Thank you Jackie! I will say, I feel this is a bigger problem that falls more on the companies/brands and not necessarily the influencers. For small content creators, most don't have big budgets to spend on products and materials and tend to rely more on getting free products to use. The thing I'd like to see happen is for companies to take a more "hands off" approach and send out products without the strings attached or fear of being blacklisted if you have genuine criticism of the products. These sewing + crafting brands need to realize that authentic content is best for everyone.

Jen, I totally understand where you are coming from. As a consumer, I prefer honest opinions about a product whether it comes from the company/brand or the influencer. Honesty should be the best policy on both sides, but we know that’s not always the case. Thank you for your reply. I love your content and your integrity. Thanks for your reply.

Your honest content gets more views than their "marketing" videos! You Go Girl! I don't hate Brother, i had a PRW sew/emb 20 yrs ago, I outgrew it and buy better machines now cause i can afford it. Well, you can always donate the machine - you'll get the purchase write off AND the donation write off. 😂 Can't wait to see how many ppl return these to Joann after the holidays! Poor Joann's.... 😢

I have 2 conventional Brother embroidery machines, and they are fantastic. I have no need for this machine when I have the other two with much more friendly functions for the user. One of my machines has wifi so I can already use the free Artspira if I want (and I have). The main thing that does intrigue me about Skitch is the free arm capability. If Brother were to produce a small format free arm embroidery with conventional interface, I'd be interested in that.

Thank you for your honest reviews. I only found you recently and thought the Skitch sounded like an awesome affordable machine with a free arm feature. Apparently Brother didn’t do their “homework “ on realistic consumer wants and needs. USB port is a definite need, and also as you said , access to more free or minimal cost designs. Will continue to follow your channel & thank you again. ❤

It's really important to keep instilling that being critical and transparent with reviewing a product is not a 'bad' thing that companies should be afraid of. If a company is creating a product that they believe is the best-effort they could bring to market for the consumer then there should be no reason to fear or push back on neutral-toned honest opinions and analysis. You did a good job in measuring that balance and walking that tight rope of communicating your concerns without being negative for negative sake. This is what brother needed to hear to keep them on-track with their customer-base. They did not need head pats for a product that could be much better and could serve their target audience much better. Thank you for staying strong and professional under whatever pressure might have been going on around this.

I'm glad that Brother came around and really listened to consumers. Listening to obvious and real problems consumers are having with products and then actually doing something about them is key to what will keep a company in business for a long time. I have a couple of Brother sewing machines and have had to use their customer service before and found that they really do back up their products and want to resolve your issues. 👍

I was put off when Brother starting charging huge prices for minor upgrades to Canvas. So I jumped ship to Silhouette, with its one off very reasonable price for their Business edition software. What they have put out here with the App to use Machine is NOT going to get my money either. They messed up with the original Scan n Cut having to use a usb to transfer designs and they have done it again. Brother seems to have a need to control its users, when other companies are doing everything they can to empower their users to make the most of their equipment. Brother, do better!

I’m glad they changed their minds but it’s still a hard no for me. They are going to want that subscription money and will be pushing Skitch owners to subscribe by rolling any new features into Artspira’s paid version. It’s Cricut all over again. You shouldn’t need an app to make your machine work.

BMW tried to make things like heated seats a subscription based feature and consumers fought back. If we don't speak up, all these companies are going to try subscription based charging and the products we already paid for will become useless if we don't continue paying. Consumers have to speak up (and speak with their wallets) and not buy products like these that require paying an ongoing fee. Thank you for speaking up against this Brother machine nonsense! I'm looking to buy my first embroidery machine and I'm considering a Brother model (not this one of course) but this makes me want to reconsider the brand entirely!

Thank you for the info. No, this doesn't change my mind about purchasing the Skitch. It has 2 strikes against it for how I embroider. First, It's only a 4x4 machine and that is too limiting for my typical projects and second, I do not want to be forced to use a phone app to use it even if it's free. I love my other Brother machines and I'll stick with them.

Brother should have had included a usb port or a way to access the built in storage trough the bluetooth or wifi connection as an alternative for the app. Big companys tend to discontinue online services and disable products that depend on those services.
@sherrieventuri5124
@sherrieventuri5124 8 месяцев назад
They could modify the app to allow you to send via bluetooth directly to the machine without having to be connected to their cloud. Also what happens if you purchase the machine and at some point they stop support on the app and it becomes a security risk or just no longer functions. I have a singer XL 5000 and the app that came with it does not work in the current version of Windows but I can still get designs to the machine because it's not locked down like this machine. There are other issues with technology aging but that's a whole other discussion. It becomes a security risk in a sense because they have to keep up with any security releases and make sure that it's not hackable, whereas if connectivity could be done directly from the computer to the machine either via a cable or Bluetooth and not require internet connectivity it could reduce that risk.

Good for you, girl🎉. But Brother has show their hands. This is the business model on their future planning, and the worst part is they think people is so stupid, who buy the expensive machine then pay the highest subscription app so they can use the machine for the design they already have. They put the shit app out to said you don’t need to pay for it. Next month can upload 20 designs on the free app, so people may buy it for the holiday. Can they change back on 2024 of course yes. Without an USB port this is a no buy item. I have Brother sewing & embroider machine since 2015 and I love it, also I’m a Apple fan but at that time, in the manual said only able to use in PC. I have to find out myself because no one talk about that. Luckily they have an USB port. Brother are so stupid they don’t even know how to market their products. I think because sewing machine is a small percentage in their business, so they don’t care. But now the business is tough, they looking for more income monthly instead of just selling the machine. Sadly they just too greedy. For me once you learn the true is very hard to turn around.

Glad they made the changes. However it's still a ball and chain business model like Cricut. Next question is, how long will they leave it this way before back peddling and going back to a fee based app? Only a fool would pay for that apps designs. Babyish is putting it nicely. *edit* makes me wary of what they plan on doing with their sewing machines next. I promise you I will not use an app to use one. We have two Brothers in our house. So I'm not anti Brother. But not real happy with them.

I was surprised that Brother went down the subscription route as they surely must have watched the car crash that was Cricut after their subscription announcement. I had literally had mine a week and took it back and I know I wasn't the only one! But Brother do listen to their customers as well as being ahead of the curve on the technology. I can see the benefits of having a machine that is light on internal gadgets and driven by an app. In the early days there were some machines that had to have a wired link to your computer to drive the embroidery unit so it is kind of a blast from the past brought bang up to date. I can see how you could take this new machine out with you to craft fairs and do embroidery live without needing a truck for your multi needle machine or your Luminaire or whatever. It looks compact and I imagine it isn't outrageously heavy. Plus being able to access designs on the hoof from an app on your phone instead of carting your laptop around with you as well seems genius! Love your work and your honesty!

@WARPAINTandUnicorns
@WARPAINTandUnicorns 8 месяцев назад
This makes it usable for everyone now. Honestly, you don't need to store a lot of files online so 20 seems perfectly fine as a LOAD limit of stored files. I understand that (and I would have been fine if Cricut wanted to save on stored files online as well to 20... not 20 files run limit on the machine). You just need to be able to USE the tool as a base reason for buying a tool. Cloud apps are the future which is both sad but since they are we need to make the tools usable at the consumer model... they could brick them sure, but this is an 'affordable' starter machine you will sacrifice some of the right-to-repair freedom they using to make an affordable option in the future. The higher level of machines should have full right to repair because it is the full cost of the tools. Also with most crafters the Cricut catalogue is VERY extensive. As a designer/artist, I know how to make my own files and that's why I chose the Cricut Maker for ALL the materials you can cut with the machine even more materials than they did not test in their presets, so I'm not your average crafter but I am your average cosplay maker that was promoting this machine for cosplayers. 😉Also if I remember correctly the paid version allows you to to sell svgs files as part which increases the catalogue of files... 🤔 I have to look into that again. But sites like Spoonflower thrived but selling creators content on their print service. Also feels weird having to label myself as a cosplay maker now when 20 to 10 years you HAD to make your cosplays as a cosplayer.... there weren't options for "cheap" store/china-bought ones to just buy and wear. Jen, I would pin this video to the other first impressions as it is a HUGE update to the viability of the machine.

I think the problem I have is what's to stop them from changing it after a few months when they've sold enough units that they feel that they can get away with it. The simple fact that they made the foolish decision to do that upon release and then had to backpedal doesn't give me a lot of comfort that they wouldn't try it in the future. I have the same problem with Cricut but I already have machine but if it needs replaced I'll consider others. Also if you read the comments, there are a few people that considered purchasing it so that they could customize items to sell at markets and craft fairs, the problem is if you're inside a building sometimes it's difficult to get internet connectivity and this machine still needs connectivity to the cloud to do anything. Why the owner can't send directly to the machine from the computer is extremely limiting. If you read the comments on their Facebook post you'll see them not giving an accurate answer about how connectivity works. That certainly doesn't make me feel comforted if they can't say the truth about how it works, to me that says a lot about their business practices.

what this episode with Brother and the cricut debacle have taught me is that neither of them had actual crafters in the room when they made business decisions. Any average crafter out there could have told them these glaring issues before they launched. It also tells me that they didn't do any research with test groups or surveying customers. the lack of care regarding their customers that spend hundreds of dollars with their company is such a huge turn off. The moment cricut announced their limit, i bought a silhouette and gave away my cricut. i own a brother that is so old, bluetooth didn't exist. i'll probably never buy a sewing/embroidery machine that REQUIRES internet and/or a subscription.

It's good they're listening, but I'm gonna repeat what I commented before... if they can lock the machine behind the app now... they can still do it again in future, maybe in 3-4 years when sales get rough lol. No thank you.

My worry would be just when they decide to quit supporting it, thus making the machine obsolete - not because it doesn't run but because the app no longer functions because Brother couldn't be bothered.

I like the new machine but don’t want to be tied down to their app. I like the freedom of having a usb port and using my own designs. I wonder why they did add a usb port to the machine? Then we would have choices. They will not see until they take the machine out of app jail.

I agree that $12.99 a month is just too high. The designs are so cartoonish and childish, besides really limited for that high of a price.

I have the Skitch siting as a glorified Boat Anchor DOING NOTHING. I paid for this machine which will not allow me to embroider my own design. I have already PAID you for the product. Brother HATE HUMAN CREATION.
