24:05 interview really hits at the essence of Bruce's philosophy on martial arts. He was ahead of his times. And that is the crux of what many Bruce Lee critics can't just grasp. To them, Bruce would have been at least legitimate if he had one or more black belts or certificates. But Bruce is saying because man is a creative human being who is constantly learning and evolving, style is a crystalization and hindrance of this constant evolving. A black belt in whatever is at least a start but beyond that, it only will keep your pants up. Absolutely the words of an exceptionally intelligent martial artist. Too bad people even today still don't get it. He's even hated because of this.

I was once a Bruce Lee fan. From the time I was a boy. But looking at these video clips..e.g. Long Beach tournament. Has it dawned on any one else that Lee wasn't even a black belt. Didn't have a belt period. Nor was he a champion on any level. Just some very charismatic guy that talked a good talk. Did a few impressive moves people had never seen (e.g. 2 finger push-up,, did have "demonstration speed" (different to have speed in the ring/street). Notice the looks of skepticism on the guys watching. Didn't help Bruce was very cocky. But that was him. Part of his aura, charisma... Since when since Lee has any one been asked to do MA demos at any tournament who wasn't either a 2nd degree black belt or an ex-champion? Who's giving seminars today? Ex-world champions like Benny "the jet" Urquidez, Bill Wallace....etc. Usually guys with credentials. If not a champion or ex-chcamp..they have put in the time. Have at least been tested for certification (e.g. belts). It's like having some guy from the Fast/Furious crowd teach driving at a race track. :) Would you sign up to learn from Jimmy Chan or Mario Andretti? I wonder if the guys in the audience at the Ed Parker LB tournament had those looks on their faces because they knew his background. Or did they assume he was qualified? That Lee never finished studying any Kung Fu and didn't believe in competition. Hmmm...and he managed to WOOO Hollywood enough to have guys like Steve McQueen, James Coburn want him to teach them. HEHE! Did they also just assume Lee was "qualified"??
@Anderson: When u consider that the best of the best in his days came to train and learn from him... the Joe Lewis, chuck Norris... etc, who were champions themselves, then you have to realise just how good he was. Why would a champion go and learn from him if they shared your sentiment. Do some proper research before making such silly allegations.
He was a Demo guy and had lots of ideas about fighting. I would say he was more than your giving him credit for. You dont need to be a champ to train champs, you dont need to be a fighter to analyze and break down fights.
Chinese don't give belts. Training from Ip Man gives you instant cred, and he had already published a Kung Fu book. Also, never mind people's looks, he obviously impressed people in the know, and not just his charisma.
Out of those people Jhoon Rhee is probably the most legitimate owing to his kicking ability. Bruce allegedly taught Rhee a punch that's impossible to block and then supposedly Rhee showed it to Ali but nobody is using that punch today. Why? My guess is that it's a fabrication. According to rumors Ed Parker in his later years was not looking after himself and dodged challenges from a number of fighters and one time his wife begged some people not to upset him as she was afraid he would have a heart attack if he got physical. As he dodged challenges Parker allegedly threatened to beat up lower ranking students. I've also heard it claimed that the kempo taught to westerners like Parker was partially fraudulent and that the Asians who taught it to people like Parker were having a laugh at the westerner's experience by teaching them bastardized techniques. That would explain where those spin moves between strikes come from.
Thanks to this video anybody could see that so called fight- sports do not have much to do with either sport or fight. It so happened that being either a witness or participant of numerous real fights , I can immediately see that Bruce was great demonstrator , but his opponents were nothing real . His push that have sent people with their chair few feet backward i personally did quite a few times . It is real simple. You do it basically by turning your body together with your thighs , hips and torso and your hand moves forward like a ram straight forward pushing the man in front of you in the area of his middle. I had thrown a man almost twice my size 11 steps backward. i didn't think that it was something special , until I saw the video with Bruce . and everybody started howl with admiration. That's the power of movie !. ( and ignorance ). Of course the man in front of you can't expect nothing . You see it by the way his feet are . if the legs are horizontal , do it , and do it quickly and with power . You will be surprise by the effect. The guy will be flying , and flying like nothing could stop him . And eventually he will be on his back. Also sudden violent yell right in the middle of your calm talking , can cause that the man in front of you loses his conscience for a split of second . You will see it , because his eyes's lids will tremble. You will have opportunity to hit him right on the jaw's point and he will be knock down, sometimes for few minutes. The thing about Bruce Lee was that he was the first with real approach to fight on the screen . Today , thanks to him there are a lot people who are as good as he ever was. @ You are insulting me , and in a very next moment you are using the word "please". To me you sound like a person who had never had an encounter with a man. So few explanations are in due. First , the expression "almost twice my size" is a common figure of speech. There are not people 12 feet tall. Second : you should take a good look on so called three - inch punches by Bruce , and realize , that he withdraws his hand at least a foot and a half before the strike. Third : He does something very similar to what I had described , and he also targets the midsection of the person . Fourth , instead asking me stupidly to make a video for you , dumbass , ask one of your colleagues to try what I had described. Fifth : this is NOT "beating the fuck out of an opponents". The person falls , and then stands up - just like here , in this Lee's demo. One of them immediately after that pulled a knife on me. What stopped him , was not some idiotic action , as you can see in Bruce Lee movies - it was a simple trick : I have pulled two knives , each with different hand - and from different pockets of my jeans , that I unfortunately do not poses any more , so I can't proove it , dummy -- and opened both ( both knifes were one -hand- openers ). His reaction was formidable. He stopped , like he just petrified , and said : "Oh , you're good ". "Yes , I am good , so you better get the fuck outta here , before somebody calls the police" - was my answer. There was no movie camera around , you dumbass. Do your own movie ; I think you're capable of showing the world something really fantastic.
