This is the ONLY time Sanaa belongs with Taye. I said what I said. This is personally one of my favorite rom coms. They had similar interests, they were on EQUAL FOOTING, and seemed to really had each other's best interests in heart. It is one of few black romcoms that isnt filled with toxicity and then wrapped it in hip hop history.

I liked Nicole Ari Parker's catty rival character to Sanaa's. I also liked that this movie was realistic about how hard it is to break into the music business (any facet of the entertainment business), and how downright harsh even condescending people are when it comes to trying to kill your dreams.

Let me start off by saying your reviews are amazing! It really feels like we’re all sitting in your living room chatting about our favorite movies! Thank you for what you do! Here’s my Controversial Take: I love Brown Sugar more than Love and Basketball. So to me it’s definitely under appreciated. I can admit that Love and Basketball is a better directed movie and a better performance from Sanaa. But something about this movie just lands with me. I was a teenager when this came out and I wanted to meet a girl and build this kind of connection so bad!! 😂😂 As an adult I realized two things when I rewatched this. 1. Sanaa is absolutely stunning, but isn’t the best actress. I feel the like the charisma of Mos Def, Taye, and Queen carried the movie. 2. Wendell Pierce’s character HAD to be based on Diddy! When you think of the time and Diddy having shows like Making Da Band trying to manufacture successful groups while also having artists starting to coming out to talk about their bad deals with Bad Boy at the time I’m sure Simon was loosely based on him. 😂

Lets add "Nappily Ever After" & "Something New" as 2 other rom com where Sanaa Lathan is STILL playing the same character. Listen. I loveeee Sanaa but I'm seeing as an adult that she doesn’t have any range. And in a weird way, the child in me loves her that way. I got to see Sanaa looking and sounding like the Sanaa I loved in many movies, living different lives with different loves, jobs and families😁

They shined well in this film. I feel like they made the film more interesting. 17:31 this is what some toxic women do who try to mark their territory at the last minute. Knowing she rejected him in the past. 20:30 this probably could’ve been a hit if they came out with this song in this time period. Overall, I think the movie is very realistic which is why I think it wasn’t as bad as everyone else made it. I literally seen situations like this in real time. But your review on it was solid and very entertaining. 5 star review

This is the best review of this movie. I have ALWAYS been bugged by Dre's disrespect of his wife and the depction of Reece as some cold , controlling wife when in fact, everything she said to Dre was rightt! Dre WAS marginalising her and gaslighting her by acting like she was wrong to be offended that he went to his 'Friend' before coming to her...Dre was no catch. Selfish, self involved, diloyal...and you're right....Saana was playing a bunch of inerchangeable roles with some dusty , good looking, time wasting men! Poor thing, she had to eat some vanilla ice cream to get some unconditional love and sweet nothings leading to big something!

Random questions/ observations: Why was Sydney as a grown woman wearing little girl ornaments in her hair? The ballies. Was that supposed to foreshadow her childishness of going about the relationship? How long did Reese know Dre? Perhaps she would’ve noticed the warning signs it wasn’t going to go well if she waited it out longer Why was Reese paying off her own wedding ring? RED FLAG 🚩 Great review, but I didn’t like the movie overall. All the toxicity between the couples and the cheating made me not enjoy the romance aspect but the hip hop aspect was great, the beginning felt like I was starting a cool documentary.
@happyclappy1805

100 %. It might have been better as a hip hop history/herstory. Reece was woman enough to try to make it work while Dre just had no accountablity. He didn't deserve either of these women

Funny as hell as usual, love your reviewing style. But this movie is trash, I hate the trope of two life long friends never making a move or making a half-assed move at a relationship and suddenly when the other person gets involved with someone else and it’s too late blah blah blah. Sidney and Andre had almost 2 DECADES to get together without all the drama of this movie. And he was off the market first, why is he calling her to ask about her love life and whispering and shit!??? I don’t blame his wife for going out on a date and fulfilling her needs/wants, even if it was cheating physically, (he was cheating emotionally)cuz her man was trash. How are you NOT confiding in your wife about your dreams, problems, etc…?? As your life partner I shouldn’t have to pry it out of you. It’s not like homegirl wasn’t trying either😂. And the trash writing, you’re right, they tried to make Sidney and Andre come out of this situation smelling like roses. 🙄 uh uh, lean a lil bit closer see roses really smell like poo poo pooh. The littlest “faults” in their significant others made them less than and not even worthy of being with them anymore. Like no, y’all both trash and deserve nothing. 🤨😂🤣

I really like your review and I have to agree, it was really love & basketball all over again but with music. I have to say the dynamic between Dre and Sydney was really interesting and really cute, especially how they met, but I feel that since both of them, specifically Sidney were really dragging their whole relationship too much after that rooftop rejection, it ruined them(Dre, specifically). Plus, Dre should've stayed single but still took a chance on seeing somebody else. I believe that Dre was 'the best man' to and for Sydney, but she wasn't exactly the same, even though she clearly had feelings for him. It's very funny yet kinda cute how Sanaa was in 4 movies(The Wood, Love & Basketball, The Best Man, and Brown Sugar) with both Taye and Omar Epps, where she plays their CHILDHOOD LOVE interests, the only difference is Sanaa and Taye's characters(The Best Man) didn't know the other for that many years. In other movies, they played with each other's feelings(Harper did Robin very wrong by cheating), and (Sidney kinda did Dre wrong by playing hard to get). Overall, Dre is way better than Harper, character-wise, but they're also kinda similar in wanting someone they always loved(Sidney and Jordan) while treating their significant others(Robin and Reese) wrong to do it. Reese was definitely a victim, but it's great that she found somebody else(her real-life husband, how cute!). I think that Dre should've moved on, or at least tried to even if he felt like someone may not measure up to his Sydney. But I feel like if he did find (and probably married) that someone, I can definitely imagine it being Robin(The Best Man), Sidney's doppelganger.

I hated this movie as a “kid” should’ve stayed in a child’s place! As in adult, I like it more than love and basketball. Res would’ve been justified for crime of passion “just saying” shrugs!!!! Dre and Sydeney played in her face tooo much and gas lit her to no end. I sound like I hate the movie lol. This 27 year old me today, can appreciate this and understand this is how life goes.
