a merlin is basically a mountain dulcimer, a diatonic instrument, then the sound feasible agreements within a scale. It is usually tuned in D-A-d-d then you'll have a low D, an A and two D high, twins. It follows that you can only play the chords of Dscale : D, E, F #, G, A, B, C #, both major and minor. obviously if you change tuning, scale changes and agreements, but do you always miss someone. I usually tune my merlin a step above in E for my voice patterns and to stabilize sound, but the fundamentals are the same. What I can recommend is to change the key of the song you want to play to fit the merlin, when you can, but sometimes, this can not be done and then you just have to....change song! :-)
