This press has worked like a charm for my projects ru-vid.comUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with.This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

Yet a great video Steve 👍 The Strands/Arboga drill presses are super common here in Scandinavia. Your model is a S32M and the smaller one is a S68. Great machines.. You should be able to get manual for your machines. It you need help with parts i can try to help though a Danish dealer. They still make machines in this brand, same as Arboga, Solberga and others. (Almost identical machines) Some parts are not made as good as they used to be. If you ever want to repaint it. They were painted in Light blue Hammerrite paint, with 'hammered effect' Best regards Denmark.

Indeed, according to the manual, the gear reference seems to be 2HS1961

Thanks for watching. I agree they are extremely well made. They are a bit hard to find around here. I like the original colour. My smaller one hasn't been repainted and looks pretty good. I'd much rather have original paint. Thanks for the offer on searching for parts👍. Chances are Ill end up having to making it.

Nowadays the company making Strands are called MSC Machinery Scandinavia, according to the website they are manufactured in Rosenfors in Småland, so you seem to be mistaken in your claim that they are Asian made.

@@the_hate_inside1085 you are right. They are made in Rosenfors. - like Strands used to be made. Now they are under Machinery Scandinavia (one roof) Strands, Arboga, Solberga, IMA & their new line Rosenfors. All similar machines. I've edited my text as it were misleading. 😊👍 (Didn't know they were 'back' and all being made in Rosenfors, but did talk with my tool supplier today about it) Those models are also made as copies with allot of other labels/names, from Asia. I've owned one myself, and it were poorly made and far from the good old ~Strands.

Missed you last week. Saturday morning felt weird without a Steve Summers video to watch with my coffee. One of the reasons I keep coming back to watch your videos is because of the variety of content that you put out, it never gets stale. You're not afraid to tackle any job and that, to me, is the sign of a real blessed mechanic. Make the content that makes you happy, and your followers will love you for who you are. You and your family are such real down to earth people and remind me of the prior generations that did whatever they have to, to build their humble abode into something they could be proud of. It's not built on credit cards, but resourcefulness and perseverance. I love it.

Hi Steve - you're a braver man than I am. I design & build electronic geophysical instruments, and almost always use a professional card shop to make my blank circuit boards - two or four copper layers, platted-thru holes, silk-screened part IDs & location outlines, i.e. "the works". But I have occasionally made quick prototype {one-off} single-side circuit boards in my basement workshop over a single evening. Drilling small holes is difficult for me because I don't have a good drill press, but I get along fairly well with some cobbled-together drawer slides on/in hardwood rails running vertically to support one of my Dremel-clone high-speed rotary tools/drills. But a # 68 carbide bit is the smallest I've ever used, and they break insanely easily piercing through copper-clad fibreglass 1/16" card stock. To see you use a # 76 bit through mild steel was an eye-opener for me. Many thanks for the demo, and best of luck finding the missing phenolic gear.

There you are. I missed seeing you last week. Nice to have you back. The small parts we find in my shop go into a dedicated drawer in one of my top boxes. I started 40+ years ago collecting this and that. It has been pretty much full for 30 years and although I am searching for that wonder piece within the drawer never seems to go up or down as far as the level. That little drawer has saved many a job on a weekend when all the stores are closed. How aggravating to have a product fail like that. A shirt you can't wash is totally unacceptable. Hopefully someone here can get you what you need. Be it an OE gear or the needed measurements to allow you to make that piece. I think you have a good chance of both. You have a lot of good friends out there eh. Take care and I hope to see you next week.

I bought used this type of drill press and I called the dealer that sells new ones and he told me that it would outlive me as long as I never shifted the speeds with the motor running. If you do that you will strip out the phenolic gears. On my particular drill they are no longer made so you would be in the gear making business. So you are warned😉. I love the drill press and it also has auto feed but an earlier design.

I did not read all the comments someone may have already said something about this below. Anyway Kleen & Strip does make a paint stripper that is super powerful. The hardware store cans are not worth buying anymore. My local NAPA sells Aircraft Paint Stripper made by Kleen & Strip. It is bionic. It waters the eyes and burns skin. Like the old stuff from the hardware used to. And does a really good job of getting paint to loosen. Good luck with the drill press gear. Cheers

My 1948 Reid Surface Grinder was used once or twice before the Y axis was engaged after the travel stop. It had a poor repair that did not last. With the Y yoke broken manual Y did not work. The Reid at some time was converted from 2 phase to 3 phase and painted often by the City to look good. I bought it from someone that bought it at city action. I fixed the yoke, installed 2 VFD's, stripped, painted, and polished the brass. Its a new old grinder. My 1960's Beaver 54" BVRP MILL was decommissioned after someone pulled out the back gear rack pinion and hammered it back in. No parts are available. After much searching I found a rack spindle that looked close. I downloaded the STL file for the spindle and had a friend 3D print it. The printed fit with a little work so I ordered the steel one . After a total rebuild with 2 VFD's I have a beautiful 4 dro nt40 mill that was designed to be a climb mill.

Hi Steve, Something you should do with ALL printed stock is place a t-towel or cloth over the top on the print and iron it hot. All transfers or screen printing require heat the ensure that the print/ink is in-peregrinated fully. Sometimes in the factory process the heat might not be correct and hence it will fail.

Better machine tools from that era commonly use dbl set screws. Boy, if you miss them, it can ruin your day. I recently ran across an ER32 collet chuck w- a JT33 taper shaft for 35.00 on eBay. I slapped it on my drill press & went from a 0.002" run out to less than 0.0005". Plus I now have 3/4" capacity on the thing. I love it; best DP update since dropping the speed. We had 2 similar size drill presses British made with automatic downfeed chain driven from mainshaft but unfortunately no overload clutch. Operator was drilling large hole with blunt drill with auto feed engaged, the resultant force broke the dove tailed casting and the gearbox was left hanging on the electrical cable preventing it from falling on him. After repair auto feed was disabled on both machines for safety reasons.

I believe you still got pretty lucky on that. I bought a really old Marquette welder/generator and the 10hp Onan engine was supposedly stuck from sitting for years, but had ran maybe 10 years ago and was stored inside. It was super cheap and looks really cool. Except the engine had water in it and was locked so solid I didn’t think I would be able to tear it down. It’s been sitting for 2 years full of ATF and acetone in hopes of breaking through the rust enough to get it apart. I do not have high hopes. I do have a backup plan. A 7.5kw generator with 13hp Honda. Worst case, I fit the Honda in the old frame and have a retro looking modern generator. I’d much prefer to keep the old stuff, but it’s likely bound for the dumpster…

Hiya Steve. Future reference. you can make a very effective DIY stripper. especially for small parts. Sodium hydroxide in hot water. You can get sodium hydroxide at the box store as drain cleaner (draino clone) and you can also get it in stores where they sell soap making supplies. I have found it at walmart. Not at all safe for people or animals, so PPE is necessary, but a small steel container or pot on a hot plate that you drop the parts into will do the trick. This will not hurt steel or cast iron. You do need to be careful with non-ferrous metals like Aluminum or Brass. Just keep it off your skin and avoid heating to the point of steam as the steam will hurt your eyes, nose, lungs etc. Not boiling hot, just hot, or warm even. It can cause serious burns and turn flesh into soap, but is very effective at removing paint. The same solution was classically used in hot tanks. I have also used it as an electrolyte for rust electrolysis. More dangerous than washing soda, Calcium Carbonate, much more alkaline. Kills two birds with one stone, de-rust and removes paint in the same step.
@Henning_S.
@Henning_S. 2 года назад
It also removes old oil and grease, even if it is already hard like resin, perfect for cleaning very old fuel tanks from 2 stroke motorcycles with a thick layer of hardened 2stroke oil on the bottom. If you use acid for rust removal, you can dip the parts in sodium hydroxide solution to neutralize the acid, and it also forms a invisible protective layer on the steel, so it doesn't start rusting immediately...

We had two of these drill presses in our first year apprentice school. Both of them had their power feeds disabled so they could only be used manually. The instructor said it was for safety reasons and that first year apprentices were “not ready” for power fed drilling. The apprentices should really need to be able to “feel” the drill as it cut.

I helped out at an educational place with a Boice Crane drill press that was incredibly similar -- might've been just a slightly different year. We (gently) pulled the power feed off because we had a constant stream of people new to machine tools. Unfortunately, when it came time to put an 1.5" hole in a large piece of steel, it was a bit more work than we expected.. The quill return was also busted, so someone rigged a bucket of sand and a pulley in its place. Ugly, but hilarious (and well calibrated!), so the actual return spring was never fixed.

leaving parts in white vinegar overnight will strip paint very well. makes brass purple but polishes up back to normal without any problems.

I have found that product has been downgraded as well over the past few years. Probably the hottest thing out there still, but it doesn't burn through epoxies and urethanes like it used to.

Steve, I would love to see a collaboration if you have to make a gear!. 3d Print and then cast one with other makers here on the RU-vid community!

Broken ball... LOL. I just about wrote a comment warning you about the effing balls breaking off those cheap allens! Buy some that are metal all the way to the tee. They spin better, and you eliminate the handle flex. GeoD

One of the best cleaners I ever found was used machine oil. Keep a few gallons in a bucket, soak dirty parts over night, the oil "rewets" the oil that evaporated away leaving dirt, gunk and rust behind. Then to remove what is left behind, carbureator cleaner with a toothbrush size wire brush. A final rinse in spirits and the job would be done.

Often on machine tools, two screws, one on top of another are for adjustments. The first one in is the adjuster, the second one is the lock screw for the first one.

I am thinking that if you identify the gear pitch there should be a standard formula to come up with the shaft center to center distance and the pitch diameter and tooth count for the spur you are needing... There is likely some info in Machinist Handbook to do so.
