In this video, I will show the restoration of the USSR WW2 helmet. This model of helmet was SSH-36 used by Soviet forces at the beginning of World War II. This helmet has been in the ground for 75 years. This helmet I renovated to participate in military reconstructions.

I get people being upset when people do that to a good condition helmet with minor wear and tear but when it’s literal ruined garbage like these , I don’t get it, it’s not going in a museum, nobody is going to buy it like that. My only issue is if people do this and try to sell them as if they were in original condition, as long as they don’t do that then break out the welder and bondo

GREAT JOB with the restoration! :) This guy really RESTORED it :)...unfortunately, many would have just wire-brushed it a little, sprayed some clear coat on it, and called it "restored"...I'm so tired of this "patina" movement..I think it's just an excuse for laziness, not wanting to put forth the effort or expense to properly restore something...and the "fake patina" thing is just over the top...I find it especially revolting on old cars and trucks...

The hole on the top was for the helmet guard that he replaced. What most likely happened is 8t goty crushed post war in a pit dump or it was under ground and got crushed.
@bramvandeveire4560
@bramvandeveire4560 4 года назад
@@CaptainFordoArc77 I know that the holes are for the guard but those stresscracks are caused by explosion or a piece of shrapnel. That's an important part of this helmets history. And I would never restore a relic to 'new condition'. Then you basically turn it into a replica.
@CaptainFordoArc77
@CaptainFordoArc77 4 года назад
@@bramvandeveire4560 I disagree that crack was probably not from a explosion because if so the helmet would be dented its probably just a crack from the brittle steal it was made from.
@MrVolvobloke
@MrVolvobloke 4 года назад
@@bramvandeveire4560 So maybe we shouldn't restore tanks and planes (which are much rarer) from the war then? After all isn't that beautiful warbird flying past just a 'replica' ? My personal opinion is that the sticker was too "toy like" but I understood what you were going for. Instead of the harsh & dangerous chemicals you used to remove the rust(which it didn't do) Next time try using molasses. 10% molasses in any size container & the rest of the container fill with water. Now let it sit for 2 weeks. It'll come out of the water completely black. Use a toothbrush to remove the surface stain. What you are left with is complete steel without any rust.....Don't believe me?? Try it out on a rusty object first....YOU'LL BE AMAZED.

Nice job but correcting the bullet hole and the devastating damage that kill shot did to the helmet, kind of destroys the obvious history of the helmet. Even the compressed bullet on the opposite side perforation, displayed the reality of what happened to the guy who was wearing it. To me the history is much more interesting than what now looks like it came N.O.S. from a military surplus warehouse.

There are several methods which could have been employed to restore this helmet. I have two points to make; first, the techniques that were used, resulted in a helmet which is essentially ALL metal. Secondly, that is one damn nice finish, so nice, that had I not viewed this video, I would have cried "reproduction helmet, it' cannot be genuine", even though it most certainly is, and saw a very vicious part of our world's history. I wish only the best for you, and enjoy your reenactments. Stay well, remain healthy and most importantly, vital.
