The two opus-numbered quartets of Max Bruch were first recorded only in 1993 by an Italian ensemble, and the recognised expertise of the Diogenes Quartet in music of this style and era makes their new recording the obvious first choice, but their album is further enhanced by the inclusion of a C minor quartet which was rediscovered as recently as 2013, in a box in the archives of the Mozart-Stiftung in Frankfurt. Further research revealed that this was an unpublished work by Bruch, composed in 1852 at the age of 14, in application for a scholarship from the foundation. Louis Spohr, in approving the application, was fulsome in his praise: ‘I am very interested to learn more about him, as I prophesy a brilliant career for him.’
This youthful effort is clearly influenced by the estimable models of Beethoven and Schubert, but its composer’s melodic gift is already revealed by the slow movement, an enchanting Notturno of great expressive strength. This is a subtle, finely balanced movement, woven with precocious sophistication by the teenage Bruch into an intricate fabric of voices, which cushions the sensitive melody, as it were, on a bed of roses. Four years later - and still only 18 - he referred back to elements of the quartet in his first acknowledged work in the genre, designated Op.9
This CD contains a World Premiere! The C minor Quartet by Max Bruch.
In 2013 an unknown quartet was discovered in the archives of the Mozart-Stiftung in Frankfurt, further research made it clear it was by the 14-year old Max Bruch! This fresh and spontaneous youth work clearly has its roots in the romantic tradition going back to Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Schumann.
The well known String Quartets Op.9 and Op.10 are vintage Bruch: although not revolutionary in any sense, they abound in catchy romantic melodies, the warm sonorities and harmonies adding to the feel-good atmosphere.
Excellent performances by the German Diogenes Quartet, who already recorded successfully for Brilliant Classics works by Gernsheim and a complete Schubert cycle.
Scholarly liner notes in both English and German are included in the booklet.

What a wonderful discovery! I'm like most people in that I'm only familiar with Bruch's violin concerto and Scottish Fantasy, so to find and hear these quartets was eye-opening. Hearing them made me want to explore more of Bruch's work. Thank you so much, you Brilliant Classic, you!

Fabulous performances of all of it. The quartet gels perfectly to produce the sound I'm sure Mr Bruch would have loved. Great recording. Great upload.

It simply is not possible to have enough recordings of the music of Max Bruch. My profound gratitude to brilliant classics not only for all the world premiere and repertoire expanding recordings and compilations of composers but also box set rare recordings of the greatest soloists like Kogan Gilels and Kissin to name only a few.

To think that these notes and masterpieces derived from silence is amazing. Thoughts are silent, It's the interpretation of them that creates noise. In this case this composer has found a way of making notes from a bundle of interpretations of what is noise in an unorganized manner. Genius.

Thank you for this great upload! Before this video of 2017 it wasn't possible to find not even Bruch's string quartets op. 9 and 10 on RU-vid, so thank you very much for these Romantic pearls! For those who didn't know much Bruch before stumbling upon this video, I recommend listening to his other operas (symphonies as well) to be overwhelmed by its Romantic spirit!

Bruch is one of those authors known for ONE single piece, and all the rest is unfortunately forgotten. The first violin concerto is his fortune and his malediction probably. It will always be "Bruch, the one of the violin concerto". If you are lucky you can stumble upon the Scottish fantasy played by Perlman in the same CD, otherwise Bruch's concerto is always with another author's violin concerto, not with another Bruch's opera.

Ever since age 12 I learned to play the guitar, classical pieces such as minuets, sarabandes, mazurkas. Then the piano, also classical. There is nothing like classical music, beginning with the great master Bach. First time I listen to Bruch, I love it because it has the "imperfections" that in Mozart's time were so disliked. I apologize to lovers of Mozart, but when I hear his scales and I know where they are going from note two, it's a turn off for me. Here with Bruch the tonality begins to be weakened, with which classical music became richer and more universal.
6 лет назад
i like the weakening in classical music to accomplish the universalization by the way of simplification and sensitivity. The great intensitiy grows up far from the conventional saloons.
6 лет назад
the minority is the better way for the universality.

Problem is that people misunderstand the String Quartet. Listen to Beethoven's String Quartets and you will find the music so intense that it does become more difficult to listen to. Those expecting to hear a Max Bruch similar to his pop classic (Violin Concerto No 1) get a shock, so they give a thumbs down. These are also early works but all the same rich in development and beautifully played here. Hope this helps. David

I don't understand why people make such a fuss about dislikes. It is possible that a person doesn't enjoy this music and indicates a dislike, presumably so that RU-vid does not 'recommend' similar music to them in the future. Is that such a dreadful thing? Similarly, does it really matter what number of people like or dislike the quartets. If I hacked into this website and changed the number of likes to something much larger, and reduced the number of dislikes to zero, would that make you much happier, and further, why would it make any difference to you?
