I’ve been asked several times by shavers who still use cartridge razors to do a side by side shave with a modern cartridge razor vs. a hybrid DE razor. Today we will do a side by side shave with a modern Gillette Fusion 5 Power razor and the Broman.
From their website-
“The Broman razor
The Broman Razor is a patent-pending and design registered product which provides the ease of use of a modern razor with the low-cost blades and anti-clogging features of a vintage safety razor. A modern innovation on a traditional single blade, classic razor. No subscriptions. No clogging. No nonsense. Just honest, well-designed products at a fair price.”

So I have 14 razors, about 600 blades, 10 brushes, 4 shave bowls, and I'm getting a Feather AS/D2 razor. And let's not forget the 8 soaps and 4 creams. Yeah, I'm saving a lot of money. Sure I am.

I’ve gone through so many of vintage gillettes… I’ve gotten rid of most only kept my favorites… couple of DeLuxe Criterion’s, Fat Boys, a Bostonian and that’s about it. Got a couple creams, couple aftershaves/balms and one Simpson brush. Occasionally I feel the RAD kick in but I fight it!

I can't get the items on my wish list, yet. I didn't want to wait, so I visited a local beauty supply shop. I got an El cheapo DE razor, a puck of soap, a brush,, and a ten pack of Dorco blades for about twenty bucks. Just to get me by. After supper I grabbed a quick shower. hydrated the brush then tried making some lather. I lathered up. Did three passes and ended up with the closest shave that I've had since the last time I had a barber shave me with straight razor. WOW!! Imagine what it'll be like when I get a Mercury's 34C HD..... Never going back to cartidges/disposables ever....

I was using a Mach 3 and then Mach 3 turbo since about 1990, but nearly 10 years ago switched to using shaving soap and a brush instead of canned shave cream. Luckily I learned back in the 70's to shave with a D.E. razor, (first I ever shaved with) so I thought what the heck and bought a Gillette "King C. Gillette" model and went back to shaving with a D.E. razor too this year. I had forgotten how much better of a shave with a little technic concentration and time you can get with a D.E. razor. I had to forget so many bad habits I had picked up using the Mach 3 over the years, but once my early training came back to me I'm enjoying D.E. shaving with badger brush and soap puck now. It's SO much less expensive in the long run too which always helps. Merry Christmas and Happy New year to you and yours. William C. central Indiana.

So I've come to some realizations. I absolutely love shaving with my de razor collection. I get an absolute joy collecting vintage gillettes, and the challenge of technique using de razors. However, cartridge razors do give good shaves and when in a rush there's absolutely nothing like em.

Thanks for another great video Ken, you know I have to say de shaving is definitely alot cheaper than the cartridge razors, but with that said, everyone here knows that after de shaving, you can't have just one razor, it takes no time before you are a collector of vintage gillette razors, but a great hobby, there is definitely alot worse things we could be spending our money on. And to the gentleman who can only use cartridge razors due to skin issues or whatever it may be, I am a proud de shaver, but it seems that brushes and soaps break me out due to sensitive skin, so I use warm water, a vintage gillette tech de razor, barbasol sensitive skin shaving cream, and splash with cold water, then witch hazel, that routine has given me the best results. Anyways I've ran my mouth enough, great video Ken!!

Actually that's a great point - those lube strips are so gimicky! I wish they'd leave them off altogether. I think a big reason they are there is to encourage us to replace the cartridge when they wear out. 🤣

Like the comparison videos. Usually I use a DE razor. But, occasionally I'll be pressed for time and need to do a quick one pass with a cartridge. Generally it's a Harry's razor. I originally got them because of the convenience. They are not bad for occassional use. Happy Holidays!

I have a Bromam and while I like that I can use DE blades in it the razor is so mild I have to do six passes to get a shave as good as any of my DE razors with only two or three passes. For head or body hair I think the Broman works just fine (ladies would like it) but for face shaving the milder DE razors do a better job. Great video, stay safe.

Great shave and comparison. I’ve been wet shaving for a year and a half now. I used cartridges and electric shavers before that. I’ve been loving using DE razors ever since switching to them, and it’s been quite enjoyable getting into wet shaving. I’ve helped one friend convert to that way of shaving, and I’m hoping to get more of my friends into safety razors. It would take some explaining to do to my friends about what wet shaving is and how safety razors work, but I hope they’ll love that way of shaving when they do get into it. Have a good one!

I had been using the Gillette Fusion Power razor for years but the prohibitively high cost of replacement cartridges drove me to transition over to DE razors and I do find shaving with them to be much more enjoyable than the Fusion razor. I still have the Fusion and use it once and awhile if I'm in a big hurry but only use it in the shower the single blade opposite the five blades works real good under the nose. I have since found that I can get replacement cartridges from Sam's Club for about 2 bucks apiece but I still prefer the experience of using a DE razor. As always I really enjoy your videos.

I shaved with cartride razors before, between shaving with an electric razor and a DE. I tried the Fusion 5 first. And the Mach 3. (I liked the Mach 3 more). Then I found an antique DE on an antique marker and started reading about them. To my huge surprise not only was it still possible to buy blades for an almost century old razor, but they even made new one. 4 years later I'm collecting vintage safety razors (DE and SE). And shave with a modern one. A Feather AS-D2.

Very cool Ken. I am one of the few that can't use a DE blade due to skin issues. No matter what DE razor I use, my neck breaks out really bad to the point where I can't shave and I have 40 different DE razors and several straight razors. I use the power version of the Gillette Skinguard which I get a lot of shaves from and they are not very expensive either compared to the regular Proshield version. I also use Barbasol's 1919 latherless shave cream as a preshave which has been a huge help. I did have some success with just using one half DE blade in the center slot with the leaf. But my beard is so tough that I burn right through DE blades.

I like using my vintage gillettes from time to time, but I have to admit the mach 3 has been and probably always will be my go to razor. Quick, close, comfortable in all directions. I think gillette hit the nail on the head with the sensor and the mach 3. After that it was more gimmicks and marketing which honestly you saw starting with the mach 3.

Great to see a Cart comparison shave, although from my understanding the Broman is out of production. I did use a disposable (3-blade) last week for the first time in 2 years together with my Traditional Wet shaving methods and was not too surprised the results were quite good, that been said there is a big cost difference compared to DE blades and also there is throw away plastic to worry about, at least in Australia the carts/disposables can be recycled through a special recycle program put together by Gillette and Terracycle. Is there a cart/disposable razor recycle program in the US?

I used to think that too, but these days I'm getting excellent results with a DE. One important thing that took me too long to learn is to only use sharp blades - I used to "push" blades too far. I definitely agree that a good cartridge is easier & quicker though. One reason I have been determined to make the DE work is that I often shave in my car, and I love being able to remove the blade to clean it. P.S like Ken, my favourite cartridge was the Sensor Excel too! Excellent razor

@gregsullivan7408
@gregsullivan7408 8 месяцев назад
@@bobjones8321 You're welcome Bob. Regarding your question - I think our host here is far better qualified to answer that, but I'll have a crack: my gut feel is that a mild razor, but with a "normal" blade (not mild), might be a good way to start. A razor I've only just recently purchased is able to go SUPER mild if you need it to - the Rockwell 6C, which has interchangeable plates (there is also the more expensive 6S). I'm using Astra SP blades, which I believe are reasonably sharp, but definitely not as sharp as the Feather. (not sure whether they qualify as "normal" or not 🤣). Use a VERY light touch, preferring multiple strokes to gradually wear down the bristles. (taking care to keep the area sufficiently lubricated). I've had a tug of war between DEs & cartridges over the years. I've come to accept that cartridges are very good, but I like the (potential) cost savings with DEs, and despite the slightly longer time it takes to do a shave with a DE, I enjoy the process more - using very little pressure, and being able to so easily clean the blade (especially when mobile).

For me I will not switch back to any cart. Not because they are bad I just prefer the DE at this point. But that first year for me was rough. I had to buy all the razors, soaps, brushes and blades. I finally found my preferred razor which is the Rockwell 6S on 4 or 5 with a feather blade. Now that I found the razor that I prefer I can enjoy that cost savings because in the beginning it was way more expensive than buying cartridges for my Gilette Fusion. For my head I use either the Leaf Twig or a Braun Series 9 as this electric razor gets really close and almost none to no stubble whatsoever after I shave my head. Great vid as always Ken. Although I now use a DE The Mach 3 was and still is the best cartridge razor.

The thing I don't like is the weak spring. In fact I'd prefer it if it was completely rigid.

Ken, some people such as myself cannot use a safety razor due to extremely stiff whiskers and very sensitive skin. Believe me I would love to use one but just doesn't work for me.

Ken💈💈 Gotta give it to you for giving this shave a go, brave man. Cartridges are an abomination really, face it, the contamination is bad enough. Razors that take a snapped in half DE blade I have no trouble with, at least the theory of saving is there if not a decent shave.. Wish more people would go the wet shaving route, with restraint you can have better shaves, save money, feel and look better, just saying. Great shave and video, thanks. Enjoy !

the problem with your skin ken is not only that it is always very dry, it is also always very red, stop using after shaves with alcohol and having so incredible burns and use better after balm ,and start using sun burn oils , recomendations from my brother in law who is dermatologist

Nice comparison shave. Once again there is no comparison when you compare the cost of blades for cartridges versus DEs and SEs. It's all that other stuff wet shavers go down the rabbit hole to buy. Believe it or not, Barbasol shaving cream in a can still works for $1.50 compared to the artisan soaps for $15-$25. But who can resist all those great fragrances?

I really liked the Gillette Sensor excel too. Used it for years, then the Mach 3 came out and Gillette just went overboard with all the stupid gimmicks, and the pricing for cartridges got to be ridiculous. So I switched. Never looked back.

PS - I can use the DE on my head but takes a lot of practice! I can do it without a mirror, but it was about 25 shaves and got it down.

Hello Ken! Warm regards from Sweden. Few weeks back I wanted to learn how to shave with a safety razor and I found your videos. They helped a lot. For fun I started to watch more of your videos. Very entertaining! But I must ask: what do you get out of hoarding all them razors, new and antiques, brushes, soaps and all that? I understand having some signed posters. But razors? Especially since they are so expensive, and no real second hand value. And if I understand, your son will just sell them off cheaply when he inherits your collection. (Since he is into Mach 3, hehe) Anyway, I started out owning an Progres... and after watching one of your videos I just bought a Feather AS D2... thanks a lot Ken :D

Uh-oh; you're at two. That's how it starts... I had one for the first four months and for the first while I thought that would do. Then I thought "Maybe I should try another one; see how they compare." After a few new razors, I thought "How do these compare to the vintage Gillettes?" I'm at 24 razors so far... The soap collection is even bigger. Ditto blade types. I've kept the splashes, balms and brushes at comparatively low numbers (so far)...

Keep the shirt white! I mean.. Clean 🤣🤣🤣🤣 On a serious note, Ken. Gillette has done several studies on how many strokes it takes to knock off the facial hair to achieve a quality of BBS shave. According to Gillette, the lesser strokes the better. It seems like the broman razor takes more strokes than the Gillette razor. Got to stick with DE's
