@@paulstan9828 what was the name of the character who used to toot the bugle lol. I used to live near my work, 5-7 minutes away, and I would come home for lunch. Almost every day I would turn on this movie and watch the dinner scene, the scene where James Caan and John Wayne are eating dinner, right after Mississippi avenges his friend's death.

It's kind of the nature of the beast. A cowboy spruced up for the dance don't look like a real cowboy.

I tried watching it twice before I ever heard anything about it being a disaster and I could never finish it, it was just BORING. Quite a waste of money, talent and everything that should have worked.

@@takkmoran9770 I really wanted to like this movie because of my love of film and history. I appreciate attention to detail that Cimino used, but I still couldn't slog my way through it. I might try again with a new perspective. I'm hoping one of the edited versions might work even though I usually hate taking anything away from a movie.

Old westerns weren't bloody

Love it!

Don't you still consider those shows as westerns. I do. I consider "The Last of the Mohicans" as a western. The 1936 version even starred Randolph Scott. I even consider a lot of swashbuckler films as westerns with swords, especially "Zorro" movies and television.

"Justified" was basically a western set in modern times. I heard that they are doing a revival of it.

"The Big Country" was the first movie I saw in an indoor theater. I loved it and have it on DVD. I was young and impressionable and afterwards tried to pattern my life after the Gregory Peck character.

A Word on Westerns Cheers thats very good mail Rob , Oz has always been a microcosm of America’s take on life through its Movies & and when young I compared every Western including Oz movies to Red River , The Searchers , Liberty Valance , I’m sure a lot people did because of their quality & popularity. Sundowners a absolute classic but not a western ! also not Westerns but worth a watch ‘Sunday Too Far Away’ (Jack Thompson) &. ‘ The Picture Show Man’ with Rod Taylor .. both good mid centenary Australian movies. Strange how growing up so far away from America but still placing actors like John Wayne , Lee Marvin. Jimmy Stewart , Robert Mitchum , on pedestals and seemingly remain there for most of a blokes life. when as a young Kid I bumped into Lee Marvin in the 1970s walking out of a shop in Cairns North Queensland , I was frozen but i knew it was him because he came to my home town each year fishing for Black Marlin out in the Coral Sea , the very same Coral Sea that Lee & the United States helped save Australia’s arse in during the Battle of the Pacific in WW2 🇺🇸 🇦🇺 🙏- ( first time I realised the world wasn’t really that big after all.) Lee used to kick around Cairns in local Pubs when not out on the Reef & was thought of by everyone , not as a big Star , but just as a good bloke , which is about as good as a compliment gets in Australia. He always used to say in the local paper & elsewhere that he only did the movies to finance his fishing. So judging by the popularly of your show a lot of Movie’s & TV shows are still obviously on people’s hard-drives & get refreshed every time from watching it , so cheers mate thanks for the introspection , I’m pretty sure you’re a good bloke. 👍

Two of the best westerns I ever saw were "The Man from Snowy River" and "Return to Snowy River." Also, "The Road Warrior" is basically a remake of "Shane." Two other great movies from Australia are "Breaker Morant" and "Phar Lapp" though not really westerns.

Take my strong advice, and I saw it on release, DON'T. Unless you want to see what's probably the worst film ever made, and with a huge budget and big name cast.

@@brianmccarthy5557 I remember hearing when it came out that it was not watchable. When a movie seems terrible to me I usually notice it within the first few minutes of viewing. I like to read and usually within a page or two I figure out whether I will continue or not. I still would like to see if I agree or not with the critics.

I see that Heaven's Gate is 5 hours and 25 minutes long. Sounds like a mini series.

I can understand all the swords in that movie, he was adapting a samurai story to a western setting. But why make the revolvers 12-shots?!? That was a little loopy. I guess he didn't want to slow things down to reload. Would've been a better movie if he'd kept the hardware more believable...

I actually saw it at a screening with Sam. It was written specifically for him and we all thought he gave a terrific performance. I liked the film and the way it reflected changing times.

Not a western, but i find it strange no one asked Sam Elliott the line " There's a book around ,Point of Impact ,with a character Bob Lee Swagger, interested ??".

@@MrPh30 I would've loved to have seen Point of Impact made with Stephen Lang, the bad guy from Avatar. Unfortunately Wahlberg made it into the movie/series Shooter and kinda ruined the character for what could've been a great franchise. Speaking of which, hey Rob, have you ever interviewed Stephen Lang? He was so good in Tombstone...he oughta do more westerns...

I always thought that if you cut it up you could get three decent movies out of it: a western, an immigrant story and a love story.

@@AWordonWesterns well sir. I reckon ideas are what I do best? Always loved his Westerns. Such a natural, dynamic actor in my opinion. Add in a great horseman, and what's not to like, right?

I wanted to recommend that myself. Lee Horsley was in "Paradise" or "The Guns of Paradise" and "Hawkeye" which I consider a western. Also, the female lead was in "The Man from Snowy River" and "Return to Snowy River" and on of the most beautiful women. Also, any of the actors from "The Magnificent Seven" television series, or the more recent remake.

It was an action film and I enjoyed John Russell as "Blackjack" - John was in the t.v. series "Law Man".

@@johnzeszut3170 I am a big fan of John Russell. I see that Warner Brothers has released four seasons of "Lawman" that I plan to buy. I even enjoyed him as the villains in "Rio Bravo" and "Pale Rider." However, I kept expecting George Peppard to say "I love it when a plan comes together" at the end of "Cannon for Cordoba."
