I be searching for as a brand name?
Nicely done Phil! I’m glad to hear that you prefer the natural properties that might cause a bowl to remain thick. I have found that truth in some of my turnings too, but am a little sheepish that I didn’t thin the bowl out further. This piece is a showcase for natural bowls everywhere. Thanks so much!
Cool, thanks Karen! 😃 I do like bowls that are a little chunky. They have some heft that give a feeling of value, to me. On the other hand, I usually try to make them as thin as the characteristics of the wood will allow. Luckily for me, I like weird wood so they often have thick sides because otherwise, they would have holes in them!
Hi Phil this is an awesome Maple Burl it has wonderful grain and all the nooks and crannies they make the Burl stand out. When you look in the inside of this piece it looks like two eyes and a mouth. The live edge Maple bowl is magnificent full of character The bottom looks like its got a lizard on it. I love it its in the top 5 of your items you have made . Take xare Amanda xx❤
Continued amazement at your ability. Makes a goal of approaching an idea to keep me awake. On a technical point, do you have a recipe for sealer vs finish ? I can only find shellac in a can at my supplier down here in the desert.
Thank you, Lewis! 😃 I buy both my sealer, Zinsser Seal Coat and my Zinsser clear shellac from Amazon in quart cans, ready to use and I don't modify them in any way.
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil another brilliant video, although I don't think I could see the faces but certainly I could see the whale and dolphin. And when the bowl was on the turntable I could easily see the chatoyance.
I wached someone use acrilics to fill in the cracks and holes in what he was turning. It could make what you turn a little easier: But Your way of turning when the turning is finished is far superior. The bark, grain, holes cracks chain saw marks add charictor to you finished bow plate, are fantastic.
Phil, does the spirit ever move you to turn something you don't normally turn? If so, what would that be? Today's offering, very nice, as always!! Hope you are well, me, I am having to deal with a Covid19 this past week, caught it in time because of the new medication that is available. Very costly but worth it!!
A few times/things, Colleen. Anytime you see me turning something that is not an odd shape with bark on it, I'm uncomfortable. Anytime you see me turning something between centers, like a vase, I'm uncomfortable. I used to turn a lot of small things like yo-yo's, whistles, pens, bottle stoppers, etc. None of that appeals to me anymore. Oh, so sorry about the Covid! Yes, I had it and probably had the same medication. Made it much more tolerable and got over it in just a few days. Best wishes for a quick recovery for you, too! 😊
I think I have figured out why you do what you do! You are looking for the magic that appears in each piece of wood you turn! You manage to bring out the hidden beauty in each piece! Thank you!!
Hi Phil, I was rehearsing yesterday for a performance with my Choral Society this evening and as you know I can only manage one thing a day, the remainder of the day I can only eat and sleep. So I'll be watching this video tomorrow morning, see you then it looks an exciting piece of wood, can't wait.👍😴
Let's see, bumblebee on the chain saw cut, newt on the bottom, and a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis on the inside. I love the dolphin and whale tale though! It's really got chatoyancy! Really a beauty. I've always got purple somewhere on my skin. Usually I don't know where it came from! My dog and I had to come to an agreement about passing through one particular door in my house. Unless I tell him to go first I'm the one who leads because we had a little mixup that ended up with me on the floor several months ago. We both felt bad about that but I was the one who ended up with purple skin! 💜
Love your imagination, Gwynn! 😊 I do know what you mean about your dog. I often approach Curly Cat and am afraid to take another step for fear he will decide to go the same way! Happens more often than not!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I've got one like that! He likes to sit right behind me when I'm in the kitchen and I never know which way to turn to avoid catastrophe! 😄
As you commented. this is your first emerging goblet, you could have fooled me!! It looked you have turned them a lot!! It looked like a professional turned it. This is how i approach things like that too. If you didn't tell us you didn't where to start, you sure fooled me. I start turning and let the chips fall where they may and don't quit until i am satisfied. I Shure hated to see you had to remove the foot, it would have made a great feature point of this project, but it had to go in order to make things look proport. Again I it. KEEP ON TURNING
Very nice piece Phil, I see the Dolphin and Whale and lots of Chatoyance, looks amazing, imagine what the people who have been smoking are seeing 😂. Thanks again for your time. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Howdy up there, Lorne! 😊 I have ziplock bags. I put the rag and the brush in the same bag, close it part way, roll the bag up tight and finish closing it. Rags last for months and brushes for almost as long.
Hi Phil, in regards to your storm door closing fast. There's a screw on the hydraulic end of the door closer you can adjust to close the door faster or slower.
The downward grain spiral was accented by your finish you chose. The horizontal growth stress marks in this piece made the uniqueness of this piece really made the one of a kind look. Great job!!!!! KEEP ON TURNING
You did a great job on your ornaments . I wasn't quite ready for the Christmas season yet, but you reminded me I dont have much time until the season is here. I sure dont want to be late. I better hustle up and get started on my Christmas Ornaments started. I got some ideas and instructions from you again. I better get busy!!!!! KEEP ON TURNING
Always love your turnings. Most hydraulic door closers have adjustments for both the swing and the closing speed. Most likely on the end. Just saying 😊
Abounding chatoyance comes across well on camera. No, I didn't see the dolphin, but I did see the whale. So, I guess the title of this bowl could be "Accidental Oceanic Mammalian Collision". 😂 The face I saw was one of the characters from the Ice Age movies. Of course, I may be just a little crazy, too.😂
Another live edge beauty, some lovely markings in there, and yes if you've been smoking we have cos we can see the whale n dolphin . All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Beautiful grain, beautiful bowl. "works for me" Thanks for sharing. BTW I can empathize with the bruising. I get them sometimes and don't know how II did it!
Beautiful bowl Phil! The chatoyance is stunning and the live edge is the only way to go😊! I see a penguin on top of an iceberg 😂. I Have learned so much watching your videos and I love every minute of it. You host the most enjoyable and informative channel. Thank you!
