I may be wrong but I believe Brunelleschi had been building a foundling hospital at the time of the commission for the dome using the classical style. Not as impressive as the dome, but it employed classical proportions and design and went on to further influence the renaissance. Brunelleschi also worked on a chapel with similar a classical approach. The dome was an impossible feat, but his contribution to classical design in the renaissance was also immense.
I'm so glad to see this documentary once more, and with such good quality video! It's a fascinating study of what a person - even one with no prior experience - can imagine and make possible. Thank you so much for posting this - I'm delighted to have the opportunity to experience it again. :)
I never grow tire of watching this documentary. I can watch it over and over again without getting bored. It's very educational as well as very interesting to tell the story how Brunelleschi able to build this enormous dome without any support. It makes me wonder if someone should actually build a dome using Brunelleschi's methods to show it really can be done. :)
MASTER BUILDER- HE NEVER WROTE ANYTHING ABOUT THE DOME ...AND THAT LEFT EVERYONE BAFFLED... AHEAD OF HIS TIME !!! ASTRID THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT VIDEO...BLESSINGS MY QUEEN...
Professor Ricci has the best experimental architectural method while the Spino- Peche is one the fact of the layers being offset into a spiral is Second the third is that each of the bricks are tapered so that the outer edge of the flat bricks are wider than the inner. This trapezoidal shape act in a fashion like keystones and being flat between the vertical brick, they lock each layer of brick firmly. So the plane of slip us counteracted as it is
While the domes were being constructed, the finish fenestration of stone work and tile would have installed simultaneous in the process of the dome creation. Such a method would permit the protection of the dome structure while the daily / weekly construction could proceeded directly have the required drying time for the mortar.
Stunning and exciting genius. Now we can understand better the powerful series 'Medici' on Netflix, and how perfectly they portrayed Brunelleschi and the effect the dome had on everyone at the time; a major driving force of the Renaissance.
