In this tutorial, you will learn how to personalize a coffee mug using your Brother ScanNCut. The model of Scan and Cut used is the CM350 or ScanNCut 2. First, I showed how to use the PC version of Brother Canvas Workspace to access a font on my computer called Milkshake. I placed text onto the screen, enlarged it and then I went to Process Overlap, Weld to weld most of the letters together. This creates a smoother look for the mug or jar you are decorating. The fewer the pieces to cut out, the better. Next, I shared how to resize the text to fit onto my coffee mug project. I personalized the coffee mug for my friend Nicole. I showed how to save and transfer the file to your Brother ScanNCut machine. Then, I showed you how to retrieve the file on the CM350 and cut it out on vinyl. I used a Blade Depth of 1.5 for cutting out vinyl. This is a kiss cut in that it cuts through the top layer of vinyl and not the backing. Next, I demonstrated how to remove the vinyl not used, leaving just the font on the backing. I demonstrated how to use weeding tools to get rid of the inside pieces so that just the word Nicole was left behind. Then, I used Transfer Tape to apply the vinyl to the mug.

Thanks Susan! You can do small vinyl projects with transfer tape. You just have to eyeball it. You can also use other craft tools to weed with. I’m glad you plan on trying it.

Great tutorial!! Is there anything you can put over the vinyl to keep it on longer then a year? Also can you do tutorial on a iron-on using the computer fonts? Or a pic from clip-art? I would like to make a few Mario shirts for my grandson. Don't know where to start. Tfs 💕

Oh yes! There is heat transfer vinyl which you can use. I just use the sticker vinyl because that is what I have a lot of. I cover using iron on material in my Advanced Course. My Mom was my guest. So I just got a Mug press for Mother's Day from my hubby and I have been told that you can use it without a Cricut cutting machine, well I can't seem to do that. I have tried to use it with my ScanNCut and it just can't be done.. So I guess next month I will have to add a Cricut joy to my crafty items..

Norine, I’ve used so many kinds of vinyl and I really don’t think it matters. Cricut makes pretty durable vinyl in that it stays on my cups for about a year before it starts peeling off. I only hand wash the cups and mugs. Glad you are learning a lot.

Great idea! I use sticker vinyl but heat transfer vinyl may be better for that. I’m not sure where all of my plain bone folders are. If I find one, I can show you but I really want my students who watch my videos to follow along and apply what they learn here. Follow these steps and resize your text and you have vinyl small enough for a bone folder.

Beth, here is what you need to get started. Vinyl and transfer tape. I use Cricut and many other brands like Oracle. I only have to replace my vinyl about once a year and that is when I use my mugs a few times a week or even every day. I just don't put them in the dishwasher. I hand wash them. Great idea for using plain items and making them pretty.... could you use the alphabet on the Scan N Cut and do this?

Oh yes Terrie, you can use any font on your machine or even a shape or pattern. Then, you just use vinyl instead of paper and a blade depth of 1.5. It will be nice if you personalize items. The vinyl sticks onto mugs really well as long as it doesn't go into the dishwasher.
