Most people don't know that Bruce is a straight up virtuoso on piano and his live concerts are filled with improvisation and all sorts of twists and turns. He also toured with the Grateful Dead and has recorded with many jazz legends...incredible musician!

Hornsby is one of the great all-time pianists. He’s got such an identifiable style. He had a great solo career, and also played on hits by others, such as I Cant Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt.

Bob Dylan said “Talent borrows, but genius steals.” God bless Tupac. It breaks my heart to think of all his unheard music. And Bruce has expressed his love and thanks… he appreciates the new audiences and also the royalty checks… Thank you so much for posting this, bro. Best wishes for your success! 🙏

Hornsby is a mad talented improviser & scat singer. He was a touring member of the Grateful Dead after their 3rd key player (Brent Mydland died). The key line in his song, (imho), comes after (people say) 'That's just the way it is'... BUT DON"T YOU BELIEVE THEM!! We can change if we keep trying.

I first heard this song as a little Canadian kid back in the 1980’s and really liked it, but wouldn’t have guessed at that time that several years later 2Pac would use it to make perhaps the greatest and most sobering rap song of all time. Really nice to hear this again!

This Bruce is THE MAN. He is as good of a person as he is a musician. You can tell by his lyrics. He really cares about other people. He has had an amazing career, that continues, fortunately, always on the edge. His short stint with the Grateful Dead brought him to a whole new audience, but of course WE (the heads) were already aware of him, thanks for sharing. Hey Marley, welcome.

Check out Huey Lewis and the News, "If this is it" 'I want a new drug" "Heart and soul" "Do you believe in love?" "HIp to be square" "Stuck with you" "Jacob's ladder" "I know what i like" he was a friend of Bruce Hornsby and produced a song on that album "The long long race"
@athlonen
@athlonen 2 года назад
More than that. Huey played harmonica on Every Little Kiss, and sang background vocals on Down the Road Tonight, all of which were on this album. To thank Huey, Bruce wrote him a song, Jacob’s Ladder, which ended up on Huey’s third album, Fore. It ended up #1, just like The Way It Is did.

I’ve loved this song since it was first released. I was just starting to discover music, and develop my own preferences in different musical genres. Still jealous that my older siblings had walkmans & stereos, and I had a hand-me-down beat up radio, that I’d pretty much have to put my ear right up against to hear anything. Yet it was one of the first songs that we all loved equally. Your puppy is adorable! 😍

I requested this song (with it's masterful music & lyrics) due to my sadness over current racial tensions; exacerbated by: Media, TV, Movies - 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐒𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐍𝐂𝐄, when 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥. This is why I love music. I am a 57 year old white male. I walked away from my career as a law enforcement officer in 2020. I could no longer stand with a profession that choose to remain silent while our country was in a state of unrest. We can all find common ground in music. Music bridges the gaps between generations. It spans the divides between races. There is something universal about it. Thank you for your channel. May I suggest Grass is Greener by St. Paul & The Broken Bones from the OurVinyl Sessions. Keep the music playing. We need it.

Knowing ‘music history’…. exactly my brotha! Kinda hilarious for me a musician, & o.g. @ this point. This came out in the heavy video era, after MJ, Prince, Whitney, Madonna & a ton of rock & r&b bands had lit that whole scene up. Video had become a big tool in sellin the music. Then here comes this cat, with a clear strong, yet simple voice, & simple setup of his band jammin on the tune in a room, & Bruce tearin up on the piano, sounding like a rock McCoy Tyner, the jazz legend who played wit John Coltrane & had an incredible career as a headline artist. (Check his record, Fly With The Wind). Bruce has even spoken of McCoy’s influence in interviews. Jazz sax player & Sting collaborator, Branford Marsalis has even featured Bruce on one of his records. So the song stood on its own, & got plenty mileage. I actually had not heard PAC’s Changes cause I wasn’t dialed into hip hop on that level. What I grabbed onto was mainly from videos. But as a musician, I can usually tell if a rap production song was sampled, because of the level of composition & musicianship. Example: Eminem’s Stan, which sampled British artist Dido. It was cool that he used her in his video. You might wanna check her original called, Thank You. which I heard from a soundtrack to a movie called Sliding Doors. There’s a whole other hook in hers because the portion for Em is just a loop of the verse. Anyway, cool reaction, good points. 👍🏾

Some people think the message of this song is that things are just the way it is. But it’s really the opposite, some miss the “but don’t you believe them”. The song acknowledges several examples of bigotry, in a negative light, being unemployed, children not allowed access, racial discrimination for jobs, and being poor. As an old man, I can say that all of these have diminished over the decades.

the thing about sampling, its generally done correctly with the permission of the artist if living or those who own the masters of those who have passed. what i wish is that when the sample is done if there were a clear path back so those who enjoyed the new tune with the sampled music (using this as an example) those who heard and loved the magnificent (IMHO) joint by Tupac could be encouraged to visit the originator of the beat in its original form. Bruce in this case was dropping bars about inequality back in the 80's , its still poignant today. people say the sharper the edge the deeper it cuts, i say the better the steel the longer it cuts, and Bruce was cutting edge close to 40 years back and still sharp and relevant. we are privileged to have him, and lessened by not having Tupac. RIP.
