I bought my 3-speed standard Brompton in 2017 and my 6-speed electric in March this year. I would definitely recommend a 6- overea 3-speed - not for the "extra" speeds but for the wider gear ratio on the internal hub. You get a lower 1st gear for hills and a higher 3rd gear for cruising (ignoring the derailleur shift}.
Very helpful explanation of the new name changes. I bought a S6l last summer and it is the love of my life. I've flown with it and take it pretty much everywhere. Grocery shopping is a blast, as I use the folded bike as my shopping cart.
I was really looking for brompton before pandemic hit us , now after 3year wfh brompton now is just a desire piece of art there I can't have reason to afford
Very helpful and clear video. You're mix of imperial and metric measurements brought a smile to my face. (You were obviously trying to accommodate your neighbours😁. It really is time the USA started using the metric system.)
It makes me chuckle that the US still uses the "Imperial" system. I thought they had freed themselves from that in 1776! ;-) (Though must confess that I lived in the US for almost 20 years and now back in the UK, I still stick with feet and inches).
The extended seat post is a poor compromise. It sticks out further and while you can remove it for travel/storage, it means the frame is no longer locked in the folded position. Also, to remove it you have to detach the saddle, which needs a tool. The telescopic seat post may weigh a little more but the top section with the saddle slides out very easily while leaving the rest of the post inside the frame. This is the smallest possible configuration for storage/stowage.
These are great bikes but they aren’t cheap -i think its super important to do some test driving (at a shop or if you can try a friends bike ) so you can actually get a good feel for the bike and have confidence in your purchase
I think the price is expensive and the bag, tools, air pump, lighting and rack should be included in the price. Thanks for the video and take care all of you guys.
Hi Sahil. Nice to finally put a face to your name. We're enjoying our Bromptons here in Vancouver that we purchased from your shop this past May. Just want to take this opportunity to thank you and the team for providing me with awesome service for this online purchase and shipping to Vancouver. Absolutely flawless experience. You'd mentioned about the wider gear ratios on the 2022 line. What are the teeth count on the rear cogs to achieve this and are they available for sale through your online store?
We are so happy you are enjoying your Bromptons! If you purchased the 6 speed, you already have the wider range on the internal hub! Brompton 6 speed comes with a special internal gear hub where 1 and 3rd gear are wider than the standard 3 speed model so it is not about teeth count on the cog.
@@CurbsideCycle I'm a bit confused about this too. For previous year models I'd read that getting a 44t chainraing instead of the standard 50t on the 6-speed would make it even better for hill climbing. Did changes to the 2022 make this unnecessary?
@@sweatnosweat I've got the bike, but I've not had a chance to ride it yet as we've had very low temps and icy roads, so I decided to err on the side of caution. Soon though, I'll be taking it out and am really looking forward to it.
To be more easily seen by car drivers who are NOT as observant as they should be, wear light colours - White, Yellow, or Light Orange - and choose a light colour for the bike frame and your helmet or hat. Even a white or yellow baseball cap helps.
I have a 2015 in Lime Green 3 speed that I converted to a Black Edition so its a one off with a rack, I also just picked up a used H6L Electric in Flame Lacquer, man that is one hell of a colour and it only had 280 miles on the clock and was 6 months old. I bought the girlfriend the Orange Black Edition 2 speed a few years ago and she loves it.
I managed to get a hold of a Brompton during the pandemic - it was a pandemic miracle! The only thing I wish is that it had an H handlebar. At 5'2", the H bar would give a more upright position, which would be more comfortable for the long distances I cycle. The M handlebar works just fine though. Though I live in the US, Curbside Cycle has been able to ship me all the happy little Brompton things I need. Thanks so much, guys!
My Lightweight, Flame Painted Yellow, and more attractive, it seems, Black Version, 6 gear bike had a long 600 mm seat post as standard, at least here in Scandinavia, as I wasn't given any choice, when I bought my by then finished bike in my local Brompton shop, during the Covid19 closure. I have bought a black telescope post also + a new black, titanium post with an integral ring in top, for the saddle. I have a carbon H + a Sport handlebar for it, to see what will fit me the best, as a 184 cm, heavy man. I have bought titanium bolts, some hollow and new set carbon brackets for my mudguards titanium struts, plus a ceramic titanium crank! I use it for vacation, in a German B&W box, plus local use, when I am to deliver my car to service. I have vacated on our very hilly and rocky Island of Bornholm and I was fond of all 6 gears, and still had to walk, once in a while, going up hill on a serpentine road ;-)
As a test, and being able to put it into my black German B&W transport box without having to removing anything as a first, I have bougth a 535 mm, standard length titanium seat post (About the same price, from China, as an original post!). I just pull it out in full (No insert), and it is still a little too low for my 184 cm! And when riding, my too heavy 100 kilo weight punches it a little down in its tube. But it is acceptable for being able to to just bring it. I also own an original telescope post also, but it is indeed very "Heavy", so I prefer not to use it! 🤔 Finn. Denmark
I'm riding on my 2nd Brompton. Love the bike. I can take it anywhere I travel in the world. This marketing video putting everything into "nifty" categories is a bit of a turnoff for me. I just want to walk into the store, or go to an online source and put my Brompton together whatever the marketing folks happen to call it.
Hey Stephen, this is what the marketing folks at Brompton happen to call it now and made these categories themselves for the 2022 season and on. We put this video together to aide our online shoppers through the purchasing process the way Brompton wants us to. We wish it remained the how it was but this was beyond us.
I’m also wondering about air travel. I know the bike won’t fit on a regional jet, and even on bigger jets (with bigger overheads), I’m worried that the flight crew won’t let me carry it on, and I’d be stuck checking it without adequate protection. The same goes for international flights - are those flights problematic?
“You can’t take batteries on a passenger plane with you”, is true of some lithium ion batteries, but not all. LiGo makes a battery system for e-bikes which is designed to be allowed on airplanes.
Any experiences with the P model? I'm trying to decide between the P and C. It's a lot lighter with higher-end components but I'm not sure if the price difference is justified. I'd appreciate some thoughts on the difference.
We did not get a great allocation for this year HOWEVER the few that we did receive and sell are remarkably lighter and for those that need to carry it into places frequently, it may be the best. If the bike is going to remain mostly on two wheels, few stair climbing and trips off of ground level, a standard Brompton will do just fine.
Hey Sahil! I was planning last year to buy the H6L model. I was now looking for it when I realised they have made changes. May I ask you, Is the new C model with the e H handlebar the same as the old H6L? I think ride’s position of the old H model was slightly higher, not just because of the H handlebar but of a physical extra bit on the bar. Do i remember wrong? Thanks! Great vid tho!
I haven't followed Brompton in years. This is much better marketing that they dropped the letters and numbers system like M6R. Did they drop the P-type handlebars? I always wanted a bike with those.
Hi i have a question about the a line. It comes with a internal gear hub, is it possible to switch it after some years for chain gears? or do i have to stick to internal gears=? nice video keep it on :)
If you think you might upgrade to get the extra two chain gears we would recommend springing for the C Line explore. Upgrades such as that, while do-able, can get quite pricey with labor costs.
Going long distances may have been improper for us to say. In actuality it may have been better to put it as longer than normal commutes to work etc with less effort. We would agree that this is not a bike to do long rides or tours on due to its battery range.
Check out #Chrisbybike. She lives in Rio and rides Brompton everywhere. She goes over this specific problem because she blew a tube coming down the mountain from Christ the Redeemer. I understand it's the only issue she's ever had and for most of us, we're not going to be coming down a mountain riding our breaks creating massive amounts of friction Heat to blow a tube 😆 to solve this issue she actually lets a little air out of her tires before she goes down the hill and then pumps them back up when she gets on level. Hope this helps
@@AS-xo3lk you are very welcome. She is a great resource for answering questions especially for people who are new to cycling... and the way she rides and everywhere she goes, it was really confidence instilling in the bike's long term functionality and reliability.
At face value, ya most if not all state that you can not bring a battery with you. But it wouldn't hurt to contact the air carrier, maybe they can make an exception. Never know if ya don't ask.
@@paulwoo804 Oh dear. I was just letting you know that it was unlikely to come out for the C line at the moment. I can clearly read and knew what you were wishing for!
All steel bikes can be used in the winter :) The trick is to keep it clean and well maintained. We recommend wiping down the bike after a wet/snowy day.
Hi may i ask other than colors and cosmetic differences, are there any real material differences between the 2020 editions vs the new 2022 editions? Assuming i compare a M6R vs a C Line Explore Mid height with Rack?
Hello I ordered a C line from a local Brompton dealer here in Calgary last August and up till now i have not received any updates about the bike . How long does it take usually to order a Brompton customized bike ?
Better to ask that bike shop as they may do something different from us. We are very transparent about when you will receive a bike. Currently if a client would place an order, they will see their bike in July 2022. So that shop may have ordered the soonest available build slot which could very be as late as July.
Battery of e-Brompton is more than 160Wh, than battery is not accessible to the airplane. If you have another info, please let me know. I do not know, how to buy e-version and take it to my country.
Mix of imperial and metric measures ....not too helpful tbh, especially since I am one of those tall people...would have been awesome to hear a bit more about technical details like engine and so on. Nonetheless some helpful facts I could wrap my head around here :).
Thank you - very instructive! UPDATE (Feb 2022) Bought my first Brompton: a mid handlebar C line Black Edition Explore! For long I hesitated getting the Picadilly blue one (who doesn't love blue?!) but decided to tone it down, T_T. Nonetheless, I am excited about riding this petit bijou in Cambridge and Surrey Hills! Again thank you @CurbsideCycle for your detailed videos - much appreciated.
Hey Owen! That would now be called a C Line Explore Mid Bar with Mudguards or C Line Explore Mid bar with Rack and Fenders. But all C Line Bromptons are now standard equipped with fenders.
@@CurbsideCycle thanks! I must say that a Brompton is long on my wish list and B75 (now A) is the most tempting due to the price. I don’t like the old shifters though. What is good about both the B75 and A is that the colors on them are great.
At the time of filming and release, the titanium model now known as P Line, was not publicly released until today. Unfortunately not being sold in Canada. Hopefully next year!
You have to put market prices as they are right now a High quality bicycle in the international market is at most £500 so a Brompton for £1400 does not make sense and also you have to add the extras of fenders, luggage rack and their bags, headlights and rear, tools etc. Please, I think its price is excessive. Thanks for the video and take care of you all guys.
I've been riding this bike for about a month ru-vid.comUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
I'm hesitating between Engwe 750W and Freego 1000 which are the same price, what do you recommend? Link for Freego 1000W on Amazon: amzn.to/3EMaxGj Link for ENGWE 750W on Amazon: amzn.to/34i13X1
