I'm only about 5 years older than Brooke, and back when Pretty Baby was happening, even I knew it was wrong. Don't be fooled into thinking there was no backlash. Still a kid myself, I distinctly remember the uproar over presenting a child in such a sexualized way. While I found it disgusting, sadly, it only seemed to serve as box office fodder. Meanwhile, every adult involved in the film repeatedly defended it, including Brooke's own mother. Clearly, they were only motivated by greed, fame, or something darker. Brooke at the time was too young and too innocent to realize the very serious connotations of being presented in such a sexualized manner, not just for herself, but for all children. She was a sweet kid who wanted to please her mother and every adult in the room. She was focused on being professional and trying her best to do a good job, and she approached the role that way. I remember that in interviews she herself innocently protested the backlash and defended her role. The whole thing is just plain sad. I can understand the industry misusing her because their motivation was either greed or something far sinister, but I can't get past the mother going along with it. Brooke was an incredibly sweet and beautiful child, who should have been treated like the child she was, regardless of her breathtaking looks. I always used to believe that perhaps her mother was motivated by survival since she was a single mom. I was quite astonished to find out decades later, that Brooke's dad was still in her life after her parents' divorce, that he was actually quite wealthy, and that he did indeed provide financial support for Brooke. Therefore, what possible excuse could the mother have had? It appears the mom herself was also seeking financial reward and that she was a stage mother seeking fame. It's miraculous that this girl turned into such an amazing woman. As for director Louie Malle, I have to ask myself if Candace Bergen would have ever let their own daughter Chloe play that role. Or Susan Sarandon ever let her young daughter play the role? I'm gonna assume the answer would be a giant "NO".

It's such an important topic to get out because it was unconscionable what the business and her mother allowed to be done to her at far too young an age. It's amazing she has grown into the woman she is today and now has the courage along with the vulnerability to be able to tell her story. Because just maybe, it will help others out there who are tempted to fall into the abyss of pushing their kid into something they are nowhere near ready for.

@@manofiske3318 what she did was a real job. Being in the entertainment business can either be a horror show or it can be rewarding in many ways. But when you are a child and pushed into it as she was THAT is ABUSE. And ANY abuse in any form is trauma that affects every aspect of a person's life. Celebrities are human beings with feelings and faults just like anyone else in the world, they are just known. If they choose to share their stories to help others then I think that is a very courageous thing to do. Because they don't HAVE to. She also has spoken in the past about suffering from postpartum depression after the birth of her child and was vilified for doing it which was very unfair.

She talks about how her mother always wanted to be "fabulous," and clearly she was willing to exploit her daughter to get there. Yet Brooke blames evil men and the public for her sexualization. She even talked about how her mother let a man take nude photos of her when she was 9! What mother does that?! She was sick enough to let her daughter walk around nude in front of cameras and pose provocatively, yet Brooke doesn't say ANYTHING about how horrible her mother actually was. I'm confused. Stop blaming society and men, stop say that women are all innocent, because this shows actually how evil women CAN be.

Using the name "Pretty Baby" for the documentary still feels very exploitive of Brook e Shields as a child. Brooke Shields seems as if she is more wanting validation for her acting talent back then and recognition of how good the films were by making the comment that the focus was always on the exploitation of her instead of her talent and the quality of a movie. This make me feel she needs more inner work and healing around what happened to her. I'm wondering if her youngest daughter is sensing this, too. I watched the movie "Pretty Baby" many times when I was a child, remembering many of the lines. But I wasn't allowed to watch any other movies that had "normal" sexual content. Why?..because my dad was a pedophile and this was the perfect movie for him. It normalized this type of relationship in the movie, even making you feel badly for the couple (the child and the adult man) at the very end when they are separated. It was literally portrayed as a love story. So why use the name "Pretty Baby" for the documentary?

First of all, I'm so very sorry for the childhood you experienced. I wish you continued healing.

The title fits to tell her side of the narrative. That movie shot her into the spotlight and was the beginning of several controversial / innapropriate roles as a child. She was treated/ exploited like a "pretty baby".. The title is very fitting for a documentary talking about that experience.

I watched this in one sitting. Oh my God! All those adults that took advantage of her beauty and talent as a little girl, that those adults were trying to normalize children in s-xually suggestive parts! Her Mom was seriously messed up traipsing her daughter all around Hollywood putting her in those roles!!! Ugh. It makes me very nauseated. Poor Brooke having to go through all of that so young. Terri Shields was truly vile. 🤬It was sadly such a codependent relationship. 😓

Brooke said she lost respect "For" the industry, not "In" the industry. Poorly framed question from Juju!

Pretty Baby was a dangerous film no matter how artfuly done. Putting a light on sex with children in a way that could be seen as appealing is just reakless and I am sure hurt children somewhere because of it.

So, she's written two best selling books about her experience as a child actor, but still feeling the need to revisit this? Unfinished business is simply finished, but perhaps not for a celebrity who can capitalize on it. But she may only know the business and perhaps this is where most child actors failed.
