Once you understand “down and distance” you’ll understand it almost completely. -The team with the ball has 4 tries (downs) to make it 10 yards. If they do make it 10 yards, they get to keep the ball and get another 4 downs (tries if you will..). If they don’t make it 10 yards in 4 downs/tries, they often have to punt the ball to the other team. **Here’s a simple example, 1st and 10 means (first try, 10 yards to go to keep the ball). If the offense moves it only three yards, then the “down and distance” becomes 2nd and 7. (Which means second try, 7 yards to go to keep the ball). And so on and so on, but the team with the ball only gets 4 downs/tries to make it 10 yards. If the offense DOES make the 10 yards, then they get to keep the ball with a new “set of downs” starting with 1st and 10 again, which is called a “first down” and the offense gets to keep the ball and have it at their advanced field position starting with 1st and 10 again. The idea being to keep the ball and do this all the way up the field and either score a field goal (3 points) or a touchdown (6 points). If the offense scores a touchdown, they have the benefit of kicking an “extra point” which is pretty easy. So in most cases, the result of a touchdown is really 7 points. Once I explained this to my wife many years ago, she became a huge American Football fan. Welcome aboard friend!

its a really fun game. once you start to get an idea of who's who, and how the games works a little bit it gets to be a whole lot more exciting. the stories that can be built up can be so hype. I remember the exact moment I fell in love with the game. it was being introduced to one of the greats and learning what made them special and then watching them make a big play. it just becomes apart of you at that point. whether you become a fan of a whole team (pick the 49ers) or a fan of individual players you'll find moments that become great memories.
