CONNECTED BY ZOOM, MUSIC, AND HISTORY
The Brown University Chattertocks have been singing the same a cappella arrangement of ‘‘My Funny Valentine” since 1951. Each era brings new singers, new trends in music, and new songs, but for the dozen or so women who make up the Chattertocks at any given moment, "My Funny Valentine" is the touchstone to our history.
That’s why, when some ‘Tocks of the mid-’80s reconnected via Zoom, and yearned to blend voices again, doing our rendition of "Valentine" was the obvious first choice. This video is the result, and features 13 women from the classes of 1984-88, now in our 50s and located all over the country. Each sang her part alone at home, recording on her phone. Many takes and bloopers later, our tracks were melded by a video editor and enlivened with old photos from our time at Brown. The takeaway? Our singing sisterhood runs deep, and the shared experience brought some much needed cheer and connection in the time of Corona.
