L.A. stands for lift angle. It is measurement of the angle (in degrees) through which the balance rotates from the instant the impulse jewel makes contact with one horn of the pallet fork, until the instant the impulse jewel ceases to make contact with the other horn of the pallet fork. Put another way, if you draw a triangle where one point is the centre of the balance wheel staff pivot hole, another is the point where the pallet jewel first touches the pallet fork and the final point being where the impulse jewel breaks contact with the other horn of pallet fork, the angle of this triangle at the point of the balance staff pivot is the lift angle. The time grapher listens for the sounds related to these events, and if it knows the lift angle, it can use the time interval between these sounds to determine the amplitude of the balance wheel.
