So glad you got to this song.. just saw them live in Vegas and they sounded exactly like the record!! Nowadays that’s a huge compliment because a lot of people aren’t singing live anymore but they killed this song. Lastly, BabyFace helped produce this record ✊🏾

It's overall their talent. Andy & Bruno have said Bruno has some weird ability to catch things in audio, things no one else notices or hears. Perfectionism? Also it IS partially the lyrics that modernize it, at least throughout the album, not particularly this song. And something I notice is ppl love to say they are basically cover artists and if they want to hear funk, soul, disco then they'll just listen to the originals. But with Silk Sonic, the 80s and 90s had to happen for their sound; this album is funk and soul, but includes sounds from the following decades in music. Like how Andy does melodic rapping on Fly As Me and 777. I feel Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis vibes here in this song, a la "Janet" (which released the year I was born lol) and New Edition. ALSO Babyface came in the studio for this record in particular. Ppl say they were born in the wrong era...nah.

Their ingredient is detail to excellence. No beat-up on your comment bruh! Russell Tompkins of Stylistics is my fav high tenor/falsetto of them all, for his richness of tone, even more than Phillip Bailey, Eddie Kendricks, Blue Magic, Bloodstone, whoever. But in terms of vocal execution, instrumental & sound production detail? These cats bringin it on another level. PLUS they know who to bring in to enhance. Bruno called Babyface into the studio on this joint. Soon as he hears it, told Bruno, you got to put a modulation (key change) right there, which is the point you heard it. Then he joined them to sing background on the track. There’s also a deeper swag to their whole project, like some serious flexin in a way that just wasn’t done back in the ‘60’s & ‘70’s. An example is the 2nd verse, Andy singin, ‘If I could turn back the hands on my ‘rolley’…😂. So instead of just turn back the hands of time, on a regular old watch or clock, they got to let us know like, ‘Yo, we good in the paper dept. Ain’t nobody hurting for cash over here, we ballin, but damn girl!’ Same with leavin mansion doors open, & spending 35, 45,000 ($$$) up in Tiffany’s. Wasn’t nobody flexin that kinda swag on the material financial tip back in ‘70’s, even if they were actually livin it. The artists knew that so many folk, their fan base, was ‘scratching & survivin’, as were many of the artists. Very few were million or multimillionaires. In there own way, they kept it more real just bein about love, romance, relationship or social issues of the times. Instrumentally, with the bells, guitar (sometimes sitar), drums & percussion effects, the track style is more reminiscent of Stylistics & Spinners, than Temptations, but overall Silk Sonic flourishes in attention to detail. I completely agree. It's an old sound with a modern twist. I think it's the ability to use the new mixing and mastering that wasn't available back in the day. Now I'm a child of the 60's late 70's. I was 12 ,13, years old when the Temptations was at their Max, I'm talking about the real Temptations, Eddie, David, Paul, Melvin, and Otis. I saw them Live at the Forum in1969. My college days consisted of the Stylistic, Chi lights, Delfonics, Whisper etc. Although all of those groups could sing and had their style I'm not sure that any of them had the voice and range that Bruno brings.

One thing that automatically makes it fit in todays music, and yet still be vintage, is simply its Bruno Mars voice. For years, Bruno’s distinct voice was the sound of pop music and its very familiar to us listening to music today. So, to hear Bruno’s modern sounding voice singing vintage style music is a perfect blend. Anderson has a modern sounding voice too and is very talented, but Anderson was not nearly as well known the last ten years like Bruno was.

Let’s keep it real. It’s the talent.

Anderson is "crazy" on the drums on this song...I love this song its beautiful and yes their sound is vintage we love them because their music has crossed all age demographic am 57 and I can't get enough of this groups music

Bruno and Anderson are both students of music and music history. And it shows. They had a 4 episode stint on Apple Music. The amount of knowledge of different genres between the 2 of them is impressive. Its not surprising that they could take the vintage sound and update it.
