This brings back so many memories from watching these games on TV. Mario, Barrasso, Jagr, Stevens, Mullen, Badger Bob Johnson....I didn't think I'd ever see the Pens win the Cup yet I have been blessed to have seen it 5 times now; I think even if I get Alzheimers I will never forget this 1991 season!!!
i was a young bruins fan who loved neely and bourque. woulda been cool to see this penguin team play the gretzky oilers.... even the messier led oilers. you guys beat Chicago and who else for the 2 titles w/ Lemiuex? I loved coming home after hockey practice or whatever as a kid and seeing the Bruins play Pittsburgh (even though you guys usually won 7-5 or 6--5). the Bruins never had the depth at forward the Oilers and Penguins had at this time. Jacobs and Sinden were very cheap. i hope they make the goalie pads a lot smaller so fans can clearly see how great Crosby, Malkin, Marchand, Bergeron, Mcavoy and others around the league are. the NHL during the late 90s early 00s had a talent / young star problem. now the game is filled with elite talent that would flourish with goalie pads more appropriate. anyways... sounds like this game would've been great... maybe pens Bs will see each other in the conf finals.
Joe Heid I was there as well. Loudest game I ever been to. I remember having those free shark Flyers they gave away. When they were on the power play they played the Jaws theme and the entire crowd waved them in the air. Great game!
I remember this series it was like a passing of the torche .boston won the 1st 2 games rather handily .it was looking like a boston sweep and game 3 pittsburgh came out like they were shot out of a cannon and never look back
@@philcole910 Wasn't just great because of the drama, but the level of play between the 2 teams was very high. Even if you weren't a fan of either team you had to marvel at the level of hockey being played that night.
Few players would have the confidence to shoot at the empty net from where Mario did in that situation. An icing call there would have been a disaster but he could make that shot in his sleep even with a defender on him. Phil Bourque had a hell of a game too.
The Oilers would have crushed them. Penguins had some good players but they also had a lot of luck in their 2 Cups from the 90s. The 80s Oilers just crushed everyone. They basically had an all-star at every position.
Would've loved to have seen Lemieux and Co. play wide open hockey night after night like they played in the West during the Gretzky years. Just imagine what Lemieux did in All-Star games every night! He would've scored 240 points every year. As it is, he was on pace for over 220 in 89-90 before his back injury and on pace for 240 in 92-93 aside from back/cancer issues EVEN IN THE PATRICK DIVISION! Unbelievable. Only the 89' Flyers and 96' Panthers ever knocked a Pens team out with a healthy Mario and the Panthers only won because of horrendous officiating.
Great, it's nice to see since I wasn't a fan during that time. Great to see them proud to win the trophy, contrary to today, where they don't touch it.
So awesome to see Sid grab it this year after not touching it last season... I find it funny how Mario has a playoff beard now, when he never used to grow one--- I remember this game as the 1st championship that one of "my teams" won-- and the pens were a nice counter to the pirates 1990 collapse... hopefully Sid and the Pens continue to emulate Mario's actions from spring 1991-- bring on Detroit!
Lemieux actually broke precedent by carrying the Prince of Wales Trophy. He was the first to carry it for a LONG time and I don't think anyone has since.
This isn't anywhere near correct...the idea of not touching the conference trophy for luck didn't even exist until 1997 😂 www.ontheforecheck.com/2017/5/21/15671384/to-touch-or-not-to-touch-a-statistical-analysis-of-hockeys-conference-trophy-superstition
okay I dont get this if they touched it back then, why dont they touch it today, I mean the Pens touched it back in 1991 and won the cup so why dont they touch it today?
Not a Bruins fan, but the injury to Neely pretty much sunk their ship. For the Bruins to win the Cup, Janney, Neely, and Bourque were going to have carry their offense. Any injury to one of those three was going to screw them royally. I watched this series, was 13 at the time, and there was a clear dropoff after they lost Neely. The Penguins had so many great forwards throughout that lineup, they had Boston outnumbered in the end. Bruins were a better defensive team and had better goaltending. Samuelsson was our defensive coach for the past couple of seasons (Rangers), and this is the first thing that always pops into my mind whenever I think of him.
