The girl and boy R&B groups of the 90s - each and every singer in every group could sing lead.

"Grapevyne" & "5 miles to empty" by Brownstone.

Brownstone was one of the best female groups out in the 90’s. Vocally, no other girl group sang like them. Michael Jackson signed them immediately after hearing them sing accapella (for him in person). Their first album was successful. Went platinum. They released If You Love Me, Grapevyne and I Can’t Tell You Why as singles. They went through a transition as one of the original members left the group. They released a second album with a new member. They released 5 Miles To Empty (search for that one too) There’s a video for that song as well…. Unfortunately for a lot of acts in the 90’s, labels transitioned and folded. MJ’s label did that over time and the lovely ladies moved on for a bit. Maxee (beautiful sister in this video with the braids) passed away. Brownstone has since revamped with two new members and founding member Nicci (short hair) and plan on releasing new music this year.

The lead singer with the short hair did an episode of Martin where she play Pam's cousin and Martin call herself being a manager and tryed to get her a record deal

This 1994 classic R&B 90's track btw. It was a huge hit qt the time.Check out other 90's female groups that can really sing. En Vogue Don't let go, Hold on and SWV - Rain, Use your heart, Jade Don't walk away, Changing faces Ladies man and Zhane Hey DJ. Nicci Gilbert, one of the singers in Brownstone also had a smooth song called Summer.

Mimi was the one who didn't sing leads on this song. She has a lead vocal on their song "Grapevyne." All three of them are powerhouse singers.

Underrated group from the 90s. Three women sounding like an entire choir! They had 2 maybe 3 hits so I wouldn't necessarily call them a one-hit wonder. I don't think they have a song where each member sings. Maxee and or Nicci are usually the leads while Mimi sang soprano, or the high voice, until she left the group. Mimi sings the last verse on "Grapevyne".

Xscape and En Vogue are two groups where all 4 members can SANGGG

This was by far their best song. I got it in my top 10 R&B tracks of the 90's.

Nicci Gilbert is still friends with Kelly Price and Faith Evans in regular life. She experienced a lot trauma in the industry behind her weight and liposuction. She’s stated plenty times she’s no longer interested in being an artist.

Young man, me watching you listen to this song for the first time was a real treat. It brought me back to when I would listen to this song. 90s R&B was a special time and this group was grossly underrated. Driving around and listening to this song on repeat was therapy for me. Haha. Your physical reactions were mine as well. This group did several versions of this song. The video is a slower version at the end. There’s another version where they blow the roof off at the end and keep it upbeat. You’ll see the difference at about the 3:00 minute mark here.
