In a less constrained situation, i had to light a bbq but had no lighter, not even a used one. I ended up rolling a sheet of paper into a cylindrical shape, and put it into an electric toaster. It worked! The paper did catch fire and i immediately learned that tranporting the lit sheet of paper from the toaster to the bbq was not that easy.

You can skip the grinding part if you have fluffy dandelions or something similar around. Just directly spark that instead. Source: Almost burnt down a (small) field as a kid playing with an empty lighter igniting dandelions.
@theablanca6803
@theablanca6803 2 года назад
Yeah, or you have on a fluffy jacket and can use some of the filling to start a fire. I've used tampons, esp those that's plastic wrapped. You have fire in 3 seconds. And you just use that to light your kindlings. A cotton swab that you fluff apart does the trick as well, I just had to try and I almost burned my fingers :)
@clippedwings225

Yeah this was my thought! If you have a very hairy sort of tinder like some sorts of tree bark then you can spark directly into it and it will catch the spark. Uses less effort and ferrocerium that way/

My hubby showed me this using a tiny amount on a cigarette paper. Gathering it where the fold is helps to concentrate the bits of ferrocerium so you don’t need a huge amount. The composition or weight of the cigarette paper may also help it to take flame more easily, I’m not sure about that. Also it helps to turn the wheel the opposite way to gather the ferrocerium quicker.

One of the two people talking about grinding the ferro dust directly into the tinder pile didn't know what the speaker was talking about. Glad you figured it out eventually. Really, anything you can do to increase the surface area makes it easier to catch a spark, whether it's making dust or fluffing up your tinder. You can gather cotton sock lint, or you can use slivers of plastic or other chemical accelerants that you would ordinarily not want to burn (because fumes).

I guess lesson number one is: prepare! This is what I miss in/learned from this video: first you prepare a shelter out of the wind and rain, then you prepare dry material and a fireplace with thin twigs and larger pieces of wood. Only when you have everything ready you can start collecting the dust from the ferrite core from the lighter and try to actually make the fire. It's funny how actually showing how it's not done, teaches you something about how it should be done :)

what you can also do, which works slightly better as you can then put everything on top of it afterwards, is use the plastic at the end, kinda make a tiny pile of plastic bit (but ofc just tiny tiny pieces) and then just put your dust of the lighter on that. Then you can light the dust, which will light the plastic (you won't really see the flame but you'll notice the effects of it) and then put your things on top of there, making it sorta easier. I'm not sure if this actually works but this is what I saw in another video where someone explained how you can make fire with an empty lighter
