James Arness was Bruce Boxleitner's mentor on HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1976-79). The TV superstar was instrumental in Bruce getting the role of Luck Macahan, nephew of Arness' frontiersman, Zeb. It was a huge break for Box. Not only did he quickly take to the saddle, but the expensive series of 24 2-hour movies featured many of the actors and actresses film buff Boxleitner grew up admiring. Besides...it was a WESTERN. He was thrilled!
In this conversation, on Part 2 of our in-depth look at the epic series, Bruce talk's about learning to ride and the life lessons he learned from from 6'7" Arness about what it takes to be a TV star. Bruce even married the actress who portrayed his sister in the series, Kathryn Holcomb. "Kitty" attended the taping and briefly shares the spotlight and some memories of the show with the jam packed audience of western fans.
Following HOW THE WEST WAS WON, 1983 Golden Boot Award winner Boxleitner continued with western roles like "I Married Wyatt Earp" (1983), "The Gambler" series of TV movies (1980-1994), "Wyatt Earp: Return to Tombstone" (1994), "Aces 'N' Eights" (2008), and two more films with Big Jim Arness: "Red River" (1998) and "Gunsmoke: One Man's Justice" (1994). As the lead in the popular comedy mystery series "Scarecrow and Mrs. King" (1983-1987, Bruce got to wear a tux! Then, he ventured into outer space as Tron, in "TRON" (1982" and "TRON: Legacy" (2010), and the "Babylon 5" series (1993-98) and TV movies.
This special episode of A WORD ON WESTERNS also features HOW THE WEST WAS WON series' costumer and actor, Al Fleming, who takes the AWOW mic for a rollicking story of some wild bareback riding in one of director Burt Kennedy's episodes. This is from one of our earliest A WORD ON WESTERNS productions and was recorded Feb 2014 in The Autry Museum's cafe.

I was born in 1953 my Dad was a huge fan of westerns and I grow up watching Gun Smoke and I still watch it in reruns. We need more westerns today I learned what a man should be watching John Wayne.James Arness, Richard Boone and so many more. Even the new cowboy stars Like Bruce Boxleitner, Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot are old men now we need more men like t all these guys.

Rob, once again, I can't begin to find the words to thank you enough for these stories ! These stories would otherwise be lost forever to time Rob ! Thank you SO MUCH ROB !. Every one of yours guests have a number of little tidbits of PURE GOLD ! Hearing Bruce speak of hiring a guide for that 10hr. Monument Valley "Bucket List" ride would be nothing short of simply priceless ! Would there be any chance you might be able to locate a name of anyone who might be able to recreate a guided ride anything even close to being that caliber of ride, would be nothing short of amazing Rob ! Looking forward to hearing back from you on this ! Thank you SO MUCH ! Ray & Linda Parsons

Thanks, quadsman. The best group to go with is run by Steve and Marcie Shaw. They are www.Great-American-Adventures.com. I've done the Monument Valley Ride with them. We rode for 6 days and I spoke about movies that were filmed in the area in the evenings. It was TERRIFIC! There's even an episode of AWOW about it, "Clint Eastwood vs Johnny Depp" where I interview Effie Yazzie, the Navajo guide. She has the Coronavirus, which is hitting the area especially terrible! Fortunately, this Fall's ride was cancelled back in April.

@@AWordonWesterns Thanks Rob, As always, extremely valued information ! The ride sounds incredible ! But having you do the evening narratives would be absolutely priceless ! Do I remember you mentioning that your dad stopped during a family vacation, and being able to have a picture taken with the Duke ? To be able to see and hear all the actors, actresses, directors and stuntmen and hear their stories is pure joy! In the summer of 1976 I drove the family station wagon from Florida to Tucson with a younger sister and her friend to pick up our older sister who had recently graduated from the University of AZ. We toured Old Tucson before heading north to California to visit our foster brother in San Francisco. Along the way the girls insisted we see the Grand Canyon and spend a night in Monument Valley. We didn't have the time or funds to take the Grand Canyon trail ride or helicopter tour, so our stop there lasted about as long as that scene in National Lampoon's Vacation. Next came Monument Valley, which was the most desolate place on Earth I had experienced up to that point (prior to touring the Mid East). At first I couldn't convince them that the oppressive heat, lack of vegetation, and nonexistent amenities was sufficient reason to depart immediately. After a couple of hours their attitudes changed and we were back on the road again winging west to the coast. Monument Valley looks impressive on the big screen but it is not for the faint of heart in the heat of summer. Of course, I wasn't tracking down any lost relatives, so my motivation may have been a bit lacking.

Rob, Thank you so much for doing these interviews! I have been a fan of westerns all my life. Being born in 1956, I have seen as many movies and series as I could, and still do. Some I can watch over and over again like El Dorado. You're bringing the backgrounds of the process, and especially the personalities of the actors, on and off the screen, the staff involved, is wonderful. I can say that certain bad person actors that I just hated on the screen are just the nicest people off screen as you have interviewed that I have a whole new attitude about them. I watch all the channels that feature westerns, and it seems they play the same ones over and over for years. I loved "Hombre", but someday I will throw my remote at the TV if they play it again. Oops, there goes my remote. There just has to be many more movies that are sitting in vaults just waiting to be shown. Is there, or have I seen most of them. It's rare, but every once in a while I will find one like this spaghetti western with Telly Savalas. Any comments?

Thanks for your thoughts, tom. Certain films always get viewers and are repeated and repeated as they are licensed to the growing list of available channels. I've been discovering lots of "new" old westerns by scrolling though the grid and watching them. I'm always amazed when I see one that I've missed. I, too, stop every time HOMBRE is running.

I watched the entire weekly series when I was pregnant with our first daughter when It started on TV , and EVERY time someone brings it BACK! As Rob said below, GetTv has it on currently - Saturday, 9:30 am -12 noon, and the next episode on Sunday 9:30 am -12 noon. I record and watch it every week ANY time I catch the series on. Love ALL the actors and the writing. Once in awhile they show it back to back for a whole WEEKEND. When it started, I noticed that my reproduction (inexpensive) of one of C.M. Russell's was used in the closing credits!! I about DIED and went to heaven! I also LOVE buffalo and native american culture/photos/items, and the picture i have is of buffalo being rounded up on the plains. My husband thought I was nuts, until NEXT week when it was on I SHOWED him MY PICTURE on the wall when it came on the screen! It was easy to pick out, as the "distinctive buffalo in the middle has his tail up (ahem) in the air almost in a question mark. ha ha. The Gene Autry Museum where they shot these two segments with the cast and crew is fabulous, if you're anywhere near Glendale, CA ever. They re-named it The Autry Museum of the American West.
