Some interesting things talked about the legend BRUCE LEE and his teenage years with Wing Chun in Hong Kong!
*A note about this channel the lineage:
Sifu Nima King is the owner and team leader of Mindful Wing Chun, a CST Wing Chun school in Hong Kong with affiliations around the world. Mindful Wing Chun is wholeheartedly dedicated to passing on the internal wing chun method as passed down by Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin who was the longest serving student of Grandmaster Ip Man. Chu Shong Tin lived with Ip Man for 5 years (1950-1955) and was coined the title ' the king of siu nim tao' by his master Ip Man.
He was a legend in the world of Wing Chun (in particular the internal method of wing chun) and spent 64years passing it on full-time before he passed away in 2014. Nim King practiced under hin in Hong Kong for 9 years and established Mindful Wing Chun under CST's guidance. Nima is also on the board of Directors for the 'Chu Shong Tin Alumni' which is a group of senior students of CST that were hand picked by him to establish the Alumni and to uphold and continue his teachings and Wing Chun legacy after he passed away.
Grandmaster Chu Shong Tin was a very humble and low-key Wing Chun Master therefore its only after we began putting his videos online, that people started to hear about him. In fact, majority of the main Wing CHun teachers (of the Ip Man lineage) who began practice in the 50s and early 60s (apart of Leung Sheung and Lok Yiu) were trained by CST even-though they were Ip Man's students. This is due to CST being the most snr and main teacher of Ip Man's school in those days.
Nima was lucky to start his practice under CST in 2005 because that's when CST decided to change his teaching to all internal practice so that he can pass on "Nim Tao' and 'Nim Lik' (the mind power/energy cultivated through internal Wing Chun practice) to his students.
Nima, even though a non-chinese and much younger than the other students of CST, attained a high level of these final teachings. He now mainly teaches the seniors within this lineage and also travels around giving workshops and is working on an online program so that master CST's teaching can have a greater reach.

Bruce Lee must be learning also internal school, as muscular force is quite limited. Watch the way Bruce walked, you would see he used chi in all his limbs and main body.

Hi Cliff, thanks for your comment. I think he definitely had great coordination of his joints etc but I wouldnt call it 'internal' when compared to what we talk about in the CST Wing Chun method. Nonetheless Bruce was a legend and always will be...

He left after 3 days not because of ignorance, he was very smart. It was more likely from those days he reached an awakening and realized that he didnt need further instruction because hes had it in him all along. Those 3 days were his journey, thats how fast geniuses learn. Exponentially. Its just my theory though.

theres no doubt that Bruce wasnt ignorant and was very talented in every way especially as he got older. But, he certainly didn't have any internal ability and wasnt using Nim Tau. Perhaps he didnt want to put in the required time and training that it takes in SNT. And dont forget, ruce was merely a teenager during this period so he disnt yet have the knowledge that he has when he was older.

If possible can you show us a video of Chu Shong Tin talking about Yip Man chi sau abilities. That would be a very interesting video to see and here. That's if he ever talked about it.

He did talk about Ip Man but I don't think there is too many on camera. There are a few videos out there in which CST talks about how he asked Ip Man why the name of Wing Chun's 1st from is Siu Nim Tao and how Ip Man replied that its for cultivation of using 'Mind Power' to move rather than muscles... but not much else in which he talks about Ip on camera (from my memory anyway 0!

I love Bruce! He took the external to an extreme level. Dam good! But the internal trainings and mindset are the opposite. IMO Bruce would have to abandon and struggle much to switch to internal arts. But then again Bruce was laser focus and can probably did anything he wanted. My 2 cents from just my personal experiences.
@MindfulWingChun
@MindfulWingChun 5 лет назад
yup, totally agree. I'm sure Bruce would've moved to the internal side if he ever met someone with real abilities and showed him they could do something he couldn't. He was a perfectionist and wanted to be the best. Can you imagine if he did delve into the internal realm with his laser like focus?!!

What if... Bruce had spent more time with CST in HK,.... then the internal arts would made Bruce humble, peaceful, and jolly like CST :) lol... Then Bruce would never need to move to America, no Bruce's movies, the martial arts world as we know it today is greatly altered. Lol BTW, gm CST has the same smile/open mouth laugh as my grand father. I love watching CST tapes.

Great vid Nima thanks! Really a thrill to hear new stories about Bruce from the old timers who knew him. I became a fan of Bruce in 1967 because The Green Hornet was very popular in Australia amongst kids. I didnt know his name, he was just Kato to me and I hero worshipped him and imitated his moves. Of became an even bigger fan in the mid 70's as the Kung Fu craze hit Australia and never missed a.chance to see his movies over and over and over (and over😁no video back then). Particularily appreciate what you said about his philosophy - I feel that lots of what he said had come from Yip Man and his seniors in Wing Chun and he wrote those ideas down in English and Chinese. He even directly notes conversations he had with his Sifu Yip about Chi and Sau and letting the essential mind do the work. Cheers, really enjoy your videos.

Thanks for sharing David! And yeah I think the foundation of his understanding came from Wing Chun and it stayed that way till he passed.

I believe if Bruce Lee was more disciplined and kept with Yip Man's school, we probably would not have JKD today.

Enjoyed your chat Nima nice share. When it comes to Bruce Lee as so many people he inspired us all with his movies. He was an idol to follow and many tried to copy him. He was at the `right time and place` of a wave of change we needed. His movies were captivationing not just for his fighting action but as you said his `philosophy` the other side of the coin and changed the perception of asian culture to the west, popularising martial arts. He had the package, charisma, looks..as he said himself there were people faster than him he was smart enough to look for balance in development and yes if he had lived longer we would of seen another side of his in his movies, the internal aspects with more flexibility in expression but his life was cut short. There is the internal part to WC-VT Kung Fu and the external part but it is inspeparable! 100m sprint race is different to a 5000m race event practice for the two events is completely different, muscles, focus ect..Bruce Lee was a 100m sprinter v Tsui Shong Tin a 5000m runner. They develop in two different ways but both are runners which use the same mechanics but the focus is different. With track as an example Bruce would of turned to longer distances as he grew older, meaning more internal.

Thanks for the video! I would like to point out some information I gathered, that is contrary to what most people believe about Bruce Lee today. Many believe that Bruce totally abandoned all forms/tao lu/kata, but this is not true according to Sifu Lamar Davis of Hardcore Jeet Kune Do, who is certified under first generation students of Bruce from Seattle period to Los Angeles period, and he says that Siu/Sil Nim/Lim/Lum Tao was very important to Bruce, that he practiced it everyday, and he taught it throughout his teaching career and development of JKD.
@JustJayPs133
@JustJayPs133 5 лет назад
In fact, Siu Nim Tao is part of the JKD curriculum, though many of the JKD concepts people have removed it to follow their own path, but a true practitioner of JKD as taught by Bruce, should never abandon SNT or they will not have the proper mechanics or structure for JKD.
@MindfulWingChun

Excellent! thanks very much for sharing. Great to hear that he still kept a big aspect of Wing chun in JKD

@@MindfulWingChun when I viewed your video, I began to think about my training time with Sifu Lamar Davis, and thought, maybe CST had a larger impact on Bruce than anyone realized at the time. SNT, Chi Sau, Trapping Hands, WC vertical fist, and simultaneous striking and intercepting techniques are all there, just used from a different Bai Jong. And the way I was taught to take a proper JKD Bai Jong is to assume Yi Ji Kim Yeung Ma, then shift to your power side, rotate on the heel of what will be the lead leg, and rotate on the ball of the foot of the rear leg. From here, the lead hand is slightly lower that the rear hand, and from this position, except for footwork, most of the fighting techniques are WC. Sorry for being long winded. Thanks for all the videos on CST! They are extremely enlightening and have helped me tremendously in my personal training and journey.

Yo, thanks for the some interesting insights on Bruce Lee & Wing-Chun training. I think it has to be stated B. Lee grew up during to era when Wing-Chun was establishing it's self as a formidable fighting art in Hong Kong then. His Sifu's were all fighters. Techniques learned in classes were tested in the streets & improved by individuals. His foundation in Wing-Chun gave the tools to evolve & improve beyond most students, as in boxing & fencing influences,hence JKD (intercepting fist way), his own personal expression. He wasn't one of the top Wing-Chun Man then, so found ways to counter it or any other fighting arts for that matter. Bruce Lee's legacy was & is, Freedom of an individual expression, not to be bound by any established-system.
