Oscar nominated actor Bruce Davison's amazing career has given audiences hundreds of powerful performances. Early roles in films like LAST SUMMER, THE STRAWBERRY STATEMENT and WILLARD led him to a starring role with Burt Lancaster in the classic western, ULZANA'S RAID (1972). Bruce remembers embarrassing himself with director Robert Aldrich when he landed the role and being dazzled by the lineup of top stunt men and women working on the film. More fun adventures followed on and off set. Join us in viewing this interview to celebrate Bruce's June 28th birthday with this re-edited, full length conversation done to a roomful of fans at The Autry Museum, Jan 20, 2016. Happy Birthday, Ratboy, and thanks for joining us!

@hiramnoone
@hiramnoone 3 года назад
@@tuckhorse Yeah. Audie was exceptional in Unforgiven, showing more range than any of his previous films. Really rising to the demands of that film, demonstrating that when required, he could hold his own with the best. My favorite Lancaster film will always be From Here to Eternity. But really, starting with Desert Fury through, Sweet Smell of Success, Seven Days in May, The Professionals, Ulzana's Raid , Atlantic City and Field of Dreams in the latter part of his career, he never gave a bad performance.

Burt Lancaster is and was one of my favorite actors of all time. I watched him in movies where he was doing high drama and other films where he did comedy in his own way. He was a a swashbuckling hero and every form of western hero and a few bad guys too. I can’t remember ever disliking any movie he was in. It is always pleasure hearing about him from the people who made movies with him. Thanks Rob for another great Word on Westerns presentation.

"Willard". I thought it couldn't get any creepier, until Crispin Glover did the remake. Another great stuntman who worked on "Ulzana's Raid" was Dick Farnsworth who also played a Cavalry trooper killed because of Bruce's lieutenant's inexperience. Had a death scene completely cut from the picture, but referred to by Richard Jaekel's Sergeant in dialogue. Dick must have gotten tired of that because after three decades of stunt work he turned to acting and in late middle age became one of the finest and most respected character actors in the business. Bruce is a great story teller and a very funny guy. Loved it. Ooops! Was writing this while watching and as it turned out Bruce near the end wasn't remiss at all, and *did* mention Dick Farnsworth having been in UR, and with great respect. Thanks Bruce, Dick was one of my favorites. This was terrific, Rob. I think one of your best to date.

In 1987 I did a little background work in a couple of movies, one was "Poor Little Rich Girl" starring Farrah Fawcett. Bruce Davison was in it as well. I worked one day as a press photographer in a scene where Farrah and Kevin McCarthy are walking along the docks after her steamship voyage from Europe. I and five other "photographers" basically blinded McCarthy with our 1930's era flash cameras. There was also a scene where Farrah and Bruce are exiting the ship - walking down a ramp partially covered by an awning. They did a few practice runs of this, with a small group of extras watching nearby (well I sorta watched...kind of). During these run-throughs, a man came up to me and said: " Don't go anywhere, you're Bruce's stand-in for this shot." I said "o.k." (not really knowing what that meant at the time) and turned to see them finishing up the last run-through. Uh oh. The one thing I did notice, was Bruce kind of "swinging" on one of the poles that was holding up the awning as he walked down the ramp. The even smaller group of extras turned stand-ins were then swapped out with the actors. We did 5 or 6 run throughs while all the technical stuff was dialed in, and then we were swapped back out and they did the scene. Yes, I did "swing" on the pole too. So, I guess you could say that for 15 minutes, I was Bruce Davison. Since Richard Farnsworth was mentioned, I'll tell the one small anecdote that I have, My Father in Law was a movie stuntman/horse wrangler. His first movie was Cimarron with Richard Dix (1931) A few others that he could remember: Stablemates - Mickey Rooney & Wallace Beery (both tried to upstage the other every chance they got), Stagecoach - Indian/Trooper (1939), A Day at the Races - jockey(1937) and many more. WW2 ended his "picture" career, after that he joined the family road building business. But he did continue participating in Rodeos - cutting horse was his specialty. I asked him (this was when he was in his late 80's) what stunts he did in the movies. He said basically anything to do with horses: Falls, Running Falls, Ride Roman, Drive Stagecoaches, Wagons, Buggies, Shooting guns or bow & arrows at full gallop... and he played all nationalities-Indians, Cossacks, Mongols, whatever. He was good friends with Wild Bill Elliott. He knew Richard Farnsworth, but hadn't seen him in a very long time. So anyway, my Father in Law and Richard Farnsworth happened to be at the same rodeo/western event around 1990(ish). My FIL went up to Farnsworth and said "Diamond Dick Farnsworth." Farnsworth looked at him and immediately said: "Ed Tomei, I haven't seen you in 40 years!" By this time my FIL's hair had turned from jet black to pure white. Diamond Dick had a good memory. They talked for a while and that was about it. I'll leave the story of my FIL and his brother "stealing" Tom Mix's horse (In real life) for another day.

I remember seeing him in movies as a character actor, but I didn't know that he was the lead actor in Willard, a movie I watched when I was a child. I'm going to look for Last Summer and The Strawberry Statement. I'm on a mission to watch vintage films during this pandemic. He's hilarious. I was so entertained hearing him talk about Burt Lancaster and the other actors he had the chance to work with. His Ian McKellen's voice is on point. And the surprise I had when he said he auditioned for the role of Luke Macahan as well...Hum, I can't picture Luke being anyone else, but Bruce Boxleitner. LOL

I really love how Bruce Davison tells a story. I've seen you use bits out this interview in other episodes, and enjoyed how he tells a story of something or other with great self deprecating humour. Although I first remember seeing him in Willard, it is Ulzana's Raid and his duo with Burt Lancaster in this great western that stands out to this day. The story of how he got the roll and his first two shot with Burt can be used a million times and never get old. I keep saying it, and it doesn't make any less true, another great episode.

ULZANA'S RAID was a first class gritty western with incredible stunts... Dean Smith's horse falls that catapulted him off, it looked like the "running-W" was used, either that or that was a really well trained horse. Robert Aldrich reteaming with Burt Lancaster twenty years later after APACHE and VERA CRUZ... my uncle who was assistant studio manager of MGM British, introduced me to him on the set of THE DIRTY DOZEN. He was a brilliant and very under-rated director who always made thought provoking and entertaining movies that made money. It was Lancaster and his production company that gave Aldrich his big movie directing break, having started out as an assistant director on some very impressive pictures. Rob's guest BRUCE DAVIDSON certainly knows how to entertain and keep his cowboy audience riveted that's for sure! Too bad they won't let Rob host the Oscars, because he really knows how to keep these live audience shows moving and memorable!
@AWordonWesterns

@grahamhill6340
@grahamhill6340 Год назад
@@AWordonWesterns Rob, it certainly looked like the "running-W" was used, but seeing as the whole picture was shot in Arizona, under supposedly AHA control, I'd say it was just a more humane variation of that notorious trick... The legendary Yakima Canutt always said if the "running-W" was performed properly it was easier on both the horse and rider, but when you see the 1936 classic Charge Of The Light Brigade, they certainly weren't doing it properly, as evidenced by the deaths of so many horses, and serious injuries to so many riders... what's more, it even looked obvious seeing the trip wires!
