As a young female (in high school when Born to Run came out) one of the things that struck me so profoundly in Bruce's music was his obvious respect for what might be termed the 'Feminine' -- it was subtle but unmissable and *so* unusual in music at that time (and still for that matter) -- he is, as people have so aptly remarked here, as good as it gets as far as a human being (and a resident of this peculiar country) is concerned -- a 'paragon' in every good sense of the word . . .

I loved his stories about his mom and aunts in Born to Run. his family was so lively. thinks the world of his family. that is why he is so grounded.

Hi John, Ellis Island gives several awards each year - sometimes to immigrants themselves, but often to notable descendants of Ellis Island immigrants. I can't speak for your immigrant ancestors, but I'm grateful that mine who came through Ellis Island from present-day Slovakia, Poland and Ukraine to work in the coal mines in PA had the courage to be "hopeful wanderers." I consider myself to be one of their many lucky beneficiaries!

Bruce doesn't smoke, doesn't do drugs, loves his mom, loving wife and great family man. He is humble, unassuming, writes great songs.. super rich. Did I left out any negatives about him?

Lovely to hear these personal stories. Perhaps especially resonates with me because my grand father too came to America through Ellis Island. He came from Norway and married my grandmother, conceived in Norway and born in America. My Mom's family was Scottish-Irish-Celtic in tradition although they came through Ellis Island long before, eventually moved from the East coast to California, where I was born as a fourth generation Californian. Either way, roots in America go back to Ellis Island on both sides of the family as I imagine is the case for many who through immigration, became Americans today.

I listened to (and watched) this video twice, but I didn't hear the reason why Springsteen was given the award. Furthermore, I think my most recent immigrant ancestors would take exception with his comments about immigration.
