25th ANNIVERSARY ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME CONCERT Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band w.Tom Morello - Ghost of Tom Joad - Madison Square Garden, NYC - 2009/10/29&30
Bruce could be the lead guitarist in most groups, Tom teases him early on, I love Nils in oz 2014 but what the beep is Tom doing, this is burn the house down stuff. This will be played on my send off. Amazing
In his Masterclass, Tom Morello talks about the construction of this solo, and how he kept it a secret during soundcheck by 'Chuck Berrying' his way through an imposter solo. Bruce also changed the key on Tom at the very last minute, and he was having difficulty singing it, and he didn't have time to transcribe the chords, which is why you see him hold back on the guitar until the solos. Tom puts every ounce of passion he has for social change into that solo. It makes you want to weep, and I actually did.
@David McGivern The only people who would hate me are people I've wronged. I am not a corporate executive, nor am I a corrupt politician, or a power-tripping police officer. So nah.
Try not to focus on negative things. There is a motorcycle thingy people called " target fixation ". You run into whatever you looking at while riding a motorcycle. I mean, do not pay attention to negativity. It will steer you into itself. Cheers o/
Probably because they don't like the political sentiment. However, as much as I love Bruce, Tom, and this performance, there may be another reason. Tom's solo is recycled/repurposed for this song. He originally did it with Street Sweeper Social Club. If I'm not mistaken, I have it saved on my computer somewhere. Footage that I actually filmed myself.
God dammit!!! I've watched this approximately 85 times now over the years and EVERY time it just gets better and better!!! I LOVE TOM MORELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First time ive seen it. I just watched it twice. Bruce springsteen and tom morello synching up near the end with the rest of the band was melting butter.
This is still today unsurpassed musical perfection. The music, the sounds, the lyrics, the guitars, the band, the arrangement, the intensity, the sentiment of the song, the relevance, the joy, the appreciation of everyone, the playing together, the solos - everything about this is absolute perfection. Every time I watch this and listen to it - I am blown away. Incredible.
And now I'crying like an idiot unable to say why. Had a swiiss boyfriend who looks like the Boss. He had his own band and sang and played his music 🎸🤟🏼♠️🤠🎼🎸🇨🇭🇫🇷☘️🌺😊
Hendrix, Van Halen, Kirk Hammett Dimebag Darrell and Tom Morello are the top 5 greatest guitarists of all time! They took the instrument and made it into something new!!
Zero Verrin me too.first time I heard this I immediately replayed this solo twice much to the annoyance of my son who doesn't appreciate just how good this is.
It's amazing how Bruce pays attention to the poor, to the people who found themselves in damn tragic social situation. He keeps on singing about them, helps in charity though he could forget about how it is to be poor. He never was poor indeed. But he understands. Great man.
Of course he knows what it was like to struggle with money. If Born To Run (the album) hadn't been a success the record company would have dropped him.
@@sean79779If he was a republican he would pay less tax, but he is a democratic. So he puts the working class’ financial interests ahead of his own. Sounds like a good person.
Morello fucking killed that. This dude never ceases to amaze me. That song was made 100x better with the new spin on it and that was an impossible task to take on. Thank god Bruce still remains relevant enough to appreciate the talent of a guitar genius like Tom Morello
I have absolutely no idea how people survive on the street. I had one of the most forgiving homeless experiences of anyone on the planet - temperature rarely below 10 deg C, food most days, very little aggression from other homeless people and ready access to clean water - but after 2 weeks of that I wanted to end my life. My brother reasoned that it might just scare me away from a pattern of self-destructive behaviour, and he was right, at least in the short term. If I ever find myself back in that park, it'll be the last night of my life. Great song, but its a lot more than just words for me now, and that's an admission I never thought I'd have to make. When you get into the comfortable bed tonight, be thankful - I certainly am.
Some of us do understand. I have been there myself and it i appreciate the comfort of a warm, cozy home ten fold these days. Have to be thankful because there are people who have been out there so long that a normal existence is what seems to be miles away. Sleep at peace people and just know the only between you and them that’s different is a few short circumstances in the left or right. Imagine if it was all taken from you tomorrow and it were up to you to keep your family alive and well. Have to appreciate what we have each day..
In my opinion , one of the three best solos in the history of music. " Confortably numb " ( David Gilmour ), " Stairway to heaven " (Jimmy Page ), " The ghost of Tom Joad " ( Bruce Springsteen & Tom Morello ). Let each one put in the order they want . Masterpiece !!!!!
Good list but hard to limit to just 3!! Agree on the Skynard and Mark Knopfler suggestions. And you have to include Hendrix - take your pick, Red House for example. Would you really leave off BB King (Sweet Little Angel for example) and Buddy Guy (so many)? And would it be crazy to mention Angus Young on Let There Be Rock?
Another guy who isn't a super-skilled guitarist but pours his entire soul into his playing is Neil Young. That'll always sound better to me than some mindless shredding, no matter how technical and complex it might be.
The passion this version releases is just amazing. That passion my mom had. The views expressed in this song she bought 100%. I lost her to MS September 6. This is for you mom! We won't give up!! I love and miss you! RIP.
I'm just wondering, when you were homeless did people genuinely want to help you out? I hope so, and I hope you are in a better place now, greetings from Australia.
I was living in straight poverty and people wanted to turn their back on me. One time I was stiffed for $180.00 on a paycheck. Started to run out of money and I needed about $2.50 to get enough money to buy a bottle of insulin for a family member. Three hours later a guy gave me the money. Had no running car and had to ride a bike for over two miles to get insulin. The cashier who saw me regularly and liked me looked at me like I was a criminal drug addict all of a sudden. About 8 months later, I landed a good paying job, went back in and she was treating me good again, because I wasn't sweaty from riding miles on a bike in the heat. I will never forgive those people, ever. For all the people I gave money and animals I helped, if I see those people stuck on the side of the road, I will leave them for dead.
I understand you've been through extremely tough times but I think forgiveness is a greater retaliation as opposed to what you've mentioned in your last line. Wish you the best.
One of the best rock songs ever!!! This is why we don't have original rock songs no more and the music industry promotes shit like r & b, gangsta hip hop, dance and pop music. The establishment doesn't want songs like this one since it is too dangerous for them. Thanx Bruce and Tom from Greece for a great performance and great lyrics
Brilliant performance! It doesn't get better than that. Not much has changed in the USA since John Steinbeck wrote the book "Grapes of Wrath" in 1939, from which came the character, "Tom Joad". This was a fantastic tribute from a great writer and two great rockers! Thank you.
You gotta love the way Bruce handles that band, Morello included. After they all come down on that final E minor, he tells Tom to play some more, to which he complies with a last fill and then you can see Bruce saying "There you go". He is really The Boss
I've criticized Springsteen for a lot of things. But, no criticism this time. This is one of the best live performances I've watched in my life .... of anyone. And, the Ghost of Tom Joad is one of the best songs he's ever written.
I agree Apocalypse Plough. In fact, the Ghost Of Tom Joad turned me around on Springsteen pretty much. I opened up to his music a lot after I first heard it.
+Marc Joosten I hope everyone complaining realize who Tom Joad is. Grapes Of Wrath Tom Joad! Both Bruce and Tom are passionate about the Homeless Problem facing our Great Nation and the shrinking middle class. They are both PHENOMENAL GUITARISTS and If I have to tell anyone what a Masterful Storyteller Bruce is, I give up!
Michael Morrell HAHA! How does anyone not get that? Bruce feels so strongly, well he and Tom both, about the increasing plight of homeless people in this once great country! Listen to some of his live performances and he'll tell you about it. Michael you get it!
Look at Bruce and Tom together.... Its absolute beautiful for my ears to listen to this... Im very thankful for this awsome performance of both of them❤
Tom is such a gifted guitar player, and this solo is one for the ages. That it runs ice cold down my spine, and only have goose bumps. I could listen to the solo all day! 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
i just love this performance. i love how in tom's solo that he keeps true to who he is as a guitarist. that was vintage tom morello with his out of this world sound he creates with his guitar. so cool to watch.
Morello and Springsteen should start a side project. They both have sang about the everyman their entire music career. The government that has failed the average American. And both are very political. "Morello-Springsteen, LIVE and in CONCERT" I'd buy that ticket.
voting for Chump = national suicide habitual state of a Chump supporter = emotional ignorance your comment = siding with your own oppressors Why would you do that??
Sophie -Grace whether you voted for Clinton or Trump shit is gonna hit the fan and we can't do anything about it. BLM,KKK,Antifa and the patriots are gonna fight each other along with the government declaring martial law because of the pointless violence
Best live guitar solos of all time. 1.Pink floyd comfortably numb Pulse 2.Dire straits sultans of swing alchemy live 3.Bruce sprinsteen tom morello ghost of tom joad live.
Yes, this is absolutely perfection in performance of both Bruce and Tom, it is totally amazing. This is both their performance of their life. This is 11 out of 10
I was homeless and squatting in an old crumbling shed with no heat during a really rough winter when I fell in love with this song. I'd heard the Rage version before as a kid but not the original. Plus I didnt get it as a kid either. You have to have been there to fully feel the impact of this song. It makes me choke up even now.
Michael ---- Springsteen's backing band is called The Silver Bullet Band, whose members were formerly part of The Steve Miller Band. The original name of Springsteen's Silver Bullet Band was "The Heartbreakers," but another band copyrighted that name. After having lost out on The Heartbreakers name, they initially tried calling themselves The Blackhearts, only to find out that someone else had that name. Soon after, they finally settled on the name "The Pretenders," which Clarence Clemmons said was in honor of the Jackson Browne song of the same name. When they arrived at the Copyright Office to make it official, they saw Chrissy Hynde leaving. They stopped her and was shooting the shit and smoking cigarettes when Roy Bittan says, "By the way Chrissy, what are you doing down here at the New Jersey Copyright Office? I thought you lived in New York." She says, "I know somebody in here, and I Copyrighted my new band name. We'll be known as Pretenders, or 'The Pretenders.'" At that, Danny Federici stood up and took a swing at Chrissy. Luckily, she ducked. Danny reared back for another try, and had to be restrained by Max and Little Steven. They left and regrouped at an abandoned beach house, brainstormed, and came up with The Silver Bullet Band, and the rest is history.
@@wildmercuryfilms Yeah. Seger is the silver bullet band. Springsteen is the E Street band. Conan obriens first late night show host on nbc had max (Weinberg?) leading his house band. That's max sitting at the drums.
