Before his career in Hollywood began, Bruce Lee owned and operated a small kung-fu studio in Downtown Oakland. Lee brought together different styles of martial arts and opened his classes to western students, alarming the Bay Area's Chinese community. Lee was issued a now famous challenge and ultimatum by a representative, Wong Jak Man, who demanded that Lee stop teaching martial arts to Caucasians or close the school down. Lee settled the dispute in less than a minute, securing his right to teach whomever he pleased. As a result of this duel, Lee became committed to developing Jeet Kune Do, a.k.a. the Way of the Intercepting Fist - a form of fighting not bound by styles

Very pleased to see someone from Oakland is letting the world know about the impact the city has made to the world from music, sports and entertainment. The city of Oakland is a small city that made a very big impact on so many things and I am in the process of writing a book about the impact of Oakland. I will be discussing details about all the entertainers and sports legends I have grew up with from the 60's to the 90's from Gary Payton, MC Hammer, Jason Kidd, Too Short, Sheila E., Sway Calloway and the list goes on and on of the people who I am associated with. So watch out for the upcoming full length book about the city of Oakland and it's fascinating history including stories about Bruce Lee's impact to the city

Being raised in Oakland, I understood that his school was NOT in downtown, but up toward the hills on Telegraph Ave, pass McArthur Blvd. The school would later become a comic book store, and afterward it was torn down for a Mazda dealership.

Gosh, there is SO much more Lee history in Oakland than a 25 year old borrowed film clip and a 50 second intro. So WHERE was the dojo in Oakland? (Toyoya Dealership on Broadway) How about a photo or an interview with someone who went there or a picture of what's there now? Did Bruce live in Oakland? Where? (3039 Monticello Ave.) Is it still there? Do you have a photo? You should really do some research and re-edit this video. I think people visiting would be interested to see this stuff.

Thanks ! I'm glad to see there are others with my point of view. I've always thought Bruce Lee would have been better off portrayed as he really was....a human being ! It's still a fantastic story !

I don't hate Bruce Lee at all. I'm in awe of him. I'm a big fan. He was an amazing person and I just wish he would have been portrayed accurately instead of incorrectly. He had an incredible life without having to exaggerate it !

Wow, this shit is dope. Is this from a clip from a longer project about Bruce's Oakland Adventures? Or is this 2 min video the actual video. Either way, it's dope.

Linda was present at the kwoon where the fight took place, but she did not witness the actual fight. Bruce told George Lee to take Linda outside. There was NO CHALLENGE from Wong Jack Man, and the fight had NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE OR TEACHING NON-CHINESE. Wong Jack Man himself had Caucasian students as did several other schools at the time. The fight came about because Bruce Lee boasted at a demo that he could defeat anyone in the Bay Area. WJM simply took him up on that.

People that know that Wong Jack Man taught whites and blacks and also have emails from David Chin (an eye witness at the fight) stating that Wong Jack Man did not give up. One of Wong's best students is a blond blue eyed guy. Search EBM kung fu.

caldwell's version of this is known publicly. she has spread the notion that this fight is why he gave up wing chun. i wasn't there, but this seems unlikely. bruce offended ip man, by attempting to bribe Ip to teach him the entire system. he did not practice with the other wing chun stylists in the US at that time and his development in WC mainly consisted of ways to shortcut development in that style, according to glover's book. he was never able to surpass his seniors such as wong shun leung.

"my story" is based on a book written by ip chun called 116 wooden dummy techniques and from jesse glover's book from "wing chun to jeet kune do" and my opinion of bruce lee's chi sao and trapping hands footage is that it's fast. jesse glover learned wing chun/jun fan gung fu from bruce lee. unless you're calling him a liar. i don't know what you are getting at.

This is balony! Puffery for the Lee Estate. Bruce had his first Dojo (that looked like a business, IN BERKELEY, not Oakland. (2438 Sacramento St.). Other 'schools' may have claimed to 'adopt' his style, but he got NO funding from them unless he was there teaching.

these are the exact wors from bruce interwiew with blackbelt after the match:"I'd gotten into a fight in San Francisco with a Kung-Fu cat, and after a brief encounter the son-of-a-bitch started to run. I chased him and, like a fool, kept punching him behind his head and back. Soon my fists began to swell from hitting his hard head. Right then I realized Wing Chun was not too practical and began to alter my way of fighting

It's amazing how Linda Lee has cultivated and created Bruce Lee into the legend he is now and made millions of dollars in the process. Most witnesses recall the fight with Wong Jak Man as lasting twenty minutes and with no clear winner. Bruce found out he wasn't quite as good as he thought he was ! Bruce was a drug user, steroid user, womanizer, etc. He was human !
