Melissa/Missy and I were friends, in Leavenworth, when we were both 15. We were in the same performance group, the same youth group, and we were did "Godspell" together - she played lead-guitar, and I played the "floozy" character ... SO much fun! We knew, then, that she was going places. I got to see her again, 3 years ago, when she played at the Oregon State Fair ... I got to invite several of my children to meet back-stage, prior to the show. She's as real as she seems to be. Pure gold heart.
In 50 years time....some young kids will find this video and say "Holy shit.....that is good.." then they'll look for more of the same....this music never dies
Listening in 2018, brings nostalgia of youth back to me. Bruce had done a great show in Netflix where he filled in the context of these songs, The Boss and his songs never dies.
Bruce is a legend. We used to drive into the middle of no where and lie in a field and smoke a joint. We put his music up loud and watched the stars and all giggled. Good times. 20 odd years ago, when life was less complicated and we all had feelings.
I’m 22, and just got into Bruce Springsteen a month or two ago, and since I don’t think I’ve really listened to anything else. I can’t stop. I would have loved being around back when he was first out...my peers don’t know this magic
Carolina - start with his first album and work your way through them. Born to run is his masterpiece imho, one of the great albums of the 20th century. I have it on CD (remaster, original pressing), on LP (2 x 45 rpm half speed masters and a standard master) and love it to bits.
Carolina Grey - - - “ …Roll down the window And let the wind blow back your hair …” Yes. Yes. Enjoy that Ride Kiddo!! Hopefully he & the band come back on tour (after Broadway) . . . You get ur butt to a show . . . You willNot regret it. Ever. His concerts are full of Ɑℓℓ generations/ages-(down to 4-6 y.o.’s !) Hope ya have Fun. Peace. Love. And Rock’N’Roll !!
This is my favorite Bruce song of all time. I cannot tell you how many times I have put in on full blast with the liner notes and sung this song as loud as I could with tears streaming down my face. This is a song about youth and the great journey ahead but as an older man, it is also about the journey taken and just how special it is to have such a gorgeous song to bookend a life well lived.
Love that purist of pleasures on what is one of the most beautifully written songs of all time. My daughter came to me and said sing that lie lie song and hold me like a baby when she was 5 that song was The Boxer that was our lullaby so this made me smile like my face would split
What a version of one of the greatest story songs ever written, everyone should have at least one "roll down the window and let the wind blow back your hair" feeling in their lives x
There are a couple of even more, equally meaningful lines in this song. They paint a full canvas of the tremendious diverse and challenging life - the American/western life-style, a structure, I can still identify with today. They are about all the Drama, risks, courage, desires and determination, that does envelope itself tightly around the tough process of 'growing up and making a living in small-town US'. Its one more powerful ballade by Springsteen - - - texting about rather sad and desperate scenes, --> but in the end these songs rather seem to empower us more and accept that struggle and take up the challenge ... its ".. no time for loosers we pulling out to win!" It s indeed a song from a different time - no 'woke wise-cracking' or 'stylish Tik-Tok show off' come here into play. Rather leave me behind with a sad nostalgic feeling of the old times of 🎵"Those were the Days of '69 🎵". 😢
One of my favorite Springsteen songs and this duet is simply magic. The last time I saw Bruce in concert was in the Olympic Stadium in Berlin, Germany in 2016. Bruce came out alone with his acoustic guitar for the 2nd encore and played this song. Just Bruce and 65,000 fans, yet it felt like he was singing this song only to each an every one of us. It brought tears to my eyes.
My first "Bruce" concert was in Munich Germany, 1985 'BORN IN THE USA ' Tour...... Special Thanks to my Brother-in-law Barry for turning me on to BRUCE.... and taking me to my first Springsteen concert, for my Birthday....
Oh my god, how did I not know this existed??? One of Melissa's albums got me through a horrible breakup in 1991, and I saw Bruce (finally!) in 1985...these 2 together, and this song, oh my god, got chills 😍
I have a 7 yr old daughter. Her mother, my wife, sings to her each night as she falls asleep. My wife went on a business trip, so I was obviously put in charge of getting my daughter to bed. For three consecutive nights I softly sang "Thunder Road" in its entirety to my daughter as she slowly fell asleep. When my wife returned from her trip, the first morning back while eating breakfast, my wife asked my daughter "Did Daddy sing to you at night to help you fall asleep?" My daughter replied; "No". He read some poem about a girl named Mary who wanted to run away from home because she wasn't happy and thought it would be better somewhere else" A 7 yrs old's interpretation of "Thunder Road". Brought a tear to my eye, but that's exactly what it is ...poetry.
That's absolutely beautiful, thankyou for sharing! Like for listeners who know the words and sing along to it they might just be words, but your daughter is one of those amazing ones who really listens and tries to understand. She'll be a good leader one day.
Well I have been listening to Thunder Road for over 30 years and I still think its the greatest song ever written. Its going to be the last song before they close the lid!
Melissa tells a story about that line in one of her RU-vid videos. She specifically asked Bruce if she could sing that line as she had just come out and thought the line was symbolic. Bruce agreed, but then during the first take, which was perfect, she forgot to come in, so they had to re-record the song. If you watch the video, she almost forgets to come in again, and Bruce looks at her and smiles, and then she leans over and makes a comment about how she almost messed up again.
@@robbbbbie12 she actually forgets in this version too, but realizes it when he looks at her. She comes in late, and he holds the chord (I don’t know what note it is) until the word “climb”, where he changes notes again. I think the emphasis when he changes is his reaction a la “that’s it”. In my opinion, that actually makes this even better, because it shows two masters making music in real time. It’s those small hiccups that make live music awesome!
I remember watching this live and was so blown away. Felt like a very special moment in music history. I come back and rewatch it every few years and I am still blown away every time.
I saw him in a 3000 seat college gym when he was still largely unknown, and the place wasn't even half full. I still rank it among the 3 best concerts I ever saw.
"I saw my rock and roll past flash before my eyes. I saw something else: I saw rock and roll's future and its name is Bruce Springsteen" 1974 Jon Landau
This was an unbelievably AWESOME blend of two excellent voices / harmonies by two of the very best singers. Thank you for this amazing rendition of one of the best songs ever.
Me in May, having watched all the posts from his latest tour in Ireland and the U.K. This popped up after listening to Thunder Road played in Ireland. I’ve watched it before, so l know it’s a good mixture of voices. Bruce is such a kind and supportive man. But fast forward to 2012 in Hyde Park London and it is Bruce’s turn to be very excited to have HIS hero, Paul McCartney, on stage and singing with him!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Oh man, I hope this sent you checking out Melissa. She's incredible. Been a fan since her first album and she's so great live. A genuine storyteller and gifted performer.
My dad introduced me to Bruce’s music when I was young and it took me until I was about 12 to truly appreciate his music . I’m 19 now and I’m still listening.
So cute when Melissa leaves him hanging a beat late on “so Mary climb in” and he wants to laugh so hard but they have to finish. Classic. Love them both.
My girlfriend is due to have twins this coming spring...so weird that I’d stumble upon your comment at this time. Hope all is well with you and your family
Thanks for the love and support . I decided to take out time today out of my busy schedule to get close to my fans and know their thoughts towards my career and I came across you through my official RU-vid CHANNEL insight...
Saw Springsteen in concert in 1974 and have been a fan ever since. But this duet puts a whole new light on one of my favorite songs. Keep rockin on . Peace
I saw him in Mobile, AL, on his Born to Run tour. At 7:55, the band was on stage tuning up. At 8:01, Bruce came out, and they didn't stop for 4 hours. Best concert ever, and I've seen hundreds.
It is indeed a fabulous version of this song. I go back to it often. You have great taste, taping it off the TV back then and treasuring it. Etheridge and Springsteen are both great and their voices go together perfectly.
I am one massive goosebump. When Melissa sings"Mary climb in", damn! I feel so blessed to have Bruce on the planet at the same time as me. No other musician can move me as he does.
Bruce write songs with lyrics that have something to say about the human condition, about the roller coaster life can be, he’s more then a musician and troubadour he’s a poet although he’s to humble to admit, like Bob he also deserves a Nobel prize.
@@johnbarcza5945Absolutely floors me that he said he struggled until “Darkness”. How the hell didn’t that album transform him in to a fucking international superstar instantly? Just shows how good singer songwriters were in the 70’s.
I am 65 and have been a Springsteen France since I was 19 and am so happy to have come across this version with Melissa, pure gold. Thanks to you both x
amen to that jane griffiths, amazing rendition of TR here on acoustics... Mel..Bruce.. die-hard fan of both and find comfort in their music but this cut is something special...
love the guy. He's been with me during my entire adult life. And whenever he's in the Netherland, I'm there as well, no matter what. Bruce, for me you'r my friend. And I do think that most of your fans see you like that. Bless you
'I know it's late, we can make it if we run' I have loved Bruce's music for 40 years, especially this song, and this line has urged me forward whenever I thought I was too old for new adventures. It still does, and I'm 65. Thanks Bruce!
First of all I'm not looking to get into a conversation with a bunch of Millenials who seem to have nothing better to do than surf the internet looking for a conversation to hijack no matter who might be or have been involved and I'm getting tired of getting dragged back in to month or older conversations that I made a comment in and then forgot about because it wasn't all that important to me that I care about and I really am getting tired of you do nothing Millenials intruding into my life like you have a right to which I'm here to tell you that you don't have the right to enter into my life without my permission and if you don't understand why then maybe I'll start going off on any one of you who thinks you do and I promise you I will have balls enough to tell you exactly how I feel about you and your rudeness in no uncertain terms
Two of the worlds greatest talents, on the stage together. This is the ROCK Mecca. I've watched it a thousand times and hope to live to watch it a thousand more.
