There was a big high wall there, that tried to stop me. It was painted, said "private property". But on the back side, it didn't say anything. This land was made for you and me.
This era was some the best connection he had to the people. It was a time when Bruce could do no wrong. It was all about the people. He was all about the music, then. idk why musicians feel the need to get political and overnight ruin every perception people have for them prior to that time... a great cover song
With all my heart, and on behalf of every person from Europe who set foot on these shores beginning so long ago, I ask your forgiveness for what was done. I ask your forgiveness for the slaughter of 120 million human souls over the centuries. I ask your forgiveness for the resulting dissolution of an entire people. I ask your forgiveness for usurpation of a land cared for by your ancestors for more than ten millennia. Only love and compassion live in my heart for all, especially those wronged.

I'm a young man who had a child hood in Scotland. It was a booming industrial city until the recession hit my family really hard, it left almost everyone unemployed... But we didn't give up we stood together and fought on.. I'm 31 years old now and I'm still fighting for our jobs, one day it may it may happen just don't give up the fight ✊🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
People need to understand Springsteen. The vast majority of his work is fast songs and he performs to this day with 20 gallons of gas in his tank but the message has been the same from day 1: "This country is broken and broken still, real working people doing their best have real hard times and it's about time everyone in this nation recognized out national reality and did something about it" Seriously. His message has always been the same. And it's the truth. Our politicians can't fix us they are corrupt as fuck don't pardon my french. What does a working man do when his house is broken? He fixes it, finds a way. Well our collective house is America boys and girls. About time the down and out got tired of all the money and clout, and started thinking about how to fix the situation without doubt. The big boss doesn't fix the problem, the common joe does. Trust in your self. Trump and Hillary are not messiahs, do not wait to be saved by false prophets. You are responsible for YOU and YOUR loved ones. Roll up your sleeves women and men, there's good work that must be done. Let's get to fixing.
Indeed. Springsteen kept his politics close to the vest in his early years, but during the Reagan era he came out as a dyed-in-the-wool liberal, and boilerplate canting about the working class will not change that. He knows where the jackals are, and they certainly are not on the left. But some people just love to be stomped into the dirt so long as they can have their sad little fantasies about someday being rich. It's how the rich keep their feet on real people's necks.
Po-lease. Springsteen is a limo-liberal. He has always been a leftist - he played at the No-Nukes shows in the 70's (and rightly so). He's never been all that bright.
This song should be our national anthem. It wasn't until the new deal that the working class had a shot at a good quality of life. That's what this song is about. Social programs are American as apple pie. I'm all for them if they work.
NO IT SHOULDN'T!!! "This Land is Your Land" is communist-inspired. It dispels the notion of private property; Guthrie, Seeger, the Weavers an many more were all full-on communists or sympathizers, like much of Hollywood became in the 50's. The Democrats/liberals are either too dumb to realize this or, more likely, they agree with the notion of this Marxist song.
I've heard almost all the versions of different singers, but Bruce's has no comparison, nobody transmits as much feeling as he does. Greetings from Perú.
Hello fellow American and greeting from Pittsburgh PA - stay free to be free as all of us Americans are and always will be. One day I was reminded of what America is while living in Mexico when a resident of Tehuacan asked me where I was from and I said "America" and he said so am I - think broadly about the meaning of America, that's the best way I learned.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know a tool to log back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me.
Wow after hearing many versions of this song I thought no one can best Woody's version, don't get me wrong he'll always be the original writer of this song but I have to say just wow, this is by far the best version of this song, Bruce has really outdone himself, well done Bruce and thank you for bringing this beautiful song to all of us. Best wishes to all American people, from Israel ;).
There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me. The sign was painted, said 'Private Property.' But on the backside, it didn't say nothing. This land was made for you and me."
every word of the original woody Guthrie song should be included as a tribute to it's perfection. same goes for our Constitution. love Springsteen but his failure to include this verse shows he's incompetent in covering this song. the original is perfect. don't fuck with it
jonw12 in 1985 that verse was not known. It wasn't released until the late 90s when a Smithsonian employee was copying the original record to digital. I guarantee you Bruce would have included it if he knew it
Killjoy : You are correct, sir. An exception to the Cabaret of the Deluded that populate most of this page. THIS LAND is a communist diatribe, aimed at those with non-rational tendencies
Lovely tribute to a truly wonderful human being, from a talented and caring guy. I'm from the 51st state and will never forget Bruce's goodwill gesture to the striking miners in the 80's. Thatcher's govt. even condemned him in parliament
Just two days ago, I pulled back to my home in Toronto after driving 10,000 kilometres to British Columbia, across Canada/United States. This trans-continental road trip was one I had always dreamed of and Woody Guthrie, and all the versions of his iconic song, were just paving the way for so many travels, and impressions, and memories. It was an epic journey for which I will am eternally grateful. "This land is your land, this land is my land." No words ring truer. Thank you, Woody, and all who have followed in your footsteps to sing these words.
As a first generation American this song is very emotional to me. My grandfather brought his family(including my father) to this country with almost no money in hopes of a better life and education. Now I am in college and have high ambitions. The American dream is surely still alive.
See the Obama inauguration video with Pete Seeger at 90, so backed up by his own grandson, Springsteen, and a youth chorus. Seeger lost his rousing vocals, but he inserted more lyrics from Woody Guthrie.
Maybe you've been working as hard as you're able, But you've just got crumbs from the rich man's table, And maybe you're thinking, was it truth or fable, That this land was made for you and me.
Fact remains ; this world WAS made for you and me and all of us. Question remains; how do we stop the slavery and give each living soul an equal share.
@@Khultan There's always one of you idiots polluting otherwise fine threads with your paranoid, hate and fear generated rubbish. Just a heads up, Springsteen loathes your brand of politics. His is a big hearted, strong and generous nation. yours, not so much.
Rock on Bruce!!! I'm a disabled veteran who still believes in those words!!! I could not have said those words any better than you sung them!!! Thank You!!!
I would rather be ruled by art, then anything else a the world has to offer. Yes art and porn. I feel that art done well connects to a innate sense of all that is right and well within us.
@@idicula1979 What was truly powerful were how that generation handled adversity during the depression. There was no Social Security back then. But listen to them.
Quindoger, I am appalled. Maybe the Founding Fathers believed in God, but one reason this country actually exists is because they wanted freedom of religion, which is a right GUARANTEED in the Constitution. Do you not think people of other religions would be offended by your remark about only Christianity in the US? Those soldiers on D Day just happened to believe in a god.
This Land Is Your Land Words and Music by Woody Guthrie This land is your land This land is my land From California to the New York island; From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and Me. As I was walking that ribbon of highway, I saw above me that endless skyway: I saw below me that golden valley: This land was made for you and me. I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts; And all around me a voice was sounding: This land was made for you and me. When the sun came shining, and I was strolling, And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling, As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting: This land was made for you and me. As I went walking I saw a sign there And on the sign it said "No Trespassing." But on the other side it didn't say nothing, That side was made for you and me. In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people, By the relief office I seen my people; As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking Is this land made for you and me? Nobody living can ever stop me, As I go walking that freedom highway; Nobody living can ever make me turn back This land was made for you and me.
Thank you for posting this. I wanted my son to hear the REAL version of the song, and to understand EXACTLY what it is about. He asked me why the verse about the relief office gets left out in school. I replied "Because it's not "nice".
a great version of a great song. almost had me in tears thinking about how far we have fallen from this ideal. it also occurred to me that most of the people in the audience had probably never heard the full song. All Woody was trying to say is that everyone deserves to share in America's riches, be they monetary or natural. Nothing wrong with that idea. In fact, that is part of the philosophy behind the idea of the original settlers of this country
I believe this song is PRECISELY the OPPOSITE of what you say here. It's about the VALUE that ALL PEOPLE belong to the family of man. ALL people. Not ""our own people".
Well I rode that ribbon highway I saw above me the endless sky I saw below me the golden valley This land was made for you and me I've roamed and rambled and followed my footsteps Through the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts And all around me a voice was calling This land was made for you and me This land is your land This land is my land From California To the New York island From the Redwood Forest To the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and me Well the sun came shining and I was strolling Through wheat fields waving and dust clouds rolling And a voice was sounding As the fog was lifting Saying this land was made for you and me This land is your land This land is my land From California To the New York island From the Redwood Forest To the Gulf Stream waters This land was made for you and me

Nobody owns anything, land, stuff, or anything else. Our 'ownership' is as tenuous as the minute time our spirits occupy this fleshy being. We are simply holders, stewards, caretakers of these things.

Well bruce is so good with every song even with songs that is not his he makes it feels like its relatable for everyone and telling a story trough is music is his passion and i admire him for who he is and his love for making music and altough i never went to a concert of him every time i see a clip when he is performing it feels like i am there Bruce thank you for for your beautiful music❤️
I live in Spain. And everytime I listen to this song makes me cry. I wanna live there: From California, To the New York island, From the Redwood Forest ,To the Gulf Stream waters
I am not from the United States but I moved here, and I can tell you this is a beautiful place to live. There are good and bad people, but it certainly is a beautiful place to live. The great canyon, the countryside in Arkansas, Boston, New York, the springs in Florida, etc... Spain is beautiful too, profoundly beautiful, and I will travel to Spain
Nothing compares to Spain: the food, the weather, the prices, the health system, Formentera Island is like Caribbean!! And football biggest teams, art, wines, mountains to ski....and so on!!! I love Spain
This song is about the Great Depression ya'll it was written in protest to Irving Berlin's optimistic and patriotic view of America that he wrote about in "God Bless America." Guthrie wrote this because he was mad about what was happening in the country, people were losing everything, especially their jobs and money
Bruce Springsteen did say that this song was written by Woody Guthrie, it is right in the beginning of this video. I also have this song from his 75-85 collection and it is the same version and he does mention that Guthrie wrote it. Springsteen says Guthrie wrote it as an answer to Irving Berlin's God Bless America and "This Land is Your Land" is one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
I heard this on a "bootleg" record of Woody's in 1968 with this verse, "As I went walkin' that ribbon of highway I saw a sign sayin' 'PRIVATE PROPERTY' But on the other side it didn't say nu-u-thin This land was made for you and me."
Ok since its been awhile since someone left a message about how damn good springsteen's version is of this song, let me make sure to leave one. Great version Bruce, remember first time i heard in on live album 75-85 was like damn...
We need songs and conviction like this more than ever. Teach the young people who are protesting the Trump election. There is hope is darkness. Stay focused. Stay strong.
I was listening to this, as I love the song and I love Springsteen, and RU-vid threw it up as the next video after I watched one a friend had sent me. Then I scrolled down and I realized I was at the show where it was recorded. Lately it occurs to me, what a long, strange trip its been.
On this day in 1940 {February 23rd} Woody Guthrie, while in his room at the Hanover House Hotel in New York City, wrote the lyrics to "This Land This Your Land"... In 1962 two covered versions of the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, and both debut on the chart on the same day {November 25th}, the New Christy Minstrels' version at #93 and Ketty Lester at #97, and both versions also remained on the chart for one week... The song is a favorite of Bruce Springsteen; between 1980 and 2013 he has performed the song in 107 different concerts...
+Shannon Ames This song gets hates, because this land was stolen from our ancestors from along time ago. Meaning the American Indians. Which land, was stolen. So do not hate when someone hate. This is why
The song is great, but modern people tend to forget that the country was inhabited already when the European colonialists arrived ... Anyway - nobody, anywhere, should claim ownership to land, only to the right to cultivate it for the common good - the Earth needs to be loved and protected as humans and all other living creatures depend on it for what we need to survive ...

The jobs went to China. The capitalist class has no country and is only loyal to its own pocket. We working people on the other hand, love our land and it is time we took it back.

Ik all of us from both sides of the aisle can really hate this country sometimes but can we appreciate the beauty of America that our founding fathers created if just for a moment we need that now more than ever
Who’s still listening in 2020, cuz god bless we need this to be played everywhere to remind people how great this country is. God bless everyone and god bless America in these hard times.
no. because this protest song was written in direct response to the song God bless America. this song is about how there is still work to be done and we have yet reached our ideals. This song is about striving towards greatness not declaring we are. I know that there are a lot of people who don't believe this song is true (because of their race, class, gender identity, sexuality, religion, immigration status) and it never was but we can work towards it being more true for more people. I think that this protest song is about a promise that America is failing to keep. but I could be wrong.
