As an Asian guy born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, this era of music i didn't grow up under. But...... Going to a school that was 80% black, you make friends. You get invited to parties. You get exposed to black music. Young kids would be outside dancing to rap and hip hop but the older generation would be inside playing soul, blues, funk, and jazz. I gravitated more to the older generations music, i don't know why but because of people like Willie Hutch, Curtis Mayfield and Bobby Womack, i became a bass and rhythm guitar player. I love every minute of it.

Willie was an overlooked artist. Coming in the Curtis Mayfield tradition, he combined social consciousness with great rhythm and blues stylings and cool orchestrations...

What fascinates me about Soul Train's first decade is how social dancing is changing. In the first years we see the beginning of free form dancing that moves away from structured partnering and doing a specific dance for a song like "The Mashed Potato." However, here for instance, we're still in an era where dancing is good, clean fun. Dancing becomes more an expression of individual sexuality as the 70's progress, and by the end of the disco era dance is highly individualized and completely sexualized. In one of the very first episodes, Don Cornelius is interviewing a couple who lists all of the dances they've learned over the years. When Cornelius asks if they can do all of those dances, the young man says, "Exercise." The first decade of Soul Train marks this transition from the wholesome, recreational dance tradition which began with Irene and Vernon Castle and the dance halls that dotted the United States in the early 20th century as a result of the dance craze they started in the 1910's. Disco itself is the last gasp of structured, partnered dancing: Do the Hustle!

The sounds heavier & funkier than all his other albums, with a spirit that matches the spirit of the movie The Mack, which this track comes from, this 1973 album from the Blaxploitation movie is simply brilliant, if you loved Superfly then you'd dig this album
