To be able to just step in, learn all of that choreography and singing and lines in such a short period of time is absolutely phenomenal. Most actors have several months to learn their roles and get comfortable(out of town tryouts etc.) but Darren had very little time. I think he is an amazing talent though obviously Glee is an excellent training ground for having to learn things quickly.
James scanlan I think that’s actually pretty standard practice on Broadway. If I remember correctly, John Stamos said he only had two weeks of rehearsal when he took over this role from Matthew Broderick
Umm was it really necessary to rag on Daniel's performance in the description box. I saw Daniel in the role and he gave an amazing and infectious performance with his energy.
Agreed. I saw Daniel and Nick. Missed Darren because was so short. But Daniel was very good. Any nastiness is unnecessary and Darren would be the first to say so.
Darren is amazing!!!! But we all knew he would be considering he was on Glee!!! But you have to admit that Daniel Radcliffe's was amazing too considering no one knew he could sing or dance not even his castmates. So can't we agree that both guys are Legends???!!!!!
Exactly both had different versions of the role but each pulled off the role, personally I prefer Dan's version it might not have been as vocally clean but he had a energy I found lacking in Darren
All the comments comparing Darren and Dan but when I watch either version all I can think of HARRY CAN SING AND DANCE. HARRY FRIGGIN POTTER. YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. HES A LEGEND.
Both Daniel and Darren did an amazing job during their performances. Each one brought something new and exciting to the show. They both let their personalities shine in their performances. They should not be torn down for their faults in the number, come one people let's just applaud them on their success and not ridicule them on the things they lacked. These two are superb individuals. Team starkid and team potter!
As always, Darren is a joy to watch. So much talent and energy and he stands tall and holds his own in the company of so many veterans of the stage. Well done Darren!
whenever someone says that darren cant dance i send them this video and whenever i read an interview where darren says he cant dance i watch this video to remind myself that he is lying to us because he very clearly can dance hahaha
I am a real fan of Darren Criss and his work. But on THIS performance alone - compared to Daniel's performance of the same song at the Tony Awards - I think Daniel was the winner.
can everyone stop trying to 'one up' the other? they were all brilliant in their own ways!! three different performers makes for three different characters and performances.....none any less successful or well performed than the other :) seriously, i would have happily have seen ANY of them in the show, rather than not being able to go at all XD
So, I just watched Daniel Radcliffe's version of this, and not a single one of the comments was comparing his performance to Darren's. Why is it that Darren's fan (Starkids, Gleeks, whatever) are so obsessed with him being better than everyone else? Just something to think on...
oh my holy sweet hell! darren criss u WILL be the death of me one of these fine days. i swear to god there is no one out there that even comes close to how incredible u r. u are THE most amazing person to ever grace the planet and i can safely say that God most definitely took a lot longer creating the masterpiece that is u. i saw u on broadway - i mean i came from ireland just to make it to see my beaituful man non the big stage. such an amazing person bt i dnt hav enuf room to keep writing!
He did very well too. But among all three I liked Daniel's the most. Maybe because both Darren and Jonas kinda blend in with the other actors. Meanwhile Daniel's portrayal gives off a really youthful and innocent vibe which makes a nice contrast with the other actors.
Wow Darren is my inspiration! He is one reason I keep working hard to follow my dreams and get on broadway one day. He is a great actor and singer. So incredible!!!
You can tell that he’s not at all member of the infamous “child actors” club, after doing Harry Potter he could have just led his career in a comfortable fashion, only in front of cameras and not take risks, instead he went for it full on, chose to challenge himself at his work, cause he had enough money from the potter films to simply surf fame, but no, he took the road full on, reinventing his work. We all know that whatever amount of money he made on Broadway he would of made at least 5 times more on movie sets, so I think this earned him a lot more respect not just amongst his fans, but most of all amongst his peers in acting. Way to go. You can tell that he really enjoys what he does, the paths he took, in a business that’s full of young people who stumbles into fame, and act as if they were being victimized by all of it. It’s refreshing to see his career choices. He is famous but he isn’t defined by it, he understands fame is just a bi-product of talent.
Imagine going to see this show and Darren is stepping in that night, or even Nick Jonas. I would be happy to see anyone of them Daniel, Nick or Darren. All are very talented
pendorran wow guys this starts to get really annoying and disrespectful. the joke was funny maybe 8 years ago but now it’s just completely overused and rude
Don't think Pink was even ever discussed. But the reason for the purple was to fit in the with the color palate of the show. (Blue, Green, Purple, and Red)
Judging purely from RU-vid videos, I think Dan actually gave a better performance - he was a bit stronger in the role - both vocally and with stage presence.
Both Dan and Darrin were good, but my favorite was Dan. I’m particularly impressed that he spoke and sung in an American accent when he is a British actor. I’ve heard an American accent is very hard for British actors to pull off.
Darren’s voice doesn’t resonate as well as Daniel’s did. His voice has always been quiet, which isn’t great for musical theater, but he is a great singer for pop
Although Darren Criss is a heat performer, he was too suave and sophisticated for the role of Finch. Finch is supposed to be a nerdy and sort of annoying but locale character, and Darren Criss doesn't really fit the role. Dan Radcliffe fit the role better because he is nerdy and gave the annoying voice but you liked the character. I'm not saying Darren Criss is BAD, but when it comes to roles, Dan was better.
What's your opinion on John Stamos in the role, cause he did it way back when? I would assume he was more like Darren's Finch than Dan's. I saw Dan's and loved it, but I love Darren too.
Dan just fits the character most to me which like you said is nerdy and sort of annoying but very endearing. Plus idk Darren didn’t seem to be giving his all to the dance which is a focal part of this performance, which Dan at least in every recording I’ve seen is giving his whole.
Why do you have to put down Daniel on your description. Insecure much? Anyways I would say Daniel was better and had much more of an impact in this role.
What people dont understand that Daniel was never musically trained, hes an film actor first then a musical actor second. Where as darren trained in musical theatre before becoming an actor
Darren is really great, seriously! But Dan was better.. I think Dans voice and style suits the play better than darren :) darrens voice is so smooth and clean, Dans was more rough and kind of unpolished, which was perfect for the character! :D (my opinion, don't hate!)
Some of these comments are so rude. I came here to see Darren. He did amazing in the role. There are comments here saying he sucks and has no talent? Clearly some people need to watch glee 😂
Daniel and Chris were both excellent, but I’m partial to Daniel’s performance. Darren was more lighthearted, while Daniel made it seem like there was an underlying nervousness in the character, and I liked that.
Lmao at the description. Dude you nuts if you think Darren did better. Both of them are good but Daniel did a much better job at performing while in character. Sad to say but as talented as Darren is, in this performance it's just Darren dancing and singing, not Flinch.
Darren seemed more forced and less energetic. Meanwhile Dan who on top of singing and dancing is maintaining a American accent has a very high energy performance that draws people. Darren is good but this is not his best work.
I know Darren (in general) has a better voice than Dan (we've seen him sing beautifully), but this performance just looks weak. Darren is not even putting much effort in his vocals, just enough to carry the tune, while Dan made use of all he had, both singing and dancing. For me, Dan is simply way more charismatic than Darren in this role.
Imagine if instead of this song he just sang “Hermione Can’t Draw!” For 5 minutes Also, I thought this was Daniel Radcliffe at first, but I was pleasantly surprised to see Harry Freakin’ Potter in the Muggle World
Darren Criss is fine, but the notion that he is better than Daniel Radcliffe I can't agree with. According to me, Daniel Radcliffe gets an "A" for this number and Darren Criss gets a B-minus.
Nope, I saw Darren Criss and Daniel Radcliffe perform in this show, and Darren Criss was better. He's also much greater eye candy than Radcliffe. Radcliffe is kind of fugly. Obviously, I'm not a Radcliffe fan.
Darren Criss is clumsy and doesn't do all the things that Daniel did in this number. He is quite limited and seems very unnatural here. Also due to Darren's limitations, he seems to bring down the rest of the cast. Daniel is the best.
Dan was so high energy the number must have been killer but it was fun and it was actually the reason I started to get into the musical Darren like you said seems unnatural and stiff. Not to mention he almost feels to cool and layback for such a loud energetic group number...
if you have to use the excuse of a two week rehearsal process, then you are basically admitting that he does not have the ability to succeed on Broadway (pun intended). two weeks is standard for ANYONE replacing ANYONE in a Broadway musical.
Two comments: I saw this show twice, once each with Dan and Nick. Both were very good but preferred Dan in the roll. 2nd comment: People who record Broadway shows are a**holes. It’s very distracting to the people around you. Just enjoy the live theatre in front of you, that you paid a lot of money to see.
Darren Criss gives me the creeps. He made his money playing gay characters, now he says he's finished with that, but more importantly, he CAN"T ACT!!!. Daniel Radcliffe was far superior in this role as was Nick Jonas and Matthew Broderick.
This is the stupidest comment I’ve ever read. You can’t blame Darren that he got cast in roles as gay characters and most definitely can act. Don’t compare them in this roll.
