This was recoded on cassette as demo with Born In USA demos. The demos had a stark quality the band recordings didn’t capture so he released the demo that he had in shirt pocket for weeks with no case.
When he mentioned that they blew up the chicken man in his house he’s talking about the murder of Phillip “ the chicken man ” Testa the former boss of the Philadelphia crime family or the Philadelphia sicillian mafia, his death led to a mob war in Philly and Atlantic that would lead to dozen of death.
This and the entire Nebraska album that is on were recorded on I think and 8 track in Bruce's house. Essentially he made a demo at home and after some sessions with the band decided to release the demo as the album.
This IA a great song!! I prefer a live version with the E Street Band. Look it up there are plenty on RU-vid. Its also been covered by a number of other well known artists.
