I wrote a fan letter to Brother Theodore back in 80s . He wrote me giving me his home phone number and offer of free tickets to his show(I believe it was 13th St Theater) if I ever got out to NYC. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised but unfortunately never got out there. Thank you for this amazing compilation Don!

I ran into him on the subway in c. 1986/87. He was getting out on W. 72nd St. I told him simply that I enjoyed his talent. He smiled and responded with a very gracious “Thank you.” A far cry from his stage persona.

100% Dave wasn't afraid to try anything. Dave wasn't afraid to look stupid. Dave wasn't interested in being deferential to "stars" and the crap they were promoting. Dave wasn't afraid of breaking all the rules of what a television talk show should be. As a 12 year old kid in 1982, this was as close to rebellion, as close to real-life "smart assery", as close to "killing the idols" as I was gonna see on the 4 channels available at the time.

I had a very troubled friend in college. This was back in 1972. Barry struck up a friendship with Brother Theodore after a performance on campus. As Barry described it, they were very close. I imagine Barry may have shared his demons and BT listened. He spoke so highly of this man. Unfortunately, the relationship didn't help. Barry threw himself out his apartment window a year later.

I too saw Theodore twice at the 13st theatre in the west village.MILK! I also saw Dave’s show live about a half dozen times. The show was amazing to the high school me, who would stay up weeknights past 1 am to see truly original and risky and bizarre television like this. Theodore, Harvey Pekar, Howard Stern, Marv Albert, and other guys who would not be seen on a network talk show at that point in their careers. Oh, and Andy Kaufman. Just nuts.

I mentioned this in another comment thread: I met him once on the subway (#1 IRT) as he was exiting at W. 72nd St. I said to him as I said to every other “famous” person I’d encounter, just something to acknowledge them without bothering or pestering them, since they’d be off-duty and simply living their lives: “I enjoy your talent.” He smiled and graciously replied, “Thank you.” Wholly out of character of his “on-duty” persona. Then got off the subway.

Brother Theodore and Larry “Bud” Melman were the best of David Letterman’s featured performers. The beloved quirkiness of Dave’s humor was a perfect platform for those two regularly featured members of the Late Night show family. It’s a tribute to Letterman’s brilliance and kindheartedness for him to have the foresight to give these two men a chance to become iconic successful parts of our culture in the later years of their lives. I don’t think any other TV host would be so daring to make Theodore and Larry Bud an ongoing part of the show.

Thank you Don so much for your compilation. I'm actually glad I first heard of him via the Merv Griffin Jerry Lewis clip. I reacted, I'm certain, very much as the 1960's audience did. WTF? Right? It was a waste, I feel, and a mistake, to bring him on with Jerry Lewis, who did not give him the spot light he deserved. Once I realized his comic genius, I sought your compilation out, and I now have a soft spot in my heart for him, especially considering his traumatic and heroic past. Thank you sir.

This is amazing!!! I remember seeing him on the show and eventually saw him live on stage in NYC in the early 90's. Back then, the show was really a fringe cult item and Dave had many offbeat, odd guests before going to CBS and then everything changed.
