I saw them in Atlanta a mere three months after this show. Do this day, the single greatest concert I've ever seen. I just turned 18 a week earlier, and I was RIPE for it!

The Band has always been Great! Later additions have added to an already great Core In particular, Nils brought his own Style to the Guitar! He did not try to replace Stevie! When Stevie rejoined - they were two great professionals who worked off each other very well! The ability to evolve is the hallmark of The E Street Band!

@@billorlando Nils was an upgrade IMO. Much better guitarist, with an interesting fingerpicking style.

He's never had a bad lineup, but this one's the one for me also.

Once saw Bruce in Saginaw ; missed the show in Detroit Labour Day weekend 78: the Arena held 5,000 + , but believe it or not there were 2,000 people; sat very close to Clarence,,,amazing show , , , Best part Bruce played at least 4+ hrs. Before the encores the band was asking" what next" how about Jail house Rock ," then the Detroit Medley,,, oh yeah the ticket was $6.50.

My wife wanted to see Bruce for her 60th. Third show at the Meadowlands last week! I have no words to describe it! Simply amazing!

Congratulations. In 1980 I was only ten year old. I met Bruce in 1983 now with 50 years I am still an unconditional fan of Bruce. There is always a Bruce song that cheers me up in every moment of my life, even the bad ones.there are many concerts lived and it is getting better.

Saw him at least six times during that period and agree. I saw him on this tour in L.A. and he was on fire. Also got to see him in small venues during that time, at Princeton and Georgetown Universities.

He was the best I’d ever seen in 78 when I saw three Darkness shows. But at my 64th show in 2016 he was still better than anyone else, with the possible exception of September 30, 1978, when I saw a concert at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. Cause whoever we are, whatever our connections, resources, or anything else, there is one way we’re all equal. We can only see Bruce Springsteen the first time once, and that concert was it for me. I left the Fox thinking, *knowing*, that I had just experienced the greatest rock & roll that had ever been or was ever likely to be. Ten days short of 43 years later I haven’t for a moment thought otherwise.

Around the time that 'Dancing In the Dark' was released and the 'Born In the USA' album was starting to take over the world, a friend of mine lent me his cassette copy of The River. For the first couple of weeks I only listened to 'Hungry Heart' over and over and over. A few weeks later I was in a Waldenbooks, and I saw a paperback about Bruce. Can't remember the name of it, but there was a concert photo in which Nils is doing a somersault, and another one with him wearing this outrageously enormous, foam 10-gallon hat. The caption said something along the lines of "Bruce and Nils" rock out to Cadillac Ranch." I thought to myself, "Istn that song on the 1st side of the 2nd cassette of 'The River?' I should give it a listen. I went home, plugged in cassette #2, fast-forwarded to the 2nd song. I heard that song for the first time, and I was gob smacked. Hooked. And I've never looked back.

That's awesome. My dad loved music too and certain songs bring tears to my eyes remembering him. Her died from cancer in October of 2011....just after the World Trade Center attack. A few years later my husband bought me the Green Day American Idiot CD. I was backing out of my driveway the very first time I heard "Wake Me Up When September En9ds" ..... i didn't even make it to the road before I started crying! I have always loved the way Bruce Springsteen can write songs that are both uplifting AND so sad at the same time! His songs really paint vivid pictures and make you think. My favorite album of his is "Nebraska" ......talk about tear jerkers 👀. If a person can listen to that album without tearing up or downright boo hooing there's something wrong with them! Once I had "My Hometown" playing on my car stereo. My sister was riding with me and we were in our hometown driving around the neighborhood and things kept playing into the song.....a kid chasing a ball, the highschool band practicing, a dog playing fetch and more. We were living a music video! We both just sat quietly and took it all in. It was amazing! Oh, and my dad's name was Bruce! Anyway, Springsteen, Steve and Clarence were/are phenomenal ❤

I was there in Tempe - maybe 30 years old. That was the second time I saw the E Street Band. Saw then a bunch more since then. But if I have to remember Bruce one way, that's the way I want to remember him. Philip

Saw this tour in Los Angeles and only one more time in 2009. My wife and I had hoped to see his planned tour for the album last year but damn covid stopped all of that. I hope he can tour at least one more time, he's getting up there.

Yes. It seemed they had something to prove during "The River" tour. I don't think I've seen the band more in tune with one another. I saw them twice in Los Angeles during this tour and the performances were truly transcendental. Bruce and the boys played for about 4 hrs. each concert. Time went by so fast it seemed like it was only about 45 minutes each concert.

I saw them in '76, '78, '80, '84 and '88. When I watch these clips from 1980, what hits me is that they were recorded just before John Lennon was murdered. That was a watershed moment, one that sent us reeling. I already had tickets to see Bruce and the E Street Band a few days later at the Hartford Civic Center, and all I could wish was that Bruce would somehow manage to bring us together and give us the strength to move forward. He did all that and more.

...and how poignant that Lennon was full of praise for "Hungry Heart" in an interview only hours before his death.

I agree, The River tour is peak E Street Band for me! I don't think I've ever seen a bad performance from them, but there's something about this era

Without doubt this was their peak the top of the world n they had swagger. Finally financially stable n in for life with Columbia after this ESB masterpiece The River album. U could see it. This is the tour that started the legend the marathon shows n setlists. The River era for me will always not just be their peak but their Pop music peak as in Disc 2 of Tracks. The River had the best material.

I was there the second night. It was the greatest show I have ever seen. He made that giant stadium seem intimate. There are a few bands I like better but not live. I used to usher at concerts and then worked for a music distributor where I got free tickets to almost every show I wanted to see. Not bragging. Just saying I've seen lots of shows in my life and that was the best.

I have experienced somewhere around 15 if not more Springsteen concerts over the last 39 years including The RIver tour at MSG in NYC, tehtour which this video came from .

I saw Bruce in August 1978 at the Philly Spectrum. Gary Busey, fresh off his starring role in "The Buddy Holly Story", joined the band to open the second encore with "Rave On".

You brought tears to my eyes.I thought of Buddy Holly during the song when Bruce did that little hiccup in his voice and I think again when he was soloing. I had an emotional upheaval also at the point in the song where all the instruments come back in at once. They went from nothing there at all to ROCKIN FULL TILT in that instant and it just blew me away.

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band does a very good version of this as well. It's just a touch slower and the guitar isn't as raunchy, no sax....but the bassline is more prominent and they added harmonica. Some nice twangy guitar too.

straycatttt I was at the Spectrum concert as well. Near the end, 2 guys jumped up in the stage to get near Bruce, and I remember thinking at the time that if they meant to harm Bruce, they could have done so right there. After the concert, driving back home to Jersey, the radio is reporting the shocking news of the shoring of John Lennon. From sheer bliss to pure shock.

S Romeri, Bruce may have played four or five Spectrum shows that week. I may have been at the one the night before the Lennon assassination. The night after your concert, Bruce paid tribute to Lennon by opening with “Twist and Shout.”
