The electric vehicle revolution has taken the world by storm, with promises of low maintenance costs, easy repairs, and even battery swaps. However, the reality on the ground has been quite the opposite, as electric cars have proven to be not just less reliable but also exorbitantly expensive to repair. In fact, the situation has become so dire that many damaged EVs are heading straight to junkyards, leaving owners grappling with the harsh truth behind the hype. Let's delve into the five major reasons why this is happening, and explore the challenges that lie ahead for the EV industry.
1. EVs Struggle with Reliability Issues
One of the most significant challenges facing electric vehicles is their lack of reliability. In theory, EVs should be more reliable than their internal combustion counterparts due to their simpler design and fewer moving parts. However, in practice, this cutting-edge technology is still in its infancy and requires years, if not decades, of refinement to iron out the kinks.

Open source all the software and schematics so we can actually maintain these ourselves, then I'll consider one

Yes. But also not in the manufacturers best interest to allow consumers to perform repairs on their own, they want to continue selling cars every year. Manufacturers can't keep charging such high prices for all their new cars if people keep their old cars. You can buy subscriptions for access to aftermarket service manuals but those are far too expensive for the average consumer wanting to fix their own car to save money.

Exactly ZERO repairability for non warranty issues. No Thanks I will stick with Good Old reliable ICE. Last thing anybody wants is to be stuck in a bad sketchy spot wtih a dead car cause the iPad died. Fine to have a iPad in the car Just not running things !

Being permanently connected to some remote computer which can access the controls and on board cameras, and no ability/right to do maintenance and repairs at home are huge dealbreakers.

29k to replace a battery give me a break I can go to a honda dealership and get a 2022 civic used with low mileage for under 30k . My wife got her civic for 13.5k with 29k on the odometer it has a 150k on it now, and we have had zero issues in the 9 year's we have had it

48.000 kms so far. I've changed the tyres and the cabin air filters. It costs me between 0 and 8c per Kw to fill it up (about $4 max). Not sure where this scare video gets it's facts. I'm calling BS

EVs aren't new by any means. They have usually been viewed as inferior and because of that nobody has really invested into them so their technology is behind and people whom work on autos don't really focus on it as it is a "New" tech (Despite they were 1st introduced in the late 1800s). We really need to invest into battery technology IMO once we can start mass producing Graphene and thus Graphene batteries it will vastly improve EVs in range.

Too much cost cutting to make a profit. Tesla cut off so many projects that would have made their cars more bearable to drive like swappable batteries.. Now other manufactures are investing in the tech and flourishing

I don't remember the EV industry promising consumers that their vehicles would be cheap to run and maintain? All I see is propaganda from people like Elon Musk and some Tree Huggers in Washington DC. What made humans switch from using horses to owning early gasoline and electric vehicles more than 100 years ago? A combination of status symbol, health, safety and finally cost. Remember that the new gasoline powered cars also meant more restrictive laws on their operation. EV technology has the status symbol, arguably health, safety is about the same, but cost and restrictions are bad news. Inflation is getting worse, partly because of the cost of a deteriorating environment for people to live in, but mostly because of the Poor Commoner's inability to live in a so-called responsible way. Until big business makes living better in a deteriorating environment feasible for everyone, people will suffer and die needlessly. It's all about greed at the corporate board of director's level. Investors are willing to make the masses suffer so that they can live comfortably. It's more of a dog eat dog world than it ever was because of the tyranny involved.

Yeah, five major reasons that don't make any difference. The one single reason people are not buying EVs is because most don't have anywhere to charge them over night. But of course, you can't make a 9 minute long video with just that.

They go bad in like 4 years, and it costs more than the car to replace the battery. And what happens if there is an extended power outage? Those happen.

Listening to your spiel I noted that it was a SPIEL. Electric motors are simpler to work on and repair. I think the high cost of these cars and later the high cost of repairs is largely due to the greed of the manufacturer (Musk). It is the type of thing you would expect him to do. Musk is a hustler. Wake up. The Chinese are way ahead of the West. Electrics can be the cheapest, the safest, the longest lasting etc. If you don't want to do much to get a lot of cash, do what Musk does....raise the price. Also car makers prefer to make very expensive cars anyway and the high end lines are heavily sought after by sales forces looking for lots of profit. No way actually for the electric to be more complicated. These cars all have standard electrical equipment that is modular so service people don't have to know much but they still need to know how to get these parts.

If you mention statistics you have to name your sources. I read the exact opposite for point #1. Old electric cars like the BMW i3 (since 2012) are very reliable and still cheap to maintain. Batteries are still holding up. Statistically, electric cars burn less often than combustion cars. Other points in your video are correct but it doesn't mean that electric cars will be much more reliable than combustion cars. Some of your last arguments are just assumptions. With the market growing, we will have more professionals to fix cars, clone softwares for second hand cars, etc. Your conclusion is still positive despite the title 🙂
