I don't know why people are shitting on this. There are few people more qualified to cover The Clash than Springsteen. He's a kindred spirit, and this was a great cover. Good on you Bruce!
Geoff Chappell to be fair to Bruce. He tried and didn’t really succeed. A good attempt though. By his band Absolutely nobody is qualified to cover joe strummer’s voice. The American city’s mentioned in Springsteen’s version is dire. And I am not British. ,, but it keeps the brilliant clash fresh in the history of one of the most unique bands ever
God Bless Joe Strummer .... The Clash the greatest band ever to step foot on the shit hole of a planet ... Also a beautiful version by the boss .. cheers Bruce
Love when Tom Morello joins him in Jam. Tom really rocked it out with Bruce on... Shoot, years adding up now. He rocks with Bruce on sum great songs. My memory failing me. I'm trying to pull the song out my head, but it's coming out, Youngstown, but it's another I was thinking of. But Tom just shredded it on this one song I can't name, but listened to 1000x easy. 🤕
@@So_gnarly all the presidents are shit and i say use the tools of power but never owe them anything and put them down when you finish what you picked them up to do.
Just stumbled upon this. A wonderful version of a classic song. As others have noted, a great deal of common ground exists between Bruce and the Clash. Good stuff.
The Clash has always been an inspirational Band. For Springsteen he has always been an admire of The Clash since their beginnings, along with Dylan and Marley. It says a lot on his part to commemorate Strummer as a respectable artist and his message concerning the common man, which Springsteen has always expressed in his music.
@@PMurray2694 Then people that wrote music with a message obviously intended it to be listened to by dorks that support the message. Why support an artist if you don't support the message?
This is a fantastic cover Bruce and Tom are perfect together for a tune like this the clash still is one of my favorite bands they were amazing and there music is and always will be relevant this a phenomenal show
haven't really had too much interaction with Bruce's music for many years, but I got to say...... this was pretty damn good!! lots of respect to him for knowing the importance of this song in rock history.
Big clash fan - saw them when I was 15, meet Joe also - happy the boss even knows the song let alone wants to play it - the lyrics still stand the test of time.
I m a massive Springsteen fan and a fan of the Clash, I would not think The Clash would be an obvious choice of styles for Bruce, but Godamn he and Morello and co have nailed one of the great Clash songs. He just gets better!!!
I’m 48. Never cared for Springsteen as a teenage punk rocker musician. At 19, in 1990, was getting more engulfed by music and appreciative of every genre, At that time I had thought to myself, Springsteen is the American version of Joe, in that they wrote story telling, sometimes cautionary or introspective songs from the working class perspective. Both honourable icons, plus Bruce should totally do a clash reunion tribute! 🤘
So good! I bet his fans were like what the fuck is this? Still the hunt continues for a good quality live version of the Clash doing this. Cheers Bruce!
Bruce is 65 here. Joe was 27 and Mick was 24 when London Calling was released. You're not going to match the Clash in their prime, but at 65 Springsteen brought enough anger and power to win the Clash's approval.
To paraphrase Bruce in an interview he gave: the war on poverty is a much nobler cause than the war on the war on poverty. He's a true believer and a mensch.
I first saw Bruce Halloween night in Los Angeles 1980. I was 13. In 1982, I first saw The Clash at the Hollywood Palladium. Within two years of each other I was blessed to see perhaps the two best shows ive ever had the pleasure and good fortune to get to go to. Both shows I went with my older brother. I was 13, then 15. He was 18, then 20. Lol It went Butch you wanna go? Yeh but I got school and all (he was Valedictorian of his high school graduating class in 1980. Then went on to Yale Law. We were raised by our grandparents because our mother was mentally challenged. So it was uo to me, the younger brother ( think Wally and The Beaver in Leave it to Beaver). I would explain to grandpa. He'd confirm if my brother really wanted to go or was this some scheme of mine? Lol Once my brother confirmed, yes he wanted to go also, but had no time to wait in line like you had to back then. Grandpa would hand me the exact amount for the two tickets. I'd go all night and wait in line. My grandpa would get up every few hours at my grandma's insistence to check on me, a kid in line with all the teens and adults. He'd see I was not only fine, but often holding court as usually the youngest there all night. Lol I'd get the duckets and my life would be irrevocably changed. C'mon The Clash and Bruce Springsteen in a two year period. At the peak of their respective powers. Long live Rock!!
This song is non-stop adrenalized, focused, powerful, anger! Any daunting or seemingly insurmountable task you must complete...this song will be your battle cry to help push you through to the end!
Much better than the london calling cover, Bruce's voice suits these songs, i like bands that make covers their own, not covering them exactly as the original, yeah, really enjoyed it.
The Clash THE ONLY BAND THAT MATTERS!!! Even Bruce and Tom know that!!! ✊❤️❤️✊ RIP JOE!! We love and miss you dearly!! ✊😢❤️😢✊ Edit: Rage Against the Machine does a live cover of White Riot. Check it out!
I recall reading that Joe Strummer was a fan of Bruce and the e-street band, saw them around 74-75 in London and was inspired. Urban rock and roll with political angst. The Clash were Londoners, younger and thrasher but I get it.
Springsteen played Hammersmith Odeon in '74(?). Strummer and many of his contemporaries attended, and drew inspiration,. This cover is a bit 'Big Band', but that's how Springsteen rolls.
When Springsteen and co' call out the big US cities when they do the 'Working Hard in Tampa', 'Working Hard in Fort Worth' etc...that kinda brought a lump to my throat. You can hear the crowd audibly lift as people animate when their city or area is called out. In the UK we don't have that level of love, or a strong enough cultural identity, to be able to do that sort of thing; we're steeped in shame, uncertainty and low confidence when it comes to any celebration of where we're from and I think that's a pity.
One of my favourite clash songs , a nice tribute to joe certainly , Not too bad and a good attempt , but not a patch on joe strummer & the clash the sheer. Passion and anger could never be matched by anyone other than the clash. Fact
